Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1822 edition. Excerpt: ... chap. vii. Churches and Chapels. There were formerly fourteen parish churches in Stamford, exclusive of St. Martin's, which will be hereafter noticed, besides the chapels of St. Bennet, and St. Mary in the Gannoc-street, with other chapels of which there does not now appear to be any information on record. The churches were St. Clement's, St. Mary's Benniwerk, St. Peter's, St. Andrew's, Trinity, St. Paul's, St. Stephen's, St. Thomas's, St. Michael's Cornstall, Great St. Michael's, St. Mary's, St. George's, All Saints', and St. John the Baptist's. Of these the latter five only are now standing, the remainder being in part burnt down by the northern soldiers iri 1461, who, says Camden, destroyed all the towns they came to from Stamford to St. Alban's; and Peck adds, that, meeting with some obstruction at Stamford, they levelled every building without distinction without the walls, among which were the churches. They were again reduced in 1538, dt the dissolution of the monasteries; and, lastly, in 1553, by virtue of an act of parliament made in 1547, which empowered the chief magistrate and two justices of the peace to lessen their number. At this time five only were suffered to remain, according to the old division of the town into five wards, allowing one to each ward. It has been a matter of surprise to some, that, if the whole fourteen churches were formerly enabled to maintain their ministers, how it is that the major part of those now standing can scarcely afford a competency for such purpose. The reason, however, probably may be, that the monks of the several monasteries were accustomed to officiate in the churches belonging to the parish in which they resided, and when the former were dissolved, most of those parishes that had a...

Book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 28 1880

This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is part of the definitive edition of letters written by and to Charles Darwin, the most celebrated naturalist of the nineteenth century. Notes and appendixes put these fascinating and wide-ranging letters in context, making the letters accessible to both scholars and general readers. Darwin depended on correspondence to collect data from all over the world, and to discuss his emerging ideas with scientific colleagues, many of whom he never met in person. The letters are published chronologically. In 1880, Darwin published On The Power of Movement in Plants, and began writing his final book, The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms. He was engaged in controversy with Samuel Butler, following publication of his last book, Erasmus Darwin. At the end of the year, he succeeded in raising support for a Civil List pension for Alfred Russel Wallace, co-discoverer of the theory of natural selection.
