Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious book by one of the most original and provocative thinkers in science studies offers a sophisticated new understanding of the nature of scientific, mathematical, and engineering practice and the production of scientific knowledge. Andrew Pickering offers a new approach to the unpredictable nature of change in science, taking into account the extraordinary number of factors—social, technological, conceptual, and natural—that interact to affect the creation of scientific knowledge. In his view, machines, instruments, facts, theories, conceptual and mathematical structures, disciplined practices, and human beings are in constantly shifting relationships with one another—"mangled" together in unforeseeable ways that are shaped by the contingencies of culture, time, and place. Situating material as well as human agency in their larger cultural context, Pickering uses case studies to show how this picture of the open, changeable nature of science advances a richer understanding of scientific work both past and present. Pickering examines in detail the building of the bubble chamber in particle physics, the search for the quark, the construction of the quarternion system in mathematics, and the introduction of computer-controlled machine tools in industry. He uses these examples to address the most basic elements of scientific practice—the development of experimental apparatus, the production of facts, the development of theory, and the interrelation of machines and social organization.

  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as a classic in its field, Constructing Quarks recounts the history of the post-war conceptual development of elementary-particle physics. Inviting a reappraisal of the status of scientific knowledge, Andrew Pickering suggests that scientists are not mere passive observers and reporters of nature. Rather they are social beings as well as active constructors of natural phenomena who engage in both experimental and theoretical practice. "A prodigious piece of scholarship that I can heartily recommend."—Michael Riordan, New Scientist "An admirable history. . . . Detailed and so accurate."—Hugh N. Pendleton, Physics Today

Book Past Years in Pickering

Download or read book Past Years in Pickering written by William R. Wood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Past Years in Pickering: Sketches of the History of the Community Ontario, that once was "Canada West," is becoming in more senses than one "Old Ontario." Not a few of its settlements have passed and many more are nearing a hundred years of life. The life of the past century in every Ontario community is worth recording, and if it is to be adequately written it must be done before the participants in its experiences have all passed away. This book is an attempt to do that task for the Township of Pickering. It does not profess to be a formal history. It is a series of sketches written with little endeavor after literary distinction, aiming to present in a simple way some true conception of the more important phases of the township's life. No apology is made for the task being undertaken by one not born within the bounds of the township. Had some one of Pickering's sons undertaken it - and she has many who could have done the work well - I should have rejoiced, and gladly taken what place I might among his assistants. But none volunteered and the hour of the century's close was about to strike, - and I have made what attempt I could. Book The Evolution of an English Town

Download or read book The Evolution of an English Town written by Gordon Home and published by . This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of Pickering reproduces the 1999 hardback and has taken the opportunity to bring the town's story from its beginnings down to 2009.Gordon Home (1878 - 1969) was a prolific author, journalist and artist and was the Art Editor of the 'Tatler' magazine. His well-received 'Yorkshire Coast and Moorland Scenes' of 1904 led him to Pickering to write its history. He wrote 'The Evolution of an English Town: Pickering' in 1905 and the book quickly became established as a model for other local history books. The book was reproduced in hardback in 1999 by the Blackthorn Press with the addition of a further chapter on Pickering's history in the twentieth century by local historian, John Rushton. Gordon Home went on to write travel books about Britain, France and Italy and after service as a Major in France and Africa in the First World War, he took up archaeology and architectural history. He was editor for Dent's Cathedral Series and published historical and topographical works, illustrated with his own paintings.John Rushton studied at University College and the London School of Economics. He came to Ryedale as tutor organiser for the Workers' Educational Association in 1959 and developed local studies throughout the District. He was active in the foundation of the Beck Isle Museum in Pickering and in recent years he has lectured for the WEA and Hull University. He was awarded the MBE in 2005 for 'services to the community'. Other books for the Blackthorn Press include 'Yorkshire in the Reign of Elizabeth I' and 'The History of Ryedale' with others in preparation. This history of Pickering reproduces the 1999 hardback and has taken the opportunity to bring the town's story down to 2009.
