Download or read book The History of Ireland from Its Union with Great Britain in January 1801 to October 1810 written by Francis Plowden and published by Ganesha Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work takes Irish history from the Act of Union in 1801 through the next ten years of its volatile history and relationship with England. As a contemporary account saturated with documentary evidence by an astute Catholic political historian it is unsurprising that it too caused a scandal. Upon refusing to pay a libel charge, Plowden fled to France where he ended his days at the Scots College in Paris. Plowden's History is an essential resource for understanding the making of Ireland. --both works available together for the first time since original publication --continuation of the above work --contemporary Catholic account of the first ten turbulent years of the Union

Book The Irish Nation Vol 3

Download or read book The Irish Nation Vol 3 written by James Wills and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Nation, Vol. 3: Its History and Its Biography Temple Emmet, the elder, was considered, by those who knew him, a prodigy of attainment. His memory was astonishing, and his com mand of language strange and peculiar. He is said to have begun his profession of the law with the full and precise knowledge that is usually the attainment of a laborious life. But if we are to form an Opinion of his intellect from the account which remains of his style, judgment and the discursive faculty do not seem to have had much place. His language was not merely extravagantly figurative, but actually cast in the mould of verse; and even as poetry, it appeared in ated. He, nevertheless, soon attained practice, but died early, having had more business than had ever before been acquired by so young a man. The next brother, Thomas Addis Emmet, is better known. Of the three, he would appear to have had the most manageable combination of faculties. He also was called to the bar, and rose to early eminence. He was, like his brothers, early schooled to ultra-liberalism in politics; and though he did not join the United Irish conspiracy till 1796, he yet endeavoured in all things to serve its ends in his professional capacity. One occasion is mentioned, on which he acted in a manner remarkably characteristic of his family. Some persons were prosecuted for the administration of an unlawful oath. At a certain stage of the proceedings in court, Mr Emmet, having risen to speak to a point of law, took the opportunity to say that he did not consider the oath un lawful; and, to the astonishment of the court and all persons present, he added, My lords, here, in the presence of this legal court, this crowded auditory, in the presence of the Being that sees, and witnesses, and directs this judicial tribunal - here. My lords, I myself, in the pre sence of God, declare, I take the oath. It is mentioned that another barrister - well known as one of those United Irishmen who were ex patriated by the agreement with government - a Mr William Sampson, at nearly the same time, performed the same feat on a similar occasion, and with the same impunity. Book Ireland Under the Tudors Vol 3 of 3

Download or read book Ireland Under the Tudors Vol 3 of 3 written by Richard Bagwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Under the Tudors, Vol. 3 of 3: With a Succinct Account of the Earlier History It has not been thought generally necessary to give the dates both in old and new style. The officials, and English men generally, invariably refused to adopt the Gregorian calendar, but the priests, and many Irishmen who followed them, naturally took the opposite course. As a rule, there fore, the chronology is old style, but a double date has been given wherever confusion seemed likely to arise. It has often been said that religion had little or nothing to do with the Tudor wars in Ireland, but this is very far from the truth. It was the energy and devotion of the friars and Jesuits that made the people resist, and it was Spanish or papal gold that enabled the chiefs to keep the field. This volume shows how violent was the feeling against an ex communicated Queen, and, whether they were always right or not, we can scarcely wonder that Elizabeth and her ser vants saw an enemy of England in every active adherent of Rome. At first the Queen showed some signs of a wish to remain on friendly terms with the Holy See, but she became the Protestant champion even against her own inclination. Sixtus V. Admired her great qualities, and invited her to return to the bosom of the Church. Strange proposition! Says Ranke, as if she had it in her power to choose; as if her past life, the whole import of her being, her political position and attitude, did not, even supposing her conviction not to be sincere, enchain her to the Protestant cause, Elizabeth returned no answer, but she laughed.' This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Nation, Its History Its Biography, Vol. 4 He died on the 2d of March, 1869, at his residence, St Helen's, Booterstown, and was succeeded in the peerage by his son. Lord Gough, as a commander, showed the characteristics of his nation; he was hot and impetuous, and perhaps somewhat rash. With foes one half as brave and determined as the tr00ps he commanded, his Indian battles might have been less glorious in their issue. His conception of a battle was good; but in working out its details he did not always avoid or guard against those unfortunate mistakes by which English battles are so often marred. Yet, taking all in all, he stands amongst our greatest generals; simple and affectionate, brave to excess in the field, humble and deeply religious, Lord Gough was looked up to by his profession and beloved in Irish society, of which, when his military career was over, he was long an ornament and a pride. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phases of Irish History The twelve Chapters in this volume delivered as lectures before public audiences in Dublin, make no pretence to form a full course of Irish history for any period. Their purpose is to correct and supple ment. For the standpoint taken, no apology is necessary. Neither apathy nor antipathy can ever bring out the truth of history. I have been guilty Of some inconsistency in my Spelling of early Irish names, writing sometimes earlier, sometimes later forms. In the Index, I have endeavoured to remedy this defect. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Ireland, Vol. 4: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day; 1649 to 1782 In the earlier stages of the war the Ulster Catholics had refrained from interfering with the Scotch planters in their midst; they were strong in numbers, and it was best not to provoke them. Yet, it is not unlikely that some were con founded with the English and suffered with them; and perhaps it was for this reason that the garrison of Carrickfergus, mostly Scotch, issued from the town, in January, swept like a hurricane through Island Magee, and put every Catholic there, man, woman and child, to the sword. There is some disputeas to the number thus murdered, and also as to the time; but there is none as to the massacre having taken place, and none as to its being bloody and unprovoked.2 Henceforth the Scotch were even more dreaded than the English; and when General Monroe with Scots landed in April at Carrickfergus, the position of the Irish, already driven from Drogheda and Dundalk, became desperate, for there was then in Ulster an army, English and Scotch, of men.3 With part of their forces Monroe and Lord Conway captured Newry and overran Down;4 while Sir William Stewart, who commanded in the north-west the army of the Lagan, fell upon Sir Phelim o'neil] near Raphoe and defeated him with great loss; and Lord Montgomery captured Armagh, Charlemont and Dungannon. And if Monroe had been sufficiently active, the Catholic army would have been speedily destroyed.5 But, even as matters stood, they felt themselves beaten; they lost all hope of being able to continue the struggle, and resolved to abandon the war. Each one was to make the best terms he could. In this condition were the Catholics, dispirited, cowed, hopeless, when Owen Roe o'neill arrived in Ulster in July, and by the unanimous vote of the whole army was placed in chief command. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ireland Under the Tudors, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Succinct Account of the Earlier History Starting with this conception of the task before me, I have not attempted to please any party or school. The history of Ireland is at the best a sad one; but its study, if it be really studied for the truth's sake, can hardly fail to make men more tolerant. In Ireland, as in other countries, a purely Celtic population was unable to resist the impact of the Teutonic race. First came the pagan Northmen, with power to ruin, but without power to reconstruct. Then followed the anglo-normans, seeking for lands and lordships, but seeking them under the patronage of the Catholic Church. For a time it seemed as though the conquest would be complete; but the colony proved too weak for its work, and the mail-clad knights failed almost as completely as the Scandinavian corsairs.
