Book Explorations in Ancient and Modern Philosophy Volume 2

Download or read book Explorations in Ancient and Modern Philosophy Volume 2 written by M. F. Burnyeat and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: M. F. Burnyeat taught for 14 years in the Philosophy Department of University College London, then for 18 years in the Classics Faculty at Cambridge, 12 of them as the Laurence Professor of Ancient Philosophy, before migrating to Oxford in 1996 to become a Senior Research Fellow in Philosophy at All Souls College. The studies, articles and reviews collected in these two volumes of Explorations in Ancient and Modern Philosophy were all written, and all but two published, before that decisive change. Whether designed for a scholarly audience or for a wider public, they range from the Presocratics to Augustine, from Descartes and Bishop Berkeley to Wittgenstein and G. E. Moore. Their subject-matter falls under four main headings: 'Logic and Dialectic' and 'Scepticism Ancient and Modern', which make up the first volume, with 'Knowledge' and 'Philosophy and the Good Life' contained in this, the second volume. The title 'Explorations' well expresses Burnyeat's ability to discover new aspects of familiar texts, new ways of solving old problems. In his hands the history of philosophy becomes itself a philosophical activity.

Book The History of Philosophy From Thales to Comte Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book The History of Philosophy From Thales to Comte Vol 2 of 2 written by George Henry Lewes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Philosophy From Thales to Comte, Vol. 2 of 2: Modern Philosophy Ncient philosophy reigned for about years before its final deposition by Theology. An interval of another years may be assigned as the Transition Period between Ancient and Modern Philosophy, is. From' the extinction of the Greek schools, in the sixth century, to the separation of Philosophy from Theology, by Bacon and Descartes, in the sixteenth. The peculiarity of this Transition Period is the constant struggle of Reason to assert and justify her independence the claim of Philosophy to exist as a function of the human mind. Andthis claim, under varying fortunes, was made good. The struggle, long doubtful, ended in emancipation. We have seen how Philosophy, disengaging itself from Theology, successively tried to solve all the capital problems and how, failing everywhere, because the Method pursued was one which made failure inevitable, it once more, through out Christendom, relapsed under the dominion of Theology. We have now to see the inevitable disquiet of Thought. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A History of Ancient Philosophy I

Download or read book A History of Ancient Philosophy I written by Giovanni Reale and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the origins of Western philosophy, the profound creation of the Hellenic genius, Reale presents an appreciation of the Naturalists, the Sophists, Socrates, and the Minor Socratics. Special attention is paid to the Eleatics because their problems decisively mark Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy. Interpretation of the Sophists benefits from the recent reevaluation of their thought. Socrates himself would be inconceivable without the Sophists since he is one of them. Socrates is given major prominence. Plato, Aristotle, and all of Hellenistic philosophy are deeply impregnated with his words and spirit. The teachings of the Minor Socratics are interpreted as one-sided reductions of the pluralistic values of Socratic thought and as anticipations of some issues that explode later in the Hellenistic Age. There are two appendices. The first concerns Orphism and contains a series of documents indispensable for the comprehension of some aspects of pre-Socratic and Platonic thought. The second explains the key to understanding the message of the Greeks--the message of "theorein".

Book Philosophy in the Modern World

Download or read book Philosophy in the Modern World written by Anthony Kenny and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-09-03 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Anthony Kenny tells the fascinating story of the development of philosophy in the modern world, from the early nineteenth century to the late twentieth century. Alongside (and intertwined with) extraordinary scientific advances, cultural changes, and political upheavals, the last two centuries have seen some of the most intriguing and original developments in philosophical thinking, which have transformed our understanding of ourselves and our world. In the first part of the book Kenny offers a lively narrative introducing the major thinkers in their historical context. He then proceeds to guide the reader lucidly through the nine main areas of philosophical work in the period, offering a serious engagement with the ideas and arguments. Among those we meet are the great figures of continental European philosophy, from Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, and Nietzsche to Heidegger and Sartre; the Pragmatists who first developed a distinctively American philosophical tradition; Marx, Darwin, and Freud, the non-philosophers whose influence on philosophy was immense; Wittgenstein and Russell, friends and colleagues who set the agenda for analytic philosophy in the twentieth century. Philosophy in the Modern World brings to completion Kenny's magisterial New History of Western Philosophy. The four volumes have been designed to dovetail with each other: they offer a unified overview of the entire development of philosophy, allowing readers to trace themes through the centuries, from antiquity to the present day. The story is illuminated by a selection of intriguing and beautiful illustrations.

Book Ancient Philosophy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Shields
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2022-12-30
  • ISBN : 1000817245
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Ancient Philosophy written by Christopher Shields and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ancient Philosophy (2012), Christopher Shields expanded on the coverage of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle in his earlier book, Classical Philosophy (2003), to include the philosophy of the Hellenistic era. In this new edition (2023), Shields reaches even further to include material on Neoplatonism and on Augustine and Proclus, capturing—from Thales of Miletus to the end of the sixth century CE—all of what might be called ancient philosophy. It traces the important connections between the periods and individuals of more than 1,200 years of philosophy’s history without losing sight of the novelties and dynamics unique to each. The coverage of the Presocratics, Sophists, Plato, and Stoicism has also been expanded so as to highlight Plato’s responses to the Sophistic movement in the development of his Theory of Forms. And, finally, a valuable companion volume, with Shields’s focused translations of the important sources referred to in Ancient Philosophy, Second Edition, will soon be published, obviating the need for a massive anthology of discordant voices. Ancient Philosophy, Second Edition, retains its helpful structure: each philosophical position receives: (1) a brief introduction, (2) a sympathetic review of its principal motivations and primary supporting arguments, and (3) a short assessment, inviting readers to evaluate its plausibility. The result is a book that brings the ancient arguments to life, making the introduction truly contemporary. It continues to serve as both a first stop and a well-visited resource for any student of the subject. Key updates in the second edition Extends the range of coverage well into the sixth century CE by offering a new chapter on Neoplatonism and early Christian philosophy, featuring discussions of Proclus and Augustine. Explains the conflicts between Plato and the Sophists by highlighting their approaches to rhetoric as an instrument of persuasion, offering a helpful explanation of two senses of argument. Includes new coverage of Plato’s argument from the Simplicity of the Soul, Argument from Affinity, and Argument against Rhetoric. Includes coverage of Aristotle’s political naturalism . May be used with a soon-to-be-published companion volume of primary source material, all of it translated by Christopher Shields specifically for the reader of this Second Edition.

This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Philosophy, Vol. 2 of 3 In accordance with the character of the different epochs, modern philosophy has to rise above the philosophical wisdom of the ancients and the theological wisdom of lthe imiddle Ages. N o theories will meet the requirements of modern times, nor deserve the name of philosophy except such as recognise both the here, or real, of antiquity, and the hereafter, or ideal, of the Middle Ages, and attempt to reconcile the two. Any system which left one of these sides out.of account, or which did not admit that there was a point where the two coincided, would cease to be philosophical.' And the differ ence between systems depends upon the different manner in which these two sides are conceived of (as extension and thought, as nature and spirit, as real and rational, and in a Special degree upon the different methods of reconciling them. In the latter lies the main feature, and, therefore, the real principle of any system of modern philosophy. In the period of transition from the Middle Ages, there appeared side by side the philosophers who forgot God, and the mystics who despised the world. They Showed where the point Was to be found from which both natural and supernatural know ledge are seen to be' subordinate and partial aspects of a whole. For the Microcosmos of the' former, and the Micro theos or, God in miniature, of bohme, is.man, whose function. Is, to introduce thoughts of God into the world, to lead it to God. When philosophy becomes know ledge of man, it. Does more than merely transcend the one-sidedness of knowledge of the' Cosmos, and. Of know ledge of God; it now for the first time corresponds to our idea of it 2 and. Henceforth the path that philosophy follows is not to reach self by starting from the world or from God, but to start from self and find one's way back to a world and to God.
