Book excerpt: Titus Livius (59 BCE - 17 CE), known as Livy, was a Roman teacher, writer and historian, and friend of the Emperor Augustus. Livy was a teenager during the time of civil wars throughout the Roman world, was educated in philosophy and rhetoric, and moved to Rome sometime in the 30s BC. After working as a teacher of rhetoric, he decided to forego teaching and write a history of the city. Using only traditions, official temple annals (which weren't entirely reliable) and personal records of illustrious families, Livy attempted to compile the most complete history of Rome from its creation to the reign of Tiberius. Nearly eight centuries of history originally comprised 142 books, of which barely a quarter have survived. Nevertheless, this monumental work paints a colorful picture of the grandeur of Rome; it is as much a narration as it is a history, and provides a fascinating glimpse into the Roman Empire and its citizens. Contained in this edition is the last of four volumes, comprising the extant works of Livy.

They have become ubiquitous in the modern world, but emerged not much later than the invention of writing. Following Foucault, who first used the word archive in a metaphorical sense as "the general system of the formation and transformation of statements" in his "Archaeology of Knowledge" (1969), postmodern theorists have tried to exploit the potential of this concept and initiated the "archival turn". In recent years, however, archives have attracted the attention of anthropologists and historians of different denominations regarding them as historical objects and "grounding" them again in real institutions. The papers in this volume explore the complex topic of the archive in a historical, systematic and comparative context and view it in the broader context of manuscript cultures by addressing questions like how, by whom and for which purpose were archival records produced, and if they differ from literary manuscripts regarding materials, formats, and producers (scribes).

Expanding on the Linguistic Relativity Hypothesis (i.e., the idea that language affects the way we think), this volume proposes the “Script Relativity Hypothesis” (i.e., the idea that the script in which we read affects the way we think) by offering a unique perspective on the effect of script (alphabets, morphosyllabaries, or multi-scripts) on our attention, perception, and problem-solving. Once we become literate, fundamental changes occur in our brain circuitry to accommodate the new demand for resources. The powerful effects of literacy have been demonstrated by research on literate versus illiterate individuals, as well as cross-scriptal transfer, indicating that literate brain networks function differently, depending on the script being read. This book identifies the locus of differences between the Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans, and between the East and the West, as the neural underpinnings of literacy. To support the “Script Relativity Hypothesis”, it reviews a vast corpus of empirical studies, including anthropological accounts of human civilization, social psychology, cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, applied linguistics, second language studies, and cross-cultural communication. It also discusses the impact of reading from screens in the digital age, as well as the impact of bi-script or multi-script use, which is a growing trend around the globe.
