Book Historical Sketch of St Joseph s Provincial Seminary Troy N Y Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Sketch of St Joseph s Provincial Seminary Troy N Y Classic Reprint written by Henry Gabriels and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of St. Joseph's Provincial Seminary, Troy, N. Y The United States Catholic Historical Society can not send forth this volume without returning thanks to the Rt. Rev. Bishop of Ogdensburg. No one was better fitted to chronicle the story of St. Joseph's Seminary than Bishop Gabriels, who was present at its Opening and guided its fortunes for the greater part of its existence. In his possession were most of the official documents bearing on the history of the Seminary which are known to exist, and he is personally acquainted with all the sources of infor mation. Naturally, the former president of the Semi nary has used the language of modesty and sobriety, rather than that of enthusiasm, in presenting his story to our readers. From a historical point of view this adds value to the work. We feel convinced that the Bishop's historical sketch will always remain the chief source of information of the history of St. Joseph's Seminary. Book excerpt: In Founding Father, Michael F. Lombardo provides the first critical biography of John J. Wynne, S.J. (1859-1948). One of the most prominent American Catholic intellectuals of the early twentieth century, Wynne was founding editor of the Catholic Encyclopedia (1907) and the Jesuit periodical America (1909), and served as vice-postulator for the canonization causes of the first American saints (the Jesuit Martyrs of North America) and Kateri Tekakwitha. Lombardo uses theological inculturation to explore the ways in which Wynne used his publications to negotiate American Catholic citizenship during the Progressive Era. He concludes that Wynne’s legacy was part of a flowering of early-twentieth century American Catholic intellectual thought that made him a key forerunner to the mid-century Catholic Revival.
