Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Education in Delaware The genesis of education in Delaware must be sought amidst the struggles of the Swedes, the Dutch, and the English for the banks of the Delaware. TO separate the earliest educational history of the colo nies which emerged from this con ict is almost a hopeless task, for they were at first much alike in customs and in government. Colonists devoted to the reclamation of the forest primeval and to the mainte nance of the struggle for existence seldom give thought to schools. But the early settlers of Delaware, from the first, made praiseworthy attempts to instruct their children in the rudiments of common learn ing and Christian theology. This they did because they came from Sweden and Holland, at that time the farthest advanced in general education of all the countries Of Europe. Book A History of Education in Pennsylvania

Download or read book A History of Education in Pennsylvania written by James Pyle Wickersham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Education in Pennsylvania: Private and Public, Elementary and Higher, From the Time the Swedes Settled on the Delaware to the Present Day The present History was begun many years ago, and has cost a vast amount of labor. That it is correct in all its details, covering as they do a history of two hundred and fifty years, is not to be expected, the sins of omission in particular must be numerous, and some of them may appear inexcusable; but it is believed that the narrative presents, as a whole, a fair picture of what has been done in Pennsylvania to educate the people. At least an honest, patient effort has been made to accomplish that end. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Once Upon a Time in Delaware Classic Reprint

Download or read book Once Upon a Time in Delaware Classic Reprint written by Katharine Pyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Once Upon a Time in Delaware This book is published by the Delaware Society of the Colonial Dames of America for the use, primarily, of the children of Delaware, in school and out. Its style and matter are therefor chosen to suit young readers. Many historical points in these stories are more or less disputed. The original sources do not always agree. In preparing these stories of Delaware for children's reading, it has been thought best to use anecdotes and interesting traditions whenever they could be found. The result is a substantially true set of stories, which do not however, undertake to settle the facts in any disputed case, but are designed to leave in a child's mind the broad outlines of Delaware history. The stories have all been read and revised by the Hon. Alexander B. Cooper of New Castle, to whom the thanks of the Colonial Dames are here expressed for his wise and constant help. The Rev. Joseph B. Turner, of Dover, has also kindly read over several of the stories. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fifty Years of Delaware College 1870 1920 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fifty Years of Delaware College 1870 1920 Classic Reprint written by Edward Noble Vallandigham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years of Delaware College, 1870-1920 Newark of the period during which the college was closed, and for many years after, was a small and rather inactive village, strung for the better part of a mile along the highway leading southwest ward to Baltimore, northeastward to Wilmington and Philadelphia, Main Street, a thoroughfare deep adust all Summer, mired in mud all Winter, when not frozen into granite-like ruts, or mercifully cov ered with the assoiling charity of snow. The campus, then, as now, was a deliciously green oasis, rich in noble trees, and especially distinguished by the double row of European lindens, leading up to the dignified front of Old College. A revolving turnstile, replaced in the early seventies by a double flight, of substantial steps, gave entrance to the campus from Main Street. So long as the activities of Delaware College were suspended, The Ora tory, as Old College was then called served the community for many public purposes. If Signor Blitz, the famous prestidigitateur of two genera tions ago, came to town, the Swiss Bellringers arrived, or a solemn lecturer brought enlightenment as to Siam or Bourioboulagha, the performance of the evening was given in the Oratory. Those were times of the simple life, and our good townsfolk were easily amused. Several rooms of Old Collegewere at one time occupied by a private school, and, in the late sixties, while the new Presbyterian Church was building, the congregation for many months worshipped in the Oratory, thus putting it to a use justified by its popular but probably oft misinterpreted name. Political parties often held their meetings on the campus, and Professor E. D. Porter, Principal of Newark Academy, usually gave there an exhibition of fireworks in celebration of Independence Day. Book Agricultural Education in Delaware

Download or read book Agricultural Education in Delaware written by Harry Hayward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Education in Delaware: An Address Before the Agricultural Conference, December 19th, 1906 It has long been recognized that agriculture is the basis of our national wealth. Without it, neither mining, lumbering, manufacturing nor any other industry could live. Agriculture was the first industry of mankind, and, as long as the earth is inhabited, it will engage the energies of a large proportion of the human race. It is because agriculture is the great fundamental industry that it has commanded the consideration of the greatest statesmen from the earliest ages down to the present time. In recent years, the United States has made the most rapid advancement in agri cultural developments, and we, as a nation, are justly proud of our achievements in this direction. Book A Short History of Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of Education Classic Reprint written by Oscar Browning and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Education It is possible that in some grades of schoolwork a purely mechanical teaching is best; that he is the best teacher who is most of an artisan, - with whom teaching is most of a handicraft. But I do not be lieve this. The rules that are best for working on wood and stone are not the best when applied to mind and character. Undoubtedly, there is a me chamical element in the teaching art; but this is sub ordinate to that other element that wholly escapes mechanical measurements, because it has to do with the manifestations of free Spirit. In other words, I am persuaded that a teacher is poor to the degree in which he is an artisan, and good to the degree in which he is an artist; and that nothing is so much needed by teachers of every class as an infusion of that freedom and versatility that are possible only through an extension of the mental vision by means of a more liberal culture. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches From the History of Education It will be remembered that Luther placed a high estimate on individual conscience as the ulti mate arbiter of the actions of men, and on the consequent desirability of seeing with one's own eyes rather than with the eyes of others. This led him of necessity to the need of training the intellect and the will in order that they might serve conscience aright both in err abling it to see clearly the ways and means and in securing obedi ence to its decisions. Hence the high estimate placed by him on education as the chief and primary concern of the home, the church and the state.
