His own researches at the Record Office have enabled Mr. Plomer to enlarge considerably our know ledge of the printers at work during the second half of the seventeenth century, but when the State made up its mind to leave the printers alone, even this source of information lapses, and the pioneer has to gather What he may from the imprints in books which come under his hand, from notices of a. Few individual printers, and stray anecdotes and memoranda. Through this almost pathless forest Mr. Plomer has threaded his way, and though the road he has made may be broken and imperfect, the fact that a road exists, which they can widen and mend, will be of incalculable advantage to all students of printing. Annexed is an engraving of a Copy of an Indian gazette, taken many years since by a French officer from the American original, with an explanation of the same. It relates to an expedition of a body of Cana dian warriors, who, soon after the settlement of this part of America, took up the hatchet in favor of the French against a hostile tribe that adhered to the English. It was communicated to me many years ago, and, soon after, I had it engraved for the Royal American Magazine. It had previously appeared in several works published in Europe. Book A Brief History of Printing in America

Download or read book A Brief History of Printing in America written by Frederick W. Hamilton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of Printing in America: Containing a Brief Sketch of the Development of the Newspaper and Some Notes on Publishers Who Have Especially Contributed to Printing No attempt has been made here to go into the story of the American invention of printing machinery and appliances. The most important portion of that story will be found in another volume of this series. The story of the introduction of printing and its spread through the Colonies before 1775 has been told with some detail. The development of the newspaper has been sketched. The reader is introduced to a few great printers who have made lasting contributions to American life, art, and industry. Some account is given of a few of the leading printer-publishers. Familiar names will be missed. Sometimes they are omitted because they are publishers only and not printers, more often because space lacked for the treatment of any but a few typical cases. The story of the government printing office is briefly told and there is a very short sketch of the organization of the industry among employers and employees. The writer ventures to hope that a study of this book may lead to a wider knowledge and deeper interest in that history of America of which the history of Ameri can printing is a part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gutenberg, and the Art of Printing But no one of the good and great of the past was permitted to lead the way in embodying thought on the printed page, save the wonderful man sketched in this volume. Out of a full heart of reverence, then, it is most fitting to embalm the memory of Gutenberg. While musing on certain old archives touching the history of printing, it was suggested by literary friends, that we weave a memorial narrative of the Chevalier and artisan honored in bringing the art to light. Accordingly we engaged in the work, hav ing culled the most authentic warp and woof within reach. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Printing Its Birth and Growth Classic Reprint

Download or read book Printing Its Birth and Growth Classic Reprint written by William Jaggard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Printing: Its Birth and Growth To the general question, When was printing invented? The average man answers, In the fifteenth century, or thereabouts, for so inferior school-books and cyclopaedias teach, without reservation. The average individual is much too apathetic to question what he sees in cold print, or to search in more reliable quarters for the origin of the various arts and sciences. So, touching the art which gives him his education and religion, which affords oft-times his living, and (too rarely) his recreation, the individual is either supremely oblivious or heedless of its real source. He knows not (and cares less) that the magic art was employed in primitive form by the ancients; so long ago, indeed, that the fifteenth century is but as a kind of yesterday. For over nine centuries the Chinese have practised printing by means of engraved pear-tree blocks, and in most parts of that empire to-day the natives prefer their old-fashioned method to the European manner. It is thought that they invented in the twelfth or thirteenth century moveable types of clay or wood, as Corean books dated I3I7 still exist, printed by means of such instruments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Survey of Printing: History and Practice A note of European importance was struck by the printing which came from the Doves Press, Hammersmith, established in 1900 by Mr. Cobden-sanderson. Here the typograph ical genius of Emery Walker, which had hith erto been very largely an influence - a power behind the throne of good typography rather than an individual expression of creative work - expressed itself in the Doves type. This fount was modelled closely on Jenson's, and it made the Doves Press books the high water mark of the printing revival. Download or read book An Outline of the History of Printing written by Robert Alexander Peddie and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the History of Printing: To Which Is Added the History of Printing in Colours With the opening of the seventeenth century a period begins in which the art of printing continues the process of degeneration from its artistic beginnings, which was seen at the end of the previous century. It is a period of great happenings in political life, of re'volutions long drawn out in England and France, and these inevitably left their impress upon the craft. The pamphlet, very little used in the fifteenth century, and only making a sporadic appearance in the sixteenth century, mostly, of course, in connection with the Lutheran controversy, became one of the normal methods of publicity, and the newspaper - the genuine periodical, not the mere paper of news - made its appearance. Book A Short History of the Art of Printing in England Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the Art of Printing in England Classic Reprint written by Arthur Powell and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Art of Printing in England The object of this little treatise is to present a brief but fairly complete sketch of the history of Printing in this country. By the Art of Printing is generally understood the art of printing from moveable types. It is on this basis that I have dealt with the subject, no reference being made to Lithography, Copperplate printing, or the other processes by which impressions are obtained. As my readers will be found chiefly among the printers themselves, I have not thought it necessary to describe operations with which they are familiar. At the same time it is hoped that sufficient explanation is given to render the work intelligible to those who are unacquainted with the practice of the art. Being limited as to space, it has been my endeavour, after the introductory chapter, to confine myself strictly to the development of the Art in England, and to state all facts as tersely as possible. As, however, the work is published in commemoration of our first English Printer, I have written his biography at greater length than I should otherwise have done. Wherever practicable, I have sought the original sources of information, but want of time has prevented me from proving some dates and statements as thoroughly as I could wish. My thanks are due to Mr. William Blades, for supplying me with the means of obtaining photographic blocks of several old engravings; to Mr. Elliot Stock, for affording the opportunity of producing a facsimile of a page of the first book printed in England; to Mr. John Southward, for many valuable suggestions: and to Messrs. Koenig & Bauer, Messrs. Miller & Richard, Mr. Talbot Reed, Mr. Wm. Conisbee, Mr. W. Dawson, Mr. Samuel Bremner, Mr. J. M. Napier, and other gentlemen, for information they have given me.
