Download or read book Boston in Transit written by Steven Beaucher and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly illustrated story of public transit in one of America’s most historic cities, from public ferry and horse-drawn carriage to the MBTA. A lively tour of public transportation in Boston over the years, Boston in Transit maps the complete history of the modes of transportation that have kept the city moving and expanding since its founding in 1630—from the simple ferry serving an English settlement to the expansive network of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, or MBTA. The story of public transit in Boston—once dubbed the Hub of the Universe—is a journey through the history of the American metropolis. With a remarkable collection of maps and architectural and engineering drawings at hand, Steven Beaucher launches his account from the landing where English colonists established that first ferry, carrying passengers between what is now Boston’s North End and Charlestown—and sparing them what had been a two-day walk around Boston Harbor. In the 1700s, horse-drawn coaches appeared on the scene, connecting Boston and Cambridge, with the bigger, better Omnibus soon to follow. From horse-drawn coaches, horse-drawn railways evolved, making way for the electric streetcar networks that allowed the city’s early suburbs to sprout—culminating in the multimodal, regional public transportation network in place in Boston today. With photographs, brochures, pamphlets, guidebooks, timetables, and tickets, Boston in Transit creates a complete picture of the everyday experience of public transportation through the centuries. At once a practical reference, local history, and travelogue, this book will be cherished by armchair tourists, day-trippers, and serious travelers alike.

Book Hounds of the Road

Download or read book Hounds of the Road written by Carlton Jackson and published by Popular Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bus system that came to be known as the Greyhound Bus Company was founded by Carl Eric Wickman, an enterprising Swede of Hibbing, Minnesota. The first bus was a seven-passenger Hupmobile touring car that was used to transport miners across the Mesaba Iron Range to and from work. Wickman was soon joined by another Swede, Andrew Anderson, and they began operating in earnest the route from a saloon in Hibbing to the fire-hall in Alice. From this lowly beginning grew the Greyhound Corporation, a multi-million dollar company which, through the years, has owned everything from a chain of hamburger restaurants to a soap company.

Book British Buses of the 1980s

Download or read book British Buses of the 1980s written by John Law and published by . This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1980s were some of the most tumultuous years for the British bus industry. The Thatcher Government, in power throughout the decade, brought about privatization of the National Bus Company and the Scottish Bus Group. In addition, 1986 saw the introduction of full deregulation of bus services with the exception of London. Do not think that London was unaffected by these changes, however, as the omnibus operations of London Transport was split up and then sold into private hands. Deregulation meant competition and 'bus wars' broke out in many parts of the country, sometimes in the most unexpected of places. However, towards the end of the decade, larger groups emerged such as Stagecoach. The author was fortunate enough to be able to capture the scene on color film through the decade and the best of his results are seen in British Buses of the 1980s, a magnificent record of some challenging and ultimately pivotal times.

Book British Buses 1967

Download or read book British Buses 1967 written by Jim Blake and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-08-30 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at an important turning point in the history of the bus industry in Britain. 1967 was the penultimate year to the end of an era, when private and semi-nationalized company's operated the bus networks in this country. After 1967 the network was never the same again, with the formation of the National Bus Company in 1968.The NBC was a very bland organization compared to the colourful bus companies that had existed before nationalization, and many small municipal fleets amalgamated to form Passenger Transport Executives. This comprehensive volume covers a large number of the bus companies throughout the country in 1967 and also has a good readable narrative describing Jim Blake's journeys travelling on these services across Britain.
