Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Sicily From the Earliest Times, Vol. 3 Was certainly unexpected, and which I fear may be inconvenient. But the Athenian invasion could not be cut short, and it seemed better to couple it and the Carthaginian invasion together. The two fill up the space between Sicily as I painted it in the last chapter of my second volume, Sicily free and independent but of no prominent account beyond its own' borders, and Sicily, as we shall see it in the next volume, free no longer, but the seat of the greatest power in the European world. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Sicily From the Earliest Times, Vol. 4 The notes have been a considerable labour. The places to be annotated were indeed marked in the ms, but in the great majority of cases not only had no attempt been made by the author to supply the notes themselves, but no indication was given of the references to be made. In compiling them I have endeavoured where possible to supplement the sources made use of in the text by the indi cation of fresh material or of more recent criticism. It has moreover from time to time been necessary to make use of the notes as a vehicle for conveying dissent from the views expressed in the text. It must be constantly borne in mind in this connexion that, though, on the whole, the work in its present form seems to be such as Mr. Freeman when he wrote it desired to-set before the public eye, there is no part that he might not have revised or modified had fresh evidence bearing on the points at issue come under his notice. He was himself accustomed to re-write large passages of his works: and his mind was always open to fresh lights. But, although in the notes I have ventured here and there to adduce evidence for a different view from that expressed in the text, I have, except in the case of obvious verbal slips, regarded the text itself as sacred. I have altered nothing, and I have taken away nothing. I have moreover been careful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book History of Sicily Vol 1 written by Edward A. Freeman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Sicily, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Times These two volumes are the beginning of a work which, if I did not think before I thought of the History of the Norman Conquest, I certainly thought of before the plan of that work had taken any definite shape. I believe my thoughts were first drawn towards Sicily, nearly fifty years back, by a Pindar lecture of the late Isaac Williams. That gave me, and I suppose others, some dim notion of one side of the story of the great Mediterranean island. The other side was suggested to me some years later by Gaily Knights Normans in Sicily. The two sides were put into their fitting relation to one another by a few memorable words of Grote (chap, xliii. vol. v.p. 277); "We are here introduced to the first known instance of that series of contests between the Phoenicians and Greeks of Sicily, which, like the struggles between the Saracens and the Normans in the eleventh and twelfth centuries after the Christian aera, were destined to determine whether the island should be a part of Africa or a part of Europe - and which were only terminated, after the lapse of three centuries, by the absorption of both into the vast bosom of Rome." Those words I wish to have looked on as the text of all that I have since thought and written on Sicilian history.
