Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of the Laws and Canons of the Church of England, From Its First Foundation to the Conquest, and From the Conquest to the Reign of King Henry VIII, Vol. 1 of 2: Translated Into English With Explanatory Notes Mr. Johnson's translation of English Canons, &c., of which the first and only previous edition was published ad. 1720, is mainly founded upon the Concilia of Sir Henry Spelman, who had formed a plan for collecting all the Ecclesiastical councils, decrees, laws and constitutions of the British Isles in three periods, namely, from the first introduction of Chris tianity to the Norman Conquest from the Conquest to the Reformation; and lastly from the Reformation to his own time. The first part of the intended work, completed amid the greatest difficulties, of which the almost universal ignorance of the anglo-saxon tongue was even greater than the troubles of the times, was published ad. 1639; and the second ad. 1664, by his nephew after the author's decease, which event prevented the execution of the third parta. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 1158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical Law of the Church of England, Vol. 1 of 2 The last edition of Dr. Burn's Ecclesiastical Law was edited by me in 1842. Since that period many and important alterations have been made in that law. The present Treatise incorporates considerable portions of Dr. Burn's Work, but it is framed upon a totally different model, and, while it contains a very large portion of entirely new matter, omits those subjects over which the Ecclesiastical Courts have ceased to exercise jurisdiction. The dictionary form adopted by Dr. Burn, how ever superficially convenient, appears to me fatal to any attempt to produce the law in the form of a system arranged according to the principles of science. Book A Guide to the Laws of England Affecting Roman Catholics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Guide to the Laws of England Affecting Roman Catholics Classic Reprint written by Thomas Chisholme Anstey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Laws of England Affecting Roman Catholics IN offering this Treatise to the notice of the Profession, the Author feels himself called upon to say a few words in explanation. He is far from imagining himself very competent to discharge the task he has attempted. Yet, when he considers that up to the present day there has appeared not a single work on this not unimportant sub ject, he ventures to hope that even this compilation may be found of service. It was the want under which he personally laboured of the means of informing himself upon the present state of the law relating to the Roman Catholic body in Britain and its colonies, that first led the Author to undertake, for his own benefit, those inquiries, the results of which he now presumes to lay before the public. In doing so, he is quite conscious of the many imperfections which are very likely to abound in a work of the first impression. But if he shall have succeeded in facilitating the further researches of more able and learned inquirers than himself, and of clearing their path of some of those embarrassments which he has found upon his own, the Author's success will have been quite equal to his expectations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Collection of the Laws and Canons of the Church of England, From Its First Foundation to the Conquest, and From the Conquest to the Reign of King Henry VIII, Vol. 2 of 2: Translated Into English, With Explanatory Notes IN this, as in the former volume, much care has been taken to reprint faith'fully the text of J ohnson's translation of the canons, &c., and his notes upon them, all corrections and additions being made by marginal and foot notes within brackets. The corrections however of verbal errors, sup plied from the addenda of the first edition, are not so marked. Johnson's notes are referred to, as in the first edition, 'by letters of the alphabet, and those of the editor by asterisks, &c.; the latter series of note marks are in both volumes frequently accompanied by an accent to shew how much of Johnson's translation is to be compared with the original quoted in the editor's note. The translations of the second volume are all from Latin documents, and they have been compared throughout with the Concilia of Wilkins as containing the best text of the originals, but other texts are sometimes quoted to shew how far particular parts of J ohn son's translation are warranted by his own authorities.
