Download or read book 150 Years of Eastern Oregon History written by Joseph H. Labadie and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a real story about an ordinary family from Albia, Iowa, who in 1862 crossed the Oregon Trail and settled in the lower Powder River Valley in what today is Baker City, Oregon. Within two years, family members were part of a thriving dry-goods and mercantile business in the gold-mining town of Mormon Basin, selling rubber boots, shovels, and liquor to both American and Chinese miners. By the late 1860s, the easy gold had been panned and sluiced out so the miners moved on to chase bigger dreams in newer places. So too did some of the family members; they sold their business interests and with a saddlebag full of gold rode north to Umatilla County, Oregon, where in 1871 they started a ranch and cattle business. Portions of James Shumway’s Couse Creek Ranch near Milton-Freewater are still owned by descendants; it is an Oregon State Centennial Ranch. This book uses old photographs, letters, documents, business journals, personal diaries, and contemporary research to recount 150 years of Barton–Shumway family history in eastern Oregon. It is a story told through the lives of some of the real people who survived it.

Download or read book Writings of Charles S Peirce Volume 8 1890 1892 written by Charles S. Peirce and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-07 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 8 of this landmark edition follows Peirce from May 1890 through July 1892—a period of turmoil as his career unraveled at the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. The loss of his principal source of income meant the beginning of permanent penury and a lifelong struggle to find gainful employment. His key achievement during these years is his celebrated Monist metaphysical project, which consists of five classic articles on evolutionary cosmology. Also included are reviews and essays from The Nation in which Peirce critiques Paul Carus, William James, Auguste Comte, Cesare Lombroso, and Karl Pearson, and takes part in a famous dispute between Francis E. Abbot and Josiah Royce. Peirce's short philosophical essays, studies in non-Euclidean geometry and number theory, and his only known experiment in prose fiction complete his production during these years. Peirce's 1883-1909 contributions to the Century Dictionary form the content of volume 7 which is forthcoming.

Download or read book To Keep the Waters Troubled written by Linda O. McMurry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-12-14 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the generation that followed Frederick Douglass, no African American was more prominent, or more outspoken, than Ida B. Wells. Seriously considered as a rival to W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington for race leadership, Wells' career began amidst controversy when she sued a Tennessee railroad company for ousting her from a first class car, a legal battle which launched her lifelong commitment to journalism and activism. In the 1890s, Wells focused her eloquence on the horrors of lynching, exposing it as a widespread form of racial terrorism. Backing strong words with strong actions, she lectured in the States and abroad, arranged legal representation for black prisoners, hired investigators, founded anti-lynching leagues, sought recourse from Congress, and more. Wells was an equally forceful advocate for women's rights, but parted ways with feminist allies who would subordinate racial justice to their cause. Using diary entries, letters, and published writings, McMurry illuminates Wells's fiery personality, and the uncompromising approach that sometimes lost her friendships even as it won great victories. To Keep the Waters Troubled is an unforgettable account of a remarkable woman and the and the times she helped to change.
