Book excerpt: Saint Mary's College compiles nearly 200 engaging images from the extensive Saint Mary's College Archives to create the first exclusively visual history of the college's prestigious 150 years. The images in this work illustrate the story of one of the first Catholic women's colleges in Indiana from shortly after the Sisters of the Holy Cross arrived from Le Mans, France in 1843 to present day. Envisioned by these women of faith as a place to enrich the minds and spirits of the girls of the frontier, Saint Mary's began its tradition of pioneering education for women. This original mission enabled the college to adapt to the contemporary needs of its students and continue to grow and become a regional leader in science, education, and the arts. As the number of students increased, and the community and world around the campus changed, Saint Mary's College evolved by continuing to honor tradition. The pictures reflect the evolution of the student body, campus, and academic life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a critical biography of the greatest platform speaker in the United States during the Great Depression era. His name was Brother Leo Meehan of the Christian Brothers. His extension courses for the University of California drew standing-room-only crowds, and his poetry recitals filled the San Francisco Opera House. He shared the same lecture podium with Winston Churchill and Sherwood Anderson. In 1939, he substituted for Monsignor Fulton J. Sheen for a month on the Catholic Hour over the NBC radio network. As its chancellor, Brother Leo made Saint Marys College one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the West. His magisterial history of English literature was adopted by colleges and universities across the nation. Although a vowed religious, Brother Leo conducted a secret love affair with a wealthy Oakland heiress, who was also his cousin. His leaving the religious life in 1941 became a national news story. After retiring to a stone villa on Lake Sherwood in Southern California, he married one of his many female fans. Francis Meehan died in 1966.

The pictures and correspondence in this work come from personal scrapbooks compiled by alumnae while they were students and years after they graduated. They reveal the growth of tradition and memories in the lives of Saint Mary's students over the decades. During the mid-1930s many women left letters tucked between the stones of the Avenue's front gate each night for the gentleman across the road at Notre Dame. During their senior year in 2004, three best friends turned off the first-floor lights in Le Mans Hall and said goodnight to Sister Madeleva and Mother Angela on their way up to second floor library. These priceless memories capture moments in time that were enjoyed by only a few, but now can be treasured by all.

Book The Catholic Philanthropic Tradition in America

Download or read book The Catholic Philanthropic Tradition in America written by Mary J. Oates and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1995-05-22 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their earliest days in America, Catholics organized to initiate and support charitable activities. A rapidly growing church community, although marked by widening church and ethnic differences, developed the extensive network of orphanages, hospitals, schools, and social agencies that came to represent the Catholic way of giving. But changing economic, political, and social conditions have often provoked sharp debate within the church about the obligation to give, priorities in giving, appropriate organization of religious charity, and the locus of authority over philanthropic resources. This first history of Catholic philanthropy in the United States chronicles the rich tradition of the church's charitable activities and the increasing tension between centralized control of giving and democratic participation.
