This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Edward the Third (1327-1377) The history of Edward II I. Is practically that of England for half a century, and embraces that of Scotland France, the Low Countries, and Spain in a more limited degree. The work is, therefore, more than a biography; it is a history of an important and dramatic epoch, as influenced and overshadowed by the extraordinary man who was the motive power of the activity of his age. It is in this spirit that the book was conceived and executed, and while shunning no labour to obtain original informa tion, I have striven to reproduce it in a style in keeping with the dramatic character of the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Edward the Third (1327-1377) In writing this work I have limited myself to the investigation of contemporary evidence. This evidence is composed, primarily, of official documents, and, secondarily, of the chronicles of the period. I shall not attempt to give in this preface a list of the works embraced in this twofold category. I have done so most amply in the footnotes as I went along, and to these I would direct the critical reader. In view of the proofs adduced in these notes of the laborious investigation of sources, I shall be disappointed if the critic does not agree with me that the work may claim to be an independent contribution to the history of Edward III. I think I may hope, at all events, that if he forms an opinion on this matter different from mine, he will not be able to deny me the merit of a conscientious study of the materials bearing on this important period of English history. The history of Edward III. required to be written. The issue, under capable editorship, of the chronicles of the fourteenth century, which has been proceeding during the last fifty years, affords the historian of this period a great advantage over his predecessors in respect of absolutely trustworthy texts. Book The Reign of Edward III

Download or read book The Reign of Edward III written by W. M. Ormrod and published by Tempus Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard history of one of the most important medieval kings of England. The fifty-year reign of one of England's most charismatic leaders is rehabilitated in this lucid and incisive work. W.M. Ormrod traces Edward's life from his birth, when the very future of the monarchy in England was under threat, to his death when he was regarded throughout Europe as the very model of an ideal monarch. A revealing insight into the nature of Edward's relations and dealings with his subjects shows how the king was able to cultivate this image; political acumen and elaborate propaganda won the loyalty of his realm. The image of the chivalric court was inspirational in leading England through the trauma of the Hundred Years War, bitter clashes with Scotland and the arrival of the Black Death, which wiped out a third of the population. The grandeur motivated the forces of Edward and the Black Prince to famous victories over the French at Crécy and Poitiers, remembered to this day, and prompted Edward to claim the French throne. As the wealthiest monarch in Europe the king was able to finance his ambitions and foster a culture in which the likes of Geoffrey Chaucer were able to flourish.

Book Edward III The Perfect King

Download or read book Edward III The Perfect King written by Ian Mortimer and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2014-02-22 with total page 999 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the brutal, brilliant fourteenth-century ruler, by the bestselling author of The Time Traveler’s Guide to Medieval England. Holding power for over fifty years starting in 1327, Edward III was one of England’s most influential kings—and one who shaped the course of English history. Revered as one of the country’s most illustrious leaders for centuries, he was also a usurper and a warmonger who ordered his uncle beheaded. A brutal man, to be sure, but a brilliant one. Noted historian Ian Mortimer offers the first comprehensive look at the life of Edward III. The Perfect King was often the instigator of his own drama, but he also overthrew tyrannous guardians as a teenager and ushered in a period of chivalric ideals. Mortimer traces how Edward’s reforms made feudal England a thriving, sophisticated country and one of Europe’s major military powers. Ideal for anyone fascinated by medieval history, this lively book provides new insight into Edward III’s lasting influence on the justice system, artistic traditions, language, and architecture of the country. “The most remarkable medieval historian of our time.” —The Times (London)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Edward the Black Prince: With Map and Plans He can hardly have borne to look back upon his own youth, with its shameful memories. He had seen his father, Edward II., by his dissipated life and his slavish devotion to his favourites, alienate the affection of his subjects, and provoke the Barons to rise against him. Then, when peace had for awhile been restored, he had gone with his mother to France. He had seen her refuse to return to England at the King's demand; he had watched the growth of the disgraceful intimacy between her and Roger Mortimer, one of the rebel earls. At last, a powerless instrument in their hands, he had been taken by her and Mortimer to invade England, and Edward Il.'s throne was attacked and overthrown by his own wife and son.
