Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia is one of the most ethnically diverse societies in the world today. From its ancient indigenous origins to British colonisation followed by waves of European then international migration in the twentieth century, the island continent is home to people from all over the globe. Each new wave of settlers has had a profound impact on Australian society and culture. The Australian People documents the dramatic history of Australian settlement and describes the rich ethnic and cultural inheritance of the nation through the contributions of its people. It is one of the largest reference works of its kind, with approximately 250 expert contributors and almost one million words. Illustrated in colour and black and white, the book is both a comprehensive encyclopedia and a survey of the controversial debates about citizenship and multiculturalism now that Australia has attained the centenary of its federation.

Book Das Bild Griechenlands Im Spiegel Der Voelker 17 Bis 18 Jahrhundert the Image of Greece in the Mirror of Nations 17 Th 18 Th Centuries

Download or read book Das Bild Griechenlands Im Spiegel Der Voelker 17 Bis 18 Jahrhundert the Image of Greece in the Mirror of Nations 17 Th 18 Th Centuries written by Evangelos Konstantinou and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The research objective and discussion topic of the essays in the present volume is the image of Greece in the cultural, artistic and literary traditions in different countries in Europe and abroad, and the ways it was formed and modified. The essays raise also the issue to what extent this image corresponds to Greek realities. The main part of philhellenic images was formed during the early 19th century and during the 1820s and 1830s Philhellenism grew up to a European movement of considerable import. However, it is not only desirable, but also scientifically necessary to broaden the scope of the analysis of the reception of Greece in Europe and abroad in order to include both previous and subsequent forms of philhellenic images. Therefore the aim of the present volume is to concentrate on early forms of Philhellenism, but also on contemporary receptions of Greece in Europe and other continents. Besides an accurate account of how Greece has been perceived in the last four centuries, the essays also point out stereotypes and misconceptions that often characterize the image of Greece abroad. The volume gathers 30 works of researchers and experts from 14 countries and gives a new impetus to the research of Philhellenism.

Book Alien to Citizen

Download or read book Alien to Citizen written by Ann-Mari Jordens and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947 Australia began implementing a social policy which was to have profound and irrevocable effects on its history. One of the greatest, but generally unacknowledged, Australian achievements of this century resulted - the harmonious absorption by 1975 of over three million migrants and their children, from an increasingly diverse range of cultures. How was this accomplished? Ann-Mari Jordens has set out to find the answer, combing the Australian Archives to document the work of the federal agency responsible for this massive undertaking. Her findings challenge the conventional view that little was done during these years by Commonwealth governments to assist non-British migrants to settle in Australia. Alien to Citizen is essential reading for all concerned with the current debate about immigration, multiculturalism, citizenship, and the maintenance of social cohesion in Australia's ethnically and culturally diverse society.

Book excerpt: Out Here Down Under is a collection of documents and papers illuminating the development and character of ancient ‎history as a discipline in the Antipodes. It considers especially the distinctive and extraordinarily ‎popular program, championed by E. A. Judge, of studying classical and biblical corpora together under ‎one discipline, with an emphasis on the interpretation of documentary sources. ‎In twenty chapters, this volume considers such issues as the relationship between British and ‎Antipodean scholarship, the story and legacy of Antipodean scholars of the ancient world, the ‎nature and ideology of ancient history programs at schools and universities (especially in NSW ‎and at Macquarie), the interaction between biblical and classical disciplines, and the function of ‎history in contemporary Australia. These texts, mostly written by Judge himself throughout his career, appear here with new introductory notes outlining their historical significance for the discipline and Judge's own practice.
