The last instrument "was a sort of chair, placed at the end of a plank, in which the offender was placed, and ducked. It was formerly made use of to punish bakers and brewers, upon transgressing the laws made in relation to their several trades; for upon offending in this respect they were ducked, or plunged into some stinking or muddy pond, by means of this chair." One such ordeal, we should think, effected a lasting cure in the unfortunate individual. The inhabitants of the parish indulged in the various amusements common to that age, such as bull-baiting, cock-fighting, bowls, tennis, and the like; and the expenses of several of them were paid out of the parish funds: --1582, " To Roberte Babbes wiffe of Leweton in parte paymente for curinge ofwilliam Burnetts hedde, 2s." 1594, "Pd to one man that played with a pyck at the younge mens ale by consent, 2s." 1607, " To Stoning for mending the Bull ring, 2s." "To Mr Putt for the bowling greene due Feb: the 2., 7s. 6d." It appears that the parishioners sometimes engaged in games which were not lawful: --1585, "Payd to Mr Wichalse for that some of the Pshe did use unlawfull games, 4s. 6d." There are several other items in the records which would be most interesting, as shewing the manners and customs of the inhabitants of Chudleigh, but a few must suffice for the present chapter: --D 1568, "Payd for wrytinge of yB bookes for yor lotterye at ii Sevrall tymes & for wrytinge of yor prosesse, 4d." 1572, "Item, to be allowed for the Dett of or old Vicar for y he owed uppon my Lady Courtnays & Mr Rychard Wytchalses accompt, 3s. 4d." 1584, "Pd to Owin Thomas for goinge to Kingsbridge to espie the behaviour of a poore woman which was kepte there in warde, 2s." 1594, " Paide to John Guve paver for 684 yearde of pavement...
