Download or read book North Carolina Agricultural Statistics Vol 118 written by North Carolina Crop Reporting Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Agricultural Statistics, Vol. 118: Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Issue; Historical Data, 1867-1968 Many livestock producers, dairymen and poultrymen, slaughtermen, auctions, feed lots and other agencies associ ated with the livestock industry voluntarily supplied basic data used to develop these statistics. Their cooperation is sincerely appreciated. Crop and livestock reporting is a service rendered to farmers and others in North Carolina by the U. S. Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. The collection and dissemination of agricultural statistics is the oldest activity of the United States Department of Agriculture, having had its beginning in 1863 during the civil War. Recognizing the many advantages of a joint relationship between the State and Federal Governments in the development of accurate and timely agricultural statistics, North Carolina, in 1919, entered into a cooperative agreement with the U. S. Depart ment of Agriculture to provide farmers and the general public with detailed agricultural statistics which are vital to the economy of our State. This agreement resulted in the forming of the Statistics Division of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture, which is better known as the North Carolina Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Book Eastern North Carolina Farming

Download or read book Eastern North Carolina Farming written by Frank Stephenson and Barbara Nichols Mulder and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Settled as a maritime and agricultural colony, North Carolina's history has always been intertwined with agriculture and farming. After the Civil War, North Carolina became the nation's top grower of tobacco, and one of the country's largest tobacco companies--the American Tobacco Company--flourished from the huge quantities of Eastern North Carolina-grown tobacco that was purchased. With the growing success of cotton farming and other crops and livestock--including corn, peanuts, and hogs--the region was particularly rich in subsistence farming. Over the course of the 20th century, farming and agriculture went through tremendous change. The familiar landscape of cotton and tobacco began to shift and include more varied crops, such as soybeans and sweet potatoes. At the same time, hand tools were exchanged for tractors and combines. Eastern North Carolina Farming showcases the rich history of this agriculturally dynamic region while telling the individual stories of farmers who grew for families, markets, and distribution.
