Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Political Parties in the Province of New York, 1760-1776 Under the inspiration of one of Professor Turner's illuminating suggestions, I began, while a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin several years ago, to collect material for a history of the nominating convention in the United States. That great work remains still unpublished, having fined itself down to the modest essay which is now presented. Even so small a venture would have been still further delayed, or rendered impossible altogether, but for the ready assistance that has been accorded at every turn. In this connection, it is a pleasure to mention the officers and assistants of the libraries where most of the material was collected: The Library of the Wisconsin Historical Society; the Library of the New York Historical Society; the Library of Columbia University; the Lenox Library; the New York State Library at Albany. I owe much to the suggestions and criticisms of Professor Wilbur C. Abbott, formerly my colleague, now of Yale University, and of Professor Frank H. Hodder, my present colleague in the University of Kansas. But I owe most to the example of certain inspiring teachers: Frederick J. Turner, Charles H. Haskins, Victor Coffin, Herbert L. In this probing history, Ned C. Landsman demonstrates how the Middle Colonies came to function as a distinct region. He argues that while each territory possessed varying social, religious, and political cultures, the collective lands of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania were unified in their particular history and place in the imperial and Atlantic worlds. Landsman shows that the societal cohesiveness of the three colonies originated in the commercial and military rivalries among Native nations and developed further with the competing involvement of the European powers. They eventually emerged as the focal point in the contest for dominion over North America. In relating this progression, Landsman discusses various factors in the region’s development, including the Enlightenment, evangelical religion, factional politics, religious and ethnic diversity, and distinct systems of Protestant pluralism. Book excerpt: Based on careful work with rare archival sources, this book fills a gap in the history of New York Catholicism by chronicling anti-Catholic feeling in pre-Revolutionary and early national periods. Colonial New York, despite its reputation for pluralism, tolerance, and diversity, was also marked by severe restrictions on religious and political liberty for Catholics. The logic of the American Revolution swept away the religious barriers, but Anti-Federalists in the 1780s enacted legislation preventing Catholics from holding office and nearly succeeded in denying them the franchise. The latter effort was blocked by the Federalists, led by Alexander Hamilton, who saw such things as an impediment to a new, expansive nationalist politics. By the early years of the nineteenth century, Catholics gained the right to hold office due to their own efforts in concert with an urban-based branch of the Republicans, which included radical exiles from Europe. With the contributions of Catholics to the War of 1812 and the subsequent collapse of the Federalist Party, by 1820 Catholics had become a key part of the triumphant Republican coalition, which within a decade would become the new Democratic Party of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren.
