Book History of the Archdiocese of St Louis Vol 1

Download or read book History of the Archdiocese of St Louis Vol 1 written by John Rothensteiner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 940 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Vol. 1: In Its Various Stages of Development From A. D. 1673 to A. D. 1928; Containing Parts One and Two For the earlier part of our history we found great help in the various volumes of the se-called Jesuit Relations, and of the Virginia and-british Series of the Illinois Historical Collections. The annual publications of the Leopoldine Association of the Austrian Empire, and the Annales (10 la propagation de la Pot of Lyons, have also been put under contribution, and have yielded generous spoils, whilst pri vate individuals and religious communities were equally generous, if not equally rich in their offerings. From many sources, therefore, came together the almost innumerable data that were to form the body of this History of the Diocese of St. Louis. For a history of the Diocese of St. Louis in its fullest extent, was in contemplation from the start. The five volumes of the St. Louis Catholic Historical Review, the numerous articles published by members of the Committee on Publication in the Catholic Historical Review, of Washington D. C., the Illinois Catholic Historical Review, of Chicago and in the Watchman and Church Progress of St. Louis, as well as in the German pastoral-blatt, and the central-blatt and Social Justice, also of St. Louis, were but preparatory steps towards the much-desired achievement. Download or read book History of the Archdiocese of St Louis Vol 2 written by John Rothensteiner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, Vol. 2: In Its Various Stages of Development From A. D. 1673 to A. D. 1928; Containing Part Three Only the latter two were completed by 1859, the others were delayed for six years. These railroads Opened vast stretches of rich and beauti ful country to imnngration which was then in full swing, and at the same time kept them from isolation. They also made it possible for one minister of God to serve several farflung Congregations on the same Sunday, and to visit the sick and dying far more readily. Of all the contributary causes of the unprecedented progress of the Church in Missouri during the last eighty years, the enjoyment of perfect liberty by the Church, the mighty and constant flow of immigration, and the services of the Railroad are the most notable. It has been well said bv a writer in Blackwood, that for the fullest measure of civilization free dom and enjoyment of which earth is capable, the one thing needful is the fullest intercourse of nation with nation, of man with man. It cannot, therefore, be doubted that the whole system of railways, must be acknowledged as having given the mightiest propulsion to the general improvement of mankind. It may be that the more modern inven tions of the automobile and aeroplane will in a measure supersede the railways: but the honor of having been the first really rapid transporta tion system in the world in general and in Missouri in particular must remain with the railways. Book excerpt: Joseph Ritter was one of the most important and forward-thinking prelates of the Church in North America during the 20th century. He served as ordinary for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and then as "Cardinal" Ritter in St. Louis for twenty years until his death in 1967. Through his efforts, the entire archdiocesan school system was desegregated, and he was the first bishop to send priests to Latin America as missionaries. This biography provides us with the first serious account of his life and accomplishments. It is written by a priest who knew him firsthand and ministered under his guidance.
