Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Religions In the course of this volume we shall study the roots and the higher growth of this tree, which through its age long development, as any tree changes its earth-drawn sustenance into something more ethereal, has transmuted terror into reverent awe, hunger into hope, lust into love. We shall trace the slow progress of such roots of religion as bear today the names taboo, fetishism, totemism; see how taboo invested with spiritual power the moral com mand, insured the home, and made for civilization; how fetishism confirmed the thought that man depends on a spiritual something, gave faith in a power that helped, and made that power the judge of right and wrong; how totemism linked man in communion with the divine and in conjunction with seasonal nature-worship founded ritual in the recurrent form necessary to religious stability. We shall see in short that the higher not only is above the lower but that it has ascended out of the lower. Savagery did not give place to civilization but developed into it, was already civilization in the germ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prolegomena of the History of Religions I do not doubt that all real students of the History of Religion have by this time read M. Beville's book in the original. But the interest in the Science of Religion is spreading rapidly and widely, and there are large classes of English readers who seldom see a book which is published abroad, and who are more easily reached by an English translation. I hope, therefore, that M. Beville's book in its English trans lation will be read even more widely in England than it has been and I trust that it may help to remedy the injury which has of late been done to the Science of Religion in this country, both by its indiscriminate enemies and by its indiscriminate admirers. Book History of Religions Vol 2

Download or read book History of Religions Vol 2 written by George Foot Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Religions, Vol. 2: Judaism, Christianity, Mohammedanism Each of them, conceiving itself as the one true religion, attributes to itself finality, and believes itself destined to universality. In them all the ideal of universality assumed political forms. In Judaism, indeed, the dream of ruling over the nations of the earth in the name of the Lord never had a chance to translate itself into historical reality or even into essay. But in Christianity and Islam the idea of empire as the embodiment of religion dominated centuries of history, and ruthless wars of conquest glorified themselves as the victories of the faith. A further consequence of the ideal of exclusive universality in Christendom was the prin ciple that a Christian state should not tolerate within it any other religion than Christianity, nor any other kind of Christianity than the one true kind. Religious liberty logi cally involves the secularisation of the state. In modern times the expansion of both Christianity and Islam has been by commerce, missions, and colonisation rather than by conquest, but commerce and missions have often been but steps to protection, occupation, and annexa tion by Christian states. The belief in ultimate universality must persist as long as each believes itself the one true reli gion, and so long as it persists the religions must strive in the ways of the time to achieve their universal destiny. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orpheus: A General History of Religions I am deeply conscious of the moral responsibility I assume in giving for the first time a picture of religions in general considered as natural phenomena and nothing more. I believe that the times are ripe for such an essay, and that in this, as in all other domains, secular reason must exercise its rights. I have tried not to wound any conscience; but I have said what I believe to be the truth with the emphasis proper to truth. I do not think that the persecution of the Bacchanals by the Roman Senate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comparative History of Religions, Vol. 2 Of such junctures five, at least, have entered so deeply into the life of mankind that general history cannot be recorded intelligibly without them. These are, first, the change whereby, out of the Simple patri archal religion, there was gradually constructed a legal system of religious Observances: secondly, that whereby the legal observances were, in some quarters, adopted and inspired by a monotheistic reformation; thirdly, that whereby in the extremity of legal bondage and degradation, a reaction of reason was created against it; fourthly, that whereby, in the hopelessness of ra tional unbelief, men threw themselves back into legal bondage, or sustained a rational faith by a philosophic system; and fifthly that which was effected by the introduction of Christianity. Download or read book A Comparative History of Religions Vol 1 written by James C. Moffat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comparative History of Religions, Vol. 1: Ancient Scriptures IN the work, of which this is the first part, it is proposed to exhibit a general view of all religions in their relations to one another. Without presuming to treat so vast a subject exhaustively, the writer believes that a simple statement and classification of the doctrines and practices of religion, and the facts of their historical development, as far as known, will help towards a scientific comprehension of the whole. At present, its materials are an utter chaos, in which superstition and unbelief alike find refuge, and the wildest assertions on both sides elude exposure. To compare and arrange what we know partly, enables us to know it better, and is some advance towards understanding what would otherwise remain unknown. Truth is always served by that work, however brief or feeble, which goes to clear up the order of facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Religion on the Basis of Its History The question of the origin of religion, and of the nature of primitive religion, was not, as a rule, seriously taken up by the early philosophy of religion, nor made the subject of any thorough investi gation; in recent times, however, it has come to the front, and has become one of the burning questions of religious science. And this is as it should be. For the nature of a mental phenomenon such as religion, is only unfolded in the totality of its development in history, and can only be understood as a whole when its origin has been traced, and its springs laid bare.
