I regret that the bulk to which the text has swelled has caused me to leave out several notes which were designed to have a place in the Appendix; but I believe that their substance will find a place as least as fitting among the more general disquisitions which I hope to give in the fifth volume. Download or read book The History of Normandy and of England written by Sir Francis Palgrave and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-27 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Normandy and of England, Vol. 4 § 1. We have seen how William the Conqueror has been gathered to his fathers. Usual pageantries ensued: loud praises bestowed upon the departed monarch by those who enjoyed his bounty or profited by his patronage. Poets abounded in court and cloister, expatiating upon his merits, vying with one another in composing the epitaph, worthy to be inscribed upon the rich tomb at Caen, raised between presbytery and choir, concealing William's last conquest, his contested grave. A splendid work was this memorial, studded with gems, and covered with the plates of precious metal hammered and embossed by Ottone, the Goldsmith - Otto Aurifaber in the pages of Domesday. And in speaking of my topographical researches, though I do not think that in the present volume I have had any direct help from Mr. J. R. Green, yet I have often felt the benefit of earlier inquiries of the same kind made in his company. I may truly say that it was from him that I first learned to look on a town as a whole with a kind of personal history, instead of simply the place where such and such a church or castle was to be found. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Normandy and of England, Vol. 3 My Dear Sir, You have honoured me with your kind permission that I should explain, in a few words addressed to yourself, the circumstances in which the Third and Fourth Volumes of this History are now published. The Fourth Volume was printed throughout (with exception of the "Summary") several years since. Some corrections in it were afterwards planned by my father; but it represents, on the whole, his maturest judgment on the events narrated. The completion of the Third Volume (postponed for personal reasons to the composition of the Fourth), had formed the author's occupation during the leisure hours of the last four years of his life. Great part had been written previously; and it was his wish to revise the whole, incorporating in it the fruits of additional study and of visits to the scenes of the principal events described. Death, however, in July 1861, stayed his hand when this revision had been completed only to the end of Chapter III. From this point onwards (Chapters IV to XV), the book has been edited by me. Book The History of the Norman Vol 6

Download or read book The History of the Norman Vol 6 written by Edward Augustus Freeman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Norman, Vol. 6: Conquest of England; Its Causes and Its Results This Index to the History of the Norman Conquest has been adapted to the first edition of all the volumes, and to the third edition of the first and second volume. As the paging of the editions differs considerably, that of the third is marked by the prefix. In all cases where this does not occur, the same paging serves for both. It was not thought necessary to give references to the second edition, as all the volumes of that edition already have indexes. The extra labour would have been great, not to speak of the confusion which would be caused by three sets of paging.
