Book The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong of Northampton Mass Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong of Northampton Mass Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Woodbridge Dwight and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 862 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Descendants of Elder John Strong, of Northampton, Mass, Vol. 1 In preparing the history of the Dwight family for publication, the author obtained, in tracing out their frequent intermarriages with the Strongs, so much of the genealogy of this large and honorable family, that, after much reflection on the necessary demands of so great an enterprise, he determined at last to undertake also the preparation of their family his tory. And this he now offers first of the two to those interested in its details, designing to follow its publication soon with that of his paternal ancestry and kindred. N 0 one could know better than he, after five years of diligent industry in his previous endeavor, what would be the cost, in time, patience, strength and money, of his new effort. In his history of the former family there were even in the third generation but three founders of families; but with the Strongs how different! Elder John Strong began the family history with 18 children, 15 of whom had families, and 88 of their children are on record in this book as heads of families. There were doubtless a dozen more. From the third genera tion downwards, the author's task was nearly 30 times greater, therefore, in tracing his maternal ancestry and kindred, than his paternal. When first seriously meditating the vast attempt, he felt, like one standing on the banks of a wide, strong stream lying between him and victory, just enough excited with fear at the dimensions of the prospect before him, to be all the more resolved and eager to push into the sea of difficulties, that spread everywhere in view. Then are their names again decried, because they stopped where they did. The most distinguished of living British essayists has said with a just severity; It is too much that the benefactors of mankind, after having been reviled by the dances of their own gener ation for going too far, are to be reviled by the dance. This book was released on 2019-02-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descendants of Philip McIntire, a Scottish Highlander Who Was Deported by Oliver Cromwell Following the Battle of Dunbar, September 3, 1650, and Settled at Reading, Mass., About 1660 Since it is his intention to continue his researches in order to obtain a more nearly complete record of the family and in time to print an appendix containing such additions, the compiler is anxious to enlist the cooperation of all descendants, especially of those whose family records are now incomplete. While every effort has been made to simplify the arrangement of the genealogical facts which are presented in this volume, a word of explanation may be helpful. The marginal numbers which precede the names of some of the children indicate that more extended accounts of these descendants appear later in the records. The small exponents are generation numbers. The abbreviations which are used in this volume are generally em ployed by most genealogists and include: abt. - about; d. Died without issue; int. - intention of marriage; q.v. - which see; res - resided; and s.b. - stillborn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book History of the Covenanters in Scotland Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Covenanters in Scotland, Vol. 1 of 2 IN Offering to the Public the following History of the Covenanters, the Author disclaims any wish to supersede the study of those more copious volumes which have furnished the materials of his own. On the contrary, he is persuaded, that in order to ob tain an enlarged acquaintance with this or with any branch of history, a patient examination of those elaborate works which were designed to illus trate it is indispensably necessary. And such an exercise, in the case of every one who can com mand sufficient leisure, and whose mind has been kindled by the interest of the subject, will be found much more attractive than it is too often supposed to be irksome and laborious. In former times, those venerable volumes which contain the records of the ecclesiastical history of Scotland constituted the staple reading of the most respectable classes of the people, whose minds, by this means, be came not only stored with the memorable events of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but imbued also with those lofty principles which these events tended at once to form and to develope. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bernards of Abington and Nether Winchendon a Family History, Vol. 2 of 2 The moderate and courteous tone hitherto observable in the Assembly's answers to the Governor, which breathe a Spirit of loyalty to the Crown and of regard for its representative in Massachusetts, renders the subsequent outbursts diflicult to understand. But they were undoubtedly the result of secret influence, and of inflammatory newspaper articles prompted by that influence. Few persons, even in Boston, appear to have anticipated the full extent of the evil, except the agitators and some of the followers whom they had instructed, although it was, no doubt, a time of great anxiety to the loyalists.
