Volume 2 (Last & Smol, 2001b) focused on physical and chemical methods. Volume 3 (Smol et al. , 2001), along with this book, summarize the many biological methods and techniques that are available to study long-term environmental changeusing information preserved in sedimentary profiles. A subsequent volume (Birks et al. , in preparation) will deal with statistical and data handling procedures. It is our intent that these books will provide sufficient detail and breadth to be useful handbooks for both seasoned practitioners as well as newcomers to the area of paleolimnology. These books will also hopefully be useful to non-paleolimnologists (e. g. , limnologists, archeologists, palynologists, geographers, geologists, etc. ) who continue to hear and read about pal- limnology, but have little chance to explore the vast and sometimes difficult to access journal-based reference material for this rapidly expanding field. After registration at the University of 10ensuu and the opening session and welcome reception in the Town Hall, the participants moved to a hotel at Koli, a hill famed as a landmark and for its panoramic view. Here the lecture session, lasting four days, took place. Momentarily, the mosaic of the lakeland became visible between the clouds showing the hill slopes covered by mature spruce forest and scattered old birch trees, a reminder of the last slash-and-burn phase some 130 years ago. Altogether 120 paleolimnologists participated in the meetings and most also attended one of the two post-symposium excursions to the Arctic Circle and to South Finland. The lectures covered a wide range of paleolimnological subjects. The main topics, however, included current aspects in the dating of sediments and the history of eutrophication. The symposium was advised by the international organizing committee under the presidency of Professor Edward S. Deevey. Other members present at Koli were Dr. Maj-Britt Florin, Dr. Heikki Ignatius, Prof. Heinz Lamer, Prof. Gerbert Martinson and Dr. Magdalena Ralska-lasiewiczowa. They also gave direction to a discussion on future plans for international activity in paleolimnology. Later in the autumn, after the end of the symposium, the partici pants sent special thanks to the secretaries, Mrs. Eija Merilainen, Mrs. Tuula Nylander and Mrs. Anita Toukomaa, for solving individual problems during the symposium with smooth and rapid efficiency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lough Neagh is the largest lake in the British Isles. It covers an area of 383 km2 being 30 km along its longest axis. From pre-historic times the lake and its rivers influenced the settlements of man in the role of a fishery and communication link with the interior of Ireland. Ireland's first canal, completed in 1787, linked the small but significant coal deposits of Tyrone to Dublin by way of the lough and later the Lagen Canal became an important commercial route to the new city of Belfast. Today, only sand barge transport persists but the lough supports Europe's largest eel fishery and provides commercial salmon, trout and perch catches, besides acting as an important centre for recreational pursuits. Increasingly it has become the major water resource for Northern Ireland supplying much of the demand for the heavily populated Belfast area. Biologically the lough is rich, sustaining enormous invertebrate populations of, for example, chironomids and gammarids alongside the comparatively exotic glacial relict, Mysis relicta. Its bird life makes the lough an area of very special conservation interest as a Ramsar site. The book describes the basic ecology of the lough with particular emphasis on both the interaction of the physical, chemical and biological components and the role of ecology in resource management. Extensive recent researches are set in geological, geographical and historical context and together with palaeolimnological studies of the sediments are used to trace major changes in the ecology of the lough under man's influence, especially in the past 100 years.
