Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Italy, From the Abdication of Napoleon I, Vol. 2: With Introductory References to That Earlier Times In subsequent portions or the same work published at a much later date he refers to the statement of Pistolesi but adheres to his own. - Idem, vol. liii. p. 137. Tit. Pio Nono. Vol. lxii. p. 292, Tit. Scommunica. Note to page 484. In Gibbon's "Antiquities of the House of Brunswick" will be found a very clear and full statement of the connection both of Modena and Ferrara with the House of Este. Modena was a free city, like the other towns of Tuscany; after the death of the Countess of Matilda, like the others, it submitted in time to the supremacy of a lord. It fell under the dominion of the Dukes of Ferrara, was conquered from them by Julius II., who asserted the title of the Church to it, as part of the exarchate of Ravenna and of the bequest of Matilda. It was not long severed from the dominions of the House of Este, being ceded to the Duke of Ferrara by Leo X. at the request of Francis I. In the same treatise the reader will find a detailed account of the annexation of Ferrara to the Holy See. Some doubt is thrown by Gibbon on the illegitimacy of the Duke Cæsar, from whom the Pope reclaimed the possession. There seems, however, no reason to suppose that the claim of the Pope was not founded in right. Cæsar was unquestionably illegitimate at his birth, and there is no proof to sustain the conjecture that he was legitimised by a subsequent marriage of his parents - the only plausible ground upon which the charges of an unjust annexation can be maintained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Kingdom is weakening, and this book helps to explain why. Alvin Jackson examines the UK in the light of the experience of similar union states elsewhere, offering the first sustained comparative study across the long nineteenth century and beyond. The UK was not in fact the only self-styled 'united kingdom' of the time: Jackson argues strikingly and originally that Britain exported the idea of union through the advocacy or encouragement of other multinational united kingdoms at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The work is distinctive in its geographical breadth. Jackson draws together the histories of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England and explores the links between them and Sweden-Norway, the United Netherlands, Austria-Hungary and the United Canadas - and many other polities across the globe. United Kingdoms looks too at the institutions and agencies affecting the condition of union - from monarchy, aristocracy, and religion through to class, money, and violence. Jackson offers new overarching arguments about the origins, survival, and fall of all union states, and in doing so, sheds new light on the particular history, condition, and fate of the UK.
