Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the multidisciplinary nature of our object of study, sustainability, we have divided this book into twelve chapters. In the first four, we cover the content required to learn how to start a business and create companies based on sustainability. The following chapters provide guidance to help translate sustainability strategies across cultures. These processes are analyzed through the Triple Bottom Line perspective, which effectively describes the primary objectives of sustainability. The last chapters analyze current trends in sustainable development, framing education as a powerful tool to facilitate the transition to more sustainable forms of development. Through these chapters, the understanding of the theoretical concepts is facilitated and examples of sustainable enterprises are made available to the reader that serves as a reference and that allow the development of practical activities.

Download or read book Dangerous Mediations written by Áine Mangaoang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, an unlikely troupe of 1500 Filipino prisoners became Internet celebrities after their YouTube video of Michael Jackson's ground-breaking hit 'Thriller' went viral. Taking this spectacular dance as a point of departure, Dangerous Mediations explores the disquieting development of prisoners performing punishment to a global, online audience. Combining analysis of this YouTube video with first-hand experiences from fieldwork in the Philippine prison, Áine Mangaoang investigates a wide range of interlocking contexts surrounding this user-generated text to reveal how places of punishment can be transformed into spaces of spectacular entertainment, leisure, and penal tourism. In the post-YouTube era, Dangerous Mediations sounds the call for close readings of music videos produced outside of the corporate culture industries. By connecting historical discussions on postcolonialism, surveillance and prison philosophy with contemporary scholarship on popular music, participatory culture and new media, Dangerous Mediations is the first book to ask critical questions about the politics of pop music and audiovisual mediation in early 21st-century detention centres.

The original inhabitants came from various parts of Southeast Asia, and outlying areas preserve many of their unique and interesting customs. In the age of exploration the Europeans came. The hopes of the Filipino people were finally realized when, on July 4 1946, the flag of the Philippine was raised. Author, Galdys Zabilka has created an informal and interesting compilation for the overseas traveler or the armchair tourist. The reader will be introduced to quaint Filipino customs, tourist attractions, folk songs, foods, and sports along with a general review of Philippine history and racial background. Almost every aspect of Filipino life is touched upon in this handy little volume. Delightful illustrations for each chapter were done by M. Kuwata. Musical scores of several Philippine folk songs are included in the last chapter.

Download or read book United States Army in WWII the Pacific Triumph in the Philippines written by Robert Ross Smith and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 1293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Includes 16 charts, 54 maps and 196 illustrations] Triumph in the Philippines is the story of the largest joint campaign of the Pacific phase of World War II. Devoted principally to the accomplishments of U.S. Army ground combat forces and to the operations of major organized Philippine guerrilla units that contributed notably to the success of the campaign, the volume describes the reconquest of the Philippine archipelago exclusive of Leyte and Samar. The narrative includes coverage of air, naval, and logistical activity necessary to broad understanding of the ground combat operations. The strategic planning and the strategic debates leading to the decision to seize Luzon and bypass Formosa are also treated so as to enable the reader to fit the Luzon and Southern Philippines Campaigns into their proper perspective of the war against Japan. For the forces of General MacArthur’s Southwest Pacific Area the reconquest of Luzon and the Southern Philippines was the climax of the Pacific war, although no one anticipated this outcome when, on 9 January 1945, Lt. Gen. Walter Krueger’s Sixth Army poured ashore over the beaches of Lingayen Gulf. Viewed from the aspect of commitment of U.S. Army ground forces, the Luzon Campaign (which strategically and tactically in-chides the seizure of Mindoro Island and the securing of the shipping lanes through the central Visayan Islands) was exceeded in size during World War II only by the drive across northern France. The Luzon Campaign differed from others of the Pacific war in that it alone provided opportunity for the employment of mass and maneuver on a scale even approaching that common to the European and Mediterranean theaters. The operations of Lt. Gen. Robert L. Eichelberger’s Eighth Army, both on Luzon and during the Southern Philippines Campaign, were more akin to previous actions throughout the Pacific, but the southern campaign, too, presented features peculiar to the reconquest of the Philippine archipelago.

Download or read book Body Movement and Culture written by Sally Ann Ness and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Body, Movement, and Culture, Sally Ann Ness provides an original interpretive account of three forms of sinulog dancing practiced in Cebu City in the Philippines: a healing ritual, a dance drama, and a "cultural" exhibition dance. Ness's examination of these dance forms yields rich insights into the cultural predicament of this Philippine city and the way in which kinesthetic and visual symbols interact to create meaning. Ness scrutinizes the patterns of movement, the use of the body and of objects, and the shaping of space common to all three versions of the sinulog. She then relates these elements to the fundamental ways the culture bearers of Cebu City experience their world. For example, she shows how each of the dance forms functions to reinforce class distinctions and to establish a code of authenticated "cultural" action. At the same time, Ness demonstrates, the dances manifest and actualize widely applied notions about the nature of "devotion," "sincerity," "naturalness," and "beauty." Throughout the text, Ness provides a close analysis of movement that is all too often missing from anthropological studies of dance. Most significantly, she works to relate the movements used in dance to everyday movement and to interpret the attitudes and values that are embodied in both choreographed and quotidian movement. Important and illuminating, Body, Movement, and Culture is of particular interest to students and scholars of anthropology, folklore, dance, and Asian studies.

Download or read book Tagtaginep My Dream of Opportunity written by Roddy Espiritu and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains my impressions and perspectives of the Philippines, the United States, and the world for that matter, of my life struggles and dream of opportunity. It's intended as a guidebook for regular and ordinary life both in the Philippines and in the United States depending on your inclinations, abilities, income and economic status. Consider this as a report from my own listening post. It contains actual interviews with people and excerpts from newspapers, magazines, books and the Internet. My intention was to depict my own personal life and my family s, and write about my own story based upon personal experiences, but also to describe certain mores, attitudes, customs and cultures of various people in Philippine and American society as I see or interpret them, trying not to offend or annoy. My observations may not jibe with some people's cultural make-up, political conviction, religious beliefs, personal experience, sensitivity and interpretation of certain issues and things, but such is life. I know that no matter where I stand and wherever I go, it's always my opinion against any others, and I have lots of opinions that can cause obvious negative reactions in the simplest of minds. The world is full of cuckoos and we even admire some of them depending on who you ask. When it comes to some very burning questions, the first casualty is truth since there's a big difference between knowing the real story and the story we're told. The historical events and lore that I have used as backdrop are based upon factual records and are of common knowledge in the Philippines and in the United States, but people inject their own spin, opinion, hypocrisy, dogma, self-righteousness, politics, pandering, feeling, insight and experience into certain circumstances, as I did. I have tried to be as truthful and transparent as possible in my own light. You can scoff at me but I have no political agenda and I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I am just that I am. I'm not rewriting history but trying to give history its true light and history is fickle. In my defense I quote the philosopher Voltaire "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it". I also have to show my credentials as Filipino so as to be able to tell Filipino jokes and not get in trouble, in consideration that this is my swan song. I have lived in these United States since 1968, been drafted to the conflict in Vietnam, worked long and hard in my profession, have family, traveled far, now retired, and have seen so much of the American society that I almost think of myself as a native. On this note I beg for tolerance.
