This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church The history of Bethel Evangelical Lutheran Church is the history of people. It is a look at their faith, their failings, their strengths, and their weak nesses. It is the story of continual striving for a better religious life. It is the story of logs, frame planks, brick and metal. It is the story of shared religious homes, of burned churches, of meeting in homes, of self-sufficiency, and of a new Church. The history of Bethel is the story of Sunday Schools, Bible Schools, Children's Day, organs, and pianos. It is the story of synod ical breaks and synodical unions. But more than any thing else the history of Bethel Church is the story of its people. Ed Harmon characterized Bethel Church thusly: My daddy always said, the best people in the world are at Bethel, ' and they still are. 1 Ed Harmon is a life-long member of Bethel whose roots run deep. He recalled two world wars, synod changes different pastors and various lay leadership. But for Ed Harmon the factor which remains constant is the people of Bethel Church. Book A History of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States Classic Reprint written by Henry Eyster Jacobs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States IF the principle be correct that the biography of a man cannot be properly written Without tracing his ancestry and examining the influences that have contributed, long before his birth, to the formation of his character, it is no less true that the past history and the present condition Of the various Christian denominations of America cannot be rightly understood unless we recur to their sources in Europe and analyze the individual factors that have eu tered into their life before they reached this country. AS no communion can be absolutely sundered from its past history, the historical standpoint must always be the basis of all enduring practical work. We cannot deal success fully with men unless we know who they are, and whence they came, and What they mean. The historical ante cedents and relations and development must be appreciated and recognized before any results can be expected from the kindly feeling and earnest efforts of even the warmest advocates of Christian union. A candid and discriminating View of its precise historical situation on the part Of those upon Whom rests the responsibility for leadership is an indispensable prerequisite to all progress Within a Church. Even where there are the best Of reasons for abandoning, in some directions, the past development, it must be done intelligently, or far more may be lost than is gained. The Lutheran Church in America cannot be understood, there fore, without an acquaintance with the Lutheran Church in the centers from which it has originated. The history Of the Lutheran Church in America actually begins with the Reformation. Lutheranism is a specific form of Christian life. The propriety Of the name as a designation of that form Of life is not for us to determine. Apart from our willingness or unwillingness to assume it, it has become a fixed term for a definite and well-known object. AS religion is not mere intellectualism, or mere sentiment, or mere activity, SO Lutheranism, as a form of the only true religion, Christian ity, is far more than a system of doctrines, or a mode Of worship, or a form of Church organization. The Spirit Of a church is always greater and deeper than its expression; its faith is always greater than its confession. Lutheran ism is a mode Of viewing and receiving and living the truths of Christianity; or rather of viewing and receiving and living in mystical union with Him Who is the begin ning and end of all these truths. The peculiarities which mark its relation to Christ determine peculiarities With respect to other Objects. The principles underlying the doctrinal position reappear in the Spheres Of ethics and liturgics, of homiletics and church government. Even the faith Of a great sculptor or a great musical composer will express itself in a different way according to the peculiar ities of the confession by which his religious life has been nourished and trained. Everything that enters into the religious life, or that proceeds from it, is molded and C01 ored by the specific form which that life assumes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Gilead Evangelical Lutheran Church, Centre Brunswick, Rensselaer Co;, N. Y. And the Vicinity In the year 1876 the writer, then pastor of Gilead Luth eran Church, Centre Brunswick, N. Y., was requested to prepare an historical address, as at that time it was sup posed the said church was exactly one hundred years old. This he undertook to do, delivering two addresses of the kind. These however did not cover half the age of the church. He then suggested the propriety of making an effort to collect everything that could be found relating to the church and neighborhood, and writing a history to be preserved in manuscript by the church, and forwarding a copy of the same to the Historical Society at Gettysburg, Pa. Soon afterwards, at an annual congregational meet ing it was resolved it should be published when completed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Bethel Baptist Church: Pictorial History, 1848-1973; 125th Anniversary As the general editor of this volume, I have sought to preserve as much of the individual style of expression used by the writers as possible. It has been my aim to deal fairly with all of the families of the church, to give credit where credit was due, and to omit no mention or contribution known to me. In the event that these objectives have not been met with regard to some person or family, I now tender regret and sincere apologies. Neither word nor picture can capture the remarkable character of the people who are New Bethel Baptist Church. We may justly say. With the Psalmist: The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; yea, I have agoodly heritage. (ps. It is the earnest prayer of this pastor's heart that as they have met the Opportunities of the past in the strength of the Lord and thus have made for this generation a goodly heritage, so may the present fellowship of believers take up the challenge of the present time and continue to build a great heritage for generations yet unborn. With the Psalmist let us say: He brought me forth into a broad place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Lutheran Church and the Civil War Classic Reprint written by Charles William Heathcote and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lutheran Church and the Civil War The religious life of peoples and the interplay between religious forces and political and eco nomic forces has too little concerned students of modern history. When church and state were one, when religious differences fostered wars, both national and civil, when the state was free ing itself from the church and the church from the state, religion was politics and the two were often inseparable. But here, in America, where every man may worship God as he wills and the church flourishes independently of the state, we are too apt to overlook the fact that the church exercises an influence on the people, even in matters seemingly political or economic only, more potent by far than is generally appreciated or, ofttimes, even known to any but the most conscious observers. It is with the relation to each other of the Lutheran church and slavery that our author here deals and his study, it is hoped, is the forerunner of many other like con tributions to our national history.
