Book The History of Chemistry

Book excerpt: "The History of Chemistry" spans a period from very old times to the modern era. Since several millennia BC, civilizations were using technologies that would eventually form the basis of the various branches of chemistry. Chemistry was preceded by its protoscience, alchemy, which is an intuitive but non-scientific approach to understanding the constituents of matter and their interactions. It was unsuccessful in explaining the nature of matter and its transformations, but, by performing experiments and recording the results, alchemists set the stage for modern chemistry. While both alchemy and chemistry are concerned with matter and its transformations, the crucial difference was given by the scientific method that chemists employed in their work. Chemistry is considered to have become an established science with the work of Antoine Lavoisier, who developed a law of conservation of mass that demanded careful measurement and quantitative observations of chemical phenomena. The object of this work is to present a comprehensive overview of the progress of chemistry, from its first rude and modest beginnings till it has reached its modern state of importance as one of the leading sciences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 It is natural to feel a desire to be acquainted with the origin and the progress of such a science; and to know something of the history and character of those numerous votaries to whom it is indebted for its pro gress and improvement. The object of this little Work is to gratify these laudable wishes, by taking a rapid View of the progress of Chemistry, from its first rude and disgraceful beginnings till it has reached its pre sent state of importance and dignity. I shall divide the subject into fifteen chapters. In'the first I shall treat of Alchymy, which may be considered as the in auspicious commencement of the science, and which, in fact, consists of little else than an account of dupes and impostors; every where so full of fiction and oh scurity, that it is a hopeless and almost impossible task to reach the truth. In the second Chapter I shall endeavour to point out the few small chemical rills, which were known to the ancients. These I shall fol low in their progress, in the succeeding chapters, till at last, augmented by an infinite number of streams owing at once from a thousand different quarters, they have swelled to the mighty river, which now ows ou majestically, wafting wealth and information to the civilized world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Chemistry, Vol. 2 of 2 His Writings were exceedingly numerous, and treated of science, theology, metaphysics, and politics. Of his theological, metaphysical, and political writings it is not our business in this work to take any notice. His scientific works treat of electricity, optics, and chemistry. As an electrician he was respectable; as an Optician, a compiler; as a chemist, a discoverer. He wrote also a book on perspective which I have never had an opportunity of perusing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Chemistry The first edition of this book appeared in 1894. While it has passed through a number of editions since, there has been no attempt to bring it up to date nor to revise it in any way, and although there has been much to preoccupy me, especially in other lines Of work, I recognize the fact that there has been no excuse for such neglect. It has now been entirely rewritten on a changed plan of arrangement and made to cover the great progress in the science which has taken place since it first appeared. Some material considered unnecessary has been eliminated so that it might be kept within the same compass that has proved so convenient for those who could not devote to the subject the time required by the larger treatises. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Chemistry, Vol. 1 of 2 Decommsition of this kind is termed 'drydistillaticn' because, asindistillation, the substance is heated and vapours are given oil which, on cooling, condemns into liquids. In general. Decomposition, in absorbing heat, presents much in common to a physical change of state - such as, for example, that of a liquid into a gas. Deville likened complete decomposition to boiling, and compared partial decomposition, when a portion of a substance is not decomposed in the presence of its products of decomposition (or dissociation), to evaporation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Chemistry This volume is the outgrowth of a series of talks which the author has for several years given to his students at the Institute of Technology, the hearers being members of the senior class specializing in chemistry, and hence familiar with its more impor tant facts and principles. The lectures have dealt in a direct informal way with the fundamental ideas of the science: their origin, their philosophical basis, the critical periods in their development, and the personalities of the great men whose efforts have contributed to that development. Cles of bodies, which brings them into intimate and per manent union. From its exertion between particles of a similar nature, arise -the forms under which bodies exist, and many of the physical qualities of which they are pos sessed. And from its exertion between particles of differ ent kinds, are derived the greater number of substances which compose our globe, - these consisting of certain ele ments retained by this power in a state of combination. Book Historical Introduction to Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Introduction to Chemistry Classic Reprint written by T. Martin Lowry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Introduction to Chemistry IN the preparation of this volume the purpose has been to present an historical account of the more important facts and theories of chemistry, as these disclosed themselves to the original workers in this branch of science. No attempt has been made to write a formal History of Chemistry, either as a survey of the various periods into which the history of the science may be divided, or in the more usual biographical form. The material has been classified by subjects rather than by authors; but it will be found that under this system the work of individual experimenters is described quite as fully as in a biographical survey, whilst in the case of certain chemists, such as Priestley, Lavoisier and gay-lussac, it has been possible to include detailed descriptions of experimental work which could scarcely have found a place in a brief biography. The Biographical Index provides a key to the work of each author as it is described in the text, and contains most of the essential items for an account in narrative form of the achievements of the great pioneers of chemistry. Download or read book An Attempt to Establish Vol 1 of 2 written by Thomas Thomson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Attempt to Establish, Vol. 1 of 2: The First Principles of Chemistry I have been induced to lay the result of my investigations before the public, chiefly for two reasons, with which I think it requisite to acquaint you. The first of these is, the great advantage which medical practitioners will derive from a knowledge of the atomic weights of bodies, and of the weights of the integrant particles of the salts, &c., which they have occasion to employ in their prescriptions. This knowledge will be easily acquired by a perusal of the following pages; and it will enable those who possess it to avoid some very awkward blunders, into which I have observed too many practitioners, even of considerable celebrity, frequently to fall, to the no little inconvenience of their patients. Indeed, till the atomic theory was pretty completely investigated, even chemists themselves were not exempt from such mistakes; and I could point out, if I thought proper, some remarkable examples of men who would take it amiss if the world did not give them credit for possessing much chemical science, falling into mistakes that no student of mine, who took the trouble to follow and understand the lectures delivered on chemistry in the College of Glasgow, would run any hazard of committing.
