Book The History of France Vol 2 of 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of France Vol 2 of 5 Classic Reprint written by Eyre Evans Crowe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of France, Vol. 2 of 5 It is the mutual tendency of the several classes in a progressive society to consolidate their respective rights, and thus found institutions. Political rights are but the consequence and the guarantee of civil ones, and the mere struggle to obtain the latter leads to the creation of the former. The annals of the reign just narrated, and of the one now entered upon, mark the efforts of the French, and especially Of the Parisian citizens, to guard their property and to acquire power or rights for the purpose of doing so. Unfortunately all such attempts in France were made by each class separately, and even in antagonism with the others; king, nobles, and commons, always at strife and never in unison, carrying on a civil war of class, which in the end proved fatal alike to all. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The definitive cookbook on French cuisine for American readers: "What a cookbook should be: packed with sumptuous recipes, detailed instructions, and precise line drawings. Some of the instructions look daunting, but as Child herself says in the introduction, 'If you can read, you can cook.'" —Entertainment Weekly “I only wish that I had written it myself.” —James Beard Featuring 524 delicious recipes and over 100 instructive illustrations to guide readers every step of the way, Mastering the Art of French Cooking offers something for everyone, from seasoned experts to beginners who love good food and long to reproduce the savory delights of French cuisine. Julia Child, Simone Beck, and Louisette Bertholle break down the classic foods of France into a logical sequence of themes and variations rather than presenting an endless and diffuse catalogue of dishes—from historic Gallic masterpieces to the seemingly artless perfection of a dish of spring-green peas. Throughout, the focus is on key recipes that form the backbone of French cookery and lend themselves to an infinite number of elaborations—bound to increase anyone’s culinary repertoire. “Julia has slowly but surely altered our way of thinking about food. She has taken the fear out of the term ‘haute cuisine.’ She has increased gastronomic awareness a thousandfold by stressing the importance of good foundation and technique, and she has elevated our consciousness to the refined pleasures of dining." —Thomas Keller, The French Laundry

  • Pages : 438 pages

Download or read book History of Venice written by Pietro Bembo and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pietro Bembo (1470–1547), a Venetian nobleman, later a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, was a celebrated Latin stylist and was widely admired for his writings in Italian as well. His early dialogue on the subject of love influenced the development of the literary vernacular, as did his Prose della volgar lingua (1525). From 1513 to 1521 he served Pope Leo X as Latin secretary and became known as the leading advocate of Ciceronian Latin in Europe and of the Tuscan dialect within Italy. He was named official historian of Venice in 1529 and began to compose in Latin his continuation of the city's history in twelve books, covering the years from 1487 to 1513. Although the work chronicles internal politics and events, much of it is devoted to the external affairs of Venice, principally conflicts with other European states (France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, Milan, and the papacy) and with the Turks in the East.
