Book Chiropractic in America

Download or read book Chiropractic in America written by J. Stuart Moore and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the century since founder D.D. Palmer made his "First Adjustment" in 1895, chiropractic has grown to become the second largest healing group in America (after medical doctors) and the most widespread drugless therapy in the world. Now, in Chiropractic in America, J. Stuart Moore has written the first book to place this unorthodox medical movement in its proper historical setting, examining its relation to other sects, to religious beliefs, and to orthodox medicine. Moore offers new interpretations of chiropractic's central schisms - disagreements between so-called "straights" and "mixers", as well as conflicts between D.D. Palmer and his son B.J. - and of the effects of nineteenth-century professionalization on the fledgling movement. Drawing on previously unpublished archival material, he also examines colorful claims by inventors of such devices as the "Polysine Generator" and the "Semiautomatic White Light Instrument".

Book The Religion of Chiropractic

Download or read book The Religion of Chiropractic written by Holly Folk and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chiropractic is by far the most common form of alternative medicine in the United States today, but its fascinating origins stretch back to the battles between science and religion in the nineteenth century. At the center of the story are chiropractic's colorful founders, D. D. Palmer and his son, B. J. Palmer, of Davenport, Iowa, where in 1897 they established the Palmer College of Chiropractic. Holly Folk shows how the Palmers' system depicted chiropractic as a conduit for both material and spiritualized versions of a "vital principle," reflecting popular contemporary therapies and nineteenth-century metaphysical beliefs, including the idea that the spine was home to occult forces. The creation of chiropractic, and other Progressive-era versions of alternative medicine, happened at a time when the relationship between science and religion took on an urgent, increasingly competitive tinge. Many remarkable people, including the Palmers, undertook highly personal reinterpretations of their physical and spiritual worlds. In this context, Folk reframes alternative medicine and spirituality as a type of populist intellectual culture in which ideologies about the body comprise a highly appealing form of cultural resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for use in the class room. It may, however, be studied just as easily by the field practitioner, and is not too technical in most of its parts to be readily grasped by the layman. It has grown, rather than having been written; it is the expansion of the notes which were tested in the class room for six years, and the writer believes that, with the constant arrangement and betterment to suit the requirements of the students of Chiropractic, this has created a real textbook, rendering easily understood a subject that students have always said was difficult.

This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 1246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive, extensively illustrated book focusing on chiropractic principles, diagnosis, and treatment. A Doody’s Core Title for 2019! 5 STAR DOODY'S REVIEW! "This is the third edition of one of the chiropractic profession's most important and influential books. It is a compendium of hard scientific knowledge about all aspects of chiropractic, from the social and historical to the clinical and research oriented. It is a significant expansion from the second edition, which was published in 1992, quite some time ago. It contains five major sections: Introduction to Principles of Chiropractic, Introduction to Chiropractic Theory, Introduction to the Clinical Examination, Introduction to Specific Treatment Methods, and Introduction to Management of Specific Disorders....The book exceeds all expectations the author had for it....I consider this the most essential of all chiropractic texts, one that all chiropractors should obtain."--Doody's Review Service Developed as the core textbook for the chiropractic student and as a professional reference, this text presents theory, philosophy, and practice principles of chiropractic. Covers both traditional and newer chiropractic techniques as well as the clinical exam and management of specific disorders.
