Book Hindu Revivalism in Bengal 1872 1905

Download or read book Hindu Revivalism in Bengal 1872 1905 written by Amiya P. Sen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is an intensive study of certain facets of social and intellectual life in Bengal between 1872 and 1905, particularly Hindu revivalism. The period under discussion represents significant progress in the area of social and religious reform as well as a period which witnessed hostile attitudes towards such reforms. This is probably the first major work concerning the controversy that surrounded the Brahmo Marriage Bill of 1868–72 and the Consent Bill of 1890–92. The major source material for this book comprises contemporary Bengali literature, including essays, newspaper articles and correspondence, novels, short stories, drama, and poetry. Though this study purports to be a history of intellectual life in Bengal and the broader intellectual trends and movements, it is largely an examination of certain developments centred in or around Calcutta.

Other chapters treat understudied topics such as the Anglo-Cherokee campaigns, Sweden’s participation, Ottoman neutrality, the Vatican, European perceptions of Cossacks and Kalmyks, the Enlightenment and the war, the choosing of sides in Europe and North America, social and political aspects of French and British military life, operational reconnaissance, and the war’s complex ending in western Germany. Book The Changing World of Caste and Hierarchy in Bengal

Download or read book The Changing World of Caste and Hierarchy in Bengal written by Sudarshana Bhaumik and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-26 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the prevalent assumptions of caste, hierarchy and social mobility in pre-colonial and colonial Bengal. It studies the writings of colonial ethnographers, Orientalist scholars, Christian missionaries and pre-colonial literary texts like the Mangalkavyas to show how the concept of caste emerged and argues that the jati order in Bengal was far from being a rigidly reified structure, but one which had room for spatial and social mobility. The volume highlights the processes through which popular myths and beliefs of the lower caste orders of Bengal were Sanskritized. It delineates the linkages between sedantized peasant culture and the emergence of new agricultural castes in colonial Bengal. Moreover, the author discusses a wide spectrum of issues like marginality and hierarchy, the spread of Brahmanical hegemony, the creation of deities and the process of Sanskritization, popular Saivism, the cult of Manasa in Bengal and the revolt of 1857 and the caste question. Rich in archival sources, this book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of colonial history, Indian history, political sociology, caste studies, exclusion studies, cultural studies, social history, cultural history and South Asian studies, especially those interested in undivided Bengal.

The sole aim of this sacred book is to ignite young minds to turn their dreams into determination for national growth and development through personal skill and capacity development. This book highlights India’s rich and glorious history, culture, trade & commerce, politics, geography, demography, and economy on one hand, and religion, spirituality, philosophy, gender, education, health, climate action, and science & technology, on the other hand. What are India’s present strengths? What more India can learn from the USA, China, Japan, Germany, and Israel has been discussed in this book. Also, the author has explored the perceptions of some great social, political, and spiritual leaders of the world about India and its superiority in science, technology, mathematics, spirituality, culture, and beauty. Moreover, India’s vibrant foreign policy and robust public policies since independence with a special focus on the Modi Government have been examined minutely. The most significant parts of this volume are to tell the readers about how India can be a developed country, how India should run in the next quarter century, and how India can achieve a $25 trillion economy by 2047. Finally, this book traces out some existing challenges and concludes with reasonable and scientific recommendations for the holistic development of India.
