Book A Glimpse of Manipuri Literary Works

Download or read book A Glimpse of Manipuri Literary Works written by Nunglekpam Premi and published by . This book was released on 2018-02-16 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the huge development of Arts and literary works during the time of King Kiyamba's rule till King Chandrakriti (A.D. 1467-1886) in Manipur. The interesting fact is that Manipur witnessed its own two millennia old cultural framework through well developed literary language, rich cultural heritage, customs and traditions, rites and rituals which provides a living testimony to its birth and rise of Meetei civilization. Though, the Manipuris settling both in the hills and the plains speak different diverse sub-branches of the Tibeto-Burman language, the present Manipuri language which is evolved out of the early traditional Meetei language, becomes the lingua franca of the different groups. It is recorded that, Manipuri came into contact with the Indo-Aryan languages by the end of 17th century in the pattern of simultaneous placing of synonyms. The rise of the influence of Sanskrit and Bengal literatures on Manipuri literature was increasing rapidly. Most of the ideas and influences come from the Indo-Gangetic valley and gradually reacted with local beliefs and tradition. As a result, Manipur in the 18th century witness the arrival of three different forms of Hindu religion in the state. A Sanskrit word and or with a Bengali word is found replacing the vernacular Manipuri from time to time. Rare Manuscripts written on indigenous paper covered with a variety of subjects, which studies of traditional faith, mythologies, rituals, administrative codes, chronicles, genealogies, description of nature, ballads and other imaginative works, which were collected and safely kept in the charge of the Amaiba Loisang and Pundit Loisang, were destroyed in the historical bonfire Puya Meithaba (1732) during the reign of Maharaj Garib Niwaj (1709-1748).The old Manipuri literature was made with simple verses which are found sung as hymn to Gods and secular deities. Lai Harouba ushered in the dawning of Manipuri literature and poetry.The-literature of a people is a part of the culture and therefore the cultural history of the people is follow with the history of the literature of a people. There found to have four periods in Manipuri literature. The period from the 8th century to 1074 A.D. is the old period of Manipuri literature. The Early Medieval Period covers the years from 1074 to 1709. This period marked the turning point in the cultural as well as historical events which follows the worshipping of the Vishnu was begun for the first time in the year 1470. It was an important watershed in the cultural life of the people and Manipuri literature. From 1709 Manipur literature passed into a new phase which mark off another period, the late Medieval Period and went into 1819. The period of British ruled in Manipur paved the way for coming of the Modern Period in Manipuri literature.

Book Early Meitei History

Download or read book Early Meitei History written by Rena Laisram and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EARLY MEITE1 HISTORY : Religion, Society and the Manipur Puyas is a concerted attempt towards presenting an objective reconstruction of the religion and society in early Meitei history. Studies undertaken so far have been inadequate in terms of handling the mass of manuscripts called Puyas which are the only major written source for the study. Notwithstanding the existence of reliable historical material alongside mythical narrative, the problem has been the treatment of the Puyas by majority of the scholars as authentic historical records per $e. This book offers a fresh approach to the treatment of the subject. It integrates critical study of the Puyas, experiences of the living tradition archaeological evidence and secondary data sources to comprehend the subject from a wider perspective. The study focuses on ancestor worship; a critical study of which is crucial for understanding other aspects of Manipur history. The traditional religion passed through a long process of evolution and survived even after Vaisnavism was declared the state religion of Manipur in the 18Thcentury A.D. The book will serve its purpose if it contributes towards a meaningful interpretation of the history of the Meiteis. The work is also aimed at stimulating discourses on issues such as .identity, ethnicity and nationality affecting contemporary Manipur society. It is hoped that the study will provide a more perceptive understanding of the past, which is essential in order to understand the present and subsequent periods of Meitei history.

Book William Pettigrew Towards Early Modernity in Manipur

Download or read book William Pettigrew Towards Early Modernity in Manipur written by Pamkhuila Shaiza and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a biography of William Pettigrew, who worked as a Christian Baptist Missionary in Manipur during the early 20th Century. The first attempt of its kind, it is an outcome of 'the reports and letters' of William Pettigrew to American Baptist Foreign Mission Society "on Manipur" from 1896 till 1933. Oral narratives also helped understand the impact of William Pettigrew in changing the course of Manipur history towards modernity. The Pettigrews (William and Alice Goreham Pettigrew) were responsible in bringing Christianity, Western Education, and Western Medicine to Manipur. Despite such positive modern endeavours, the acceptance of Christianity, western education, and medicine came at a great cost. The indigenous natives had many of their traditions, beliefs, and customs obliterated by the missionary activities during the British Imperial Raj. Pettigrew was also responsible for recruiting the 2000 Labour Corps (of the 22nd Manipur Labour Corps) during the First World War, earning him the title of "War Captain", and Kaisar-i-Hind for working among the indigenous Indians.
