Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States Navy, Vol. 1 of 3: From 1775 to 1901 It would be difficult to exaggerate the value of the services that have been rendered by the United States navy. The Continental cruisers and privateers - the latter corresponding to the militia on land - during the War of the Revolution captured about eight hundred vessels from the enemy, and, making the moderate allowance of fifteen men to each craft, we have a total of twelve thousand prisoners taken on. the high seas by a maritime force which at no time consisted of more than five thousand men. About five hundred of these prisoners were soldiers of some of the best English regiments, and had they been captured on land the incident would have occupied many pages in our histories. It was by means of our maritime forces that the American armies were supplied with the munitions of war during that terrible struggle. In our two years of naval war with France the work was all done by the navy. About eighty vessels, mostly privateers, carrying over three thousand men, were captured from the enemy. Again, the wars with the States of Barbary were brought to a highly honorable termination by the unaided efforts of the navy, the United States securing privileges that had been denied to European powers. The naval War of 1812 did more to humble the pride of Great Britain than any other contest. The Revolution was a struggle for independence on land, but it required a second fight to secure our "inalienable rights" on the high seas. Book The History of the Navy During the Rebellion Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the Navy During the Rebellion Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles B. Boynton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Navy During the Rebellion, Vol. 1 With England and France, therefore, the most interesting question connected with our affairs has been, whether we could create a truly formidable Navy. Our naval strength was the standard by which they measured their power to attack, and ours to defend. They did not believe it possible for us to pro duce a Navy in a few months which could both seal up our long line of sea-coast and defy their own most formidable ships, and this mistaken judgment was the main in uence in deciding their policy in regard to American affairs. A history of the Navy, then, is a history of that power by which Europe gauges our national importance, and by which our rank among nations is assigned: because, until a true Christian civilization prevails, the nobler attributes of a nation will be overlooked in view of its ability to carry on a great war; and because, if the 'united States should ever wage a great European war, the battles would be mainly upon the seas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Navy, Vol. 1 of 5: A History From the Earliest Times to the Present Yet, even if British students were in the habit of thoroughly digesting the ordinary British histories which are within their reach, they would still know little about the nature and services of the British Navy. Our greater historians deal very sparingly with those subjects. Many of them seem to have been deterred by an exaggerated estimate of the attendant difficulties, or by an impression that naval history is far too technical to be understood by lay people. Others have altogether failed to awaken to the importance of the matter, and have, by that very failure, convicted themselves of incompetence. As for the popular historians, the compilers of school histories, text-books, and such-like, they have for the most part, and indeed almost without exception, bungled, where they have not shamefully scamped, the facts of our naval story. Book The Story of Our Navy From Colonial Days to the Present Time Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Our Navy From Colonial Days to the Present Time Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Willis John Abbot and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our Navy From Colonial Days to the Present Time, Vol. 1 This volume is a history, told in popular, narrative form, of the United States Navy, from its beginning to May 1, 1916. Within its compass is not space for all the events, or even for the mention of all the figures in America's defence of her honors upon the seas. Rather does it aim to give a running narrative of the course of the development of the United States Navy, from its earliest beginnings to the present time, and to tell the story of the picturesque features of its early struggles and its later triumphs. The author desires to express his thanks to the Hon. Theodore Sutro for permission to use the copyrighted reproductions of certain paintings by the distinguished marine artist, Edward Moran. The fine examples represented in this book are chosen from thirteen paintings to typify thirteen chapters in the History of America on the Sea. Nothing is better adapted to educate and stimulate American interests upon the ocean than a careful study of the reproductions of these remarkable paintings. This book was released on 2001-12-01 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans think of the Korean War as death and hardship in the bitter hills of Korea. It was certainly this, and for those who fought this is what they generally saw. Yet every foot of the struggles forward, every step of the retreats, the overwhelming victories, the withdrawals and last ditch stands had their seagoing support and overtones. The spectacular ones depended wholly on amphibious power -- the capability of the twentieth century scientific Navy to overwhelm land-bound forces at the point of contact. Yet the all pervading influence of the sea was present even when no major landing or retirement or reinforcement highlighted its effect. When navies clash in gigantic battle or hurl troops ashore under irresistible concentration of ship-borne guns and planes, nations understand that sea power is working. It is not so easy to understand that this tremendous force may effect its will silently, steadily, irresistibly even though no battles occur. No clearer example exists of this truth in wars dark record than in Korea. Communist-controlled North Korea had slight power at sea except for Soviet mines. So beyond this strong underwater phase the United States Navy and allies had little opposition on the water. It is, therefore, easy to fail to recognize the decisive role navies played in this war fought without large naval battles.

As a consequence it has always had a special significance and has over the centuries entrenched itself in the national psyche, making itself manifest not only through the hero-worship ofits principal characters such as Horatio Nelson and Sir Francis Drake but also finding expression through art, music, and literature.Like any great national institution, the navy is a complex web of interconnected histories - operational, strategic, political, economic, administrative, technological, and social. Now updated for its paperback edition, The Oxford Illustrated History of the Royal Navy, in a series of fourteenchapters, provides a thorough and engaging treatment of these histories, covering every aspect of naval history from the Anglo-Saxon period to the dawn of the new millennium. The book explores:Major action and campaigns - the defeat of the Spanish Armada, the Anglo-Dutch Wars, the Battle of Trafalgar, the Battle of Jutland, the Atlantic Campaign of 1939-45, the Falklands conflict, the Gulf War, and attacks on terrorist bases in Afghanistan in 2001.Developments in naval history and technology - navigational advances, surveying, constructional developments, disaster relief, the suppression of the slave trade, and the Strategic Defence Review of 1998.Key personalities - Drake and Nelson, Samuel Pepys, Francis Beaufort, Jackie Fisher, Lord Charles Beresford, Lord Jellicoe.Naval life - recruitment (press gangs, training, education, discipline), tactics, gunnery and armaments, amphibious operations, wages and conditions, victualling and supply. How and when did Britain's perception of the sea change from a thing of fear to a 'moat defence' (in the words of Shakespeare)? How did the navy's administrative systems develop during the Tudor period?During the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, its greatest period of expansion, how did the navy develop strategically and operationally? How successfully did the navy defend the British Empire during the nineteenth century? What role did the navy play in Victorian Britain's thirst for exploring of the world? What technical developments have been important to the navy? What effect did two world wars have on the role of the Royal Navy? What does the modern navy look like now and what about the future? With a full chronology, which has been brought up to date to the end of 2001, an extensive list of further reading, 16 pages of colour plates, 23 maps, 6 special Action Station diagram 'box' features, and around 200 black-and-white integrated illustrations, this is an authoritative and highlyreadable account of a unique fighting service and its people.

Book The History of the Navy of the United States of America Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Navy of the United States of America, Vol. 1 of 2 While biographies of naval men are usually replete with interest, on account of the hazards and stirring incidents of the sea, few general records of nautical events have been found to attract attention, beyond the value that is attached to naked facts. If such has been the case with most of the histories of even the marine of Great Britain, a service that admits of the unity and interest that belong to the operations of fleets, still more may it be looked for in the records of the isolated and simpler incidents of a navy like that of the United States. The difficulty of overcoming this great obstacle has been foreseen from the commencement of this work, and some attempts, that are connected with the arrangements of the subject, have been made to obviate it. The writer is far from flattering himself with entire success, for a history of detached combats is, in truth, a series of episodes, the mind scarcely becoming concentrated on one, when it is required to give its attention to another, while the connecting materials, according to the ordinary practice, are merely a dry detail of documents. Download or read book The New American Navy Vol 1 written by John D. Long and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New American Navy, Vol. 1: Illustrated With Drawings by Henry Reuterdahl and With Photographs Since the war with Spain our navy has stead ily strengthened the hold which it already had on popular sentiment. Its brilliant record at that time, its substantial consummation of the war by the unprecedented thoroughness of its victories at Manila and Santiago, the clean and creditable conduct of its commissioned and civilian officials in charge of its business affairs, and the neces sity of its expanded equipment and service by reason of our added insular possessions, have stimulated the feeling of national interest in it and dependence on it. These have also led to most generous appropriations by successive con gresses for its continued increase in officers and men, in ships, and in all the facilities of naval construction. The object of this volume is to give information as to the start and progress of this increase, the development into What is now called the New Navy, as well as to tell of its recent exploits.
