Download or read book Sovereign of the Market written by Jeffrey Sklansky and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-11-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What should serve as money, who should control its creation and circulation, and according to what rules? For more than two hundred years, the “money question” shaped American social thought, becoming a central subject of political debate and class conflict. Sovereign of the Market reveals how and why this happened. Jeffrey Sklansky’s wide-ranging study comprises three chronological parts devoted to major episodes in the career of the money question. First, the fight over the innovation of paper money in colonial New England. Second, the battle over the development of commercial banking in the new United States. And third, the struggle over the national banking system and the international gold standard in the late nineteenth century. Each section explores a broader problem of power that framed each conflict in successive phases of capitalist development: circulation, representation, and association. The three parts also encompass intellectual biographies of opposing reformers for each period, shedding new light on the connections between economic thought and other aspects of early American culture. The result is a fascinating, insightful, and deeply considered contribution to the history of capitalism.
Download or read book The Second Bank of the United States written by Jane Ellen Knodell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2016 marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Second Bank of the United States (1816-1836). This book is an economic history of an early central bank, the Second Bank of the United States (1816-36). After US President Andrew Jackson vetoed the re-chartering of the Bank in 1832, the US would go without a central bank for the rest of the nineteenth century, unlike Europe and England. This book takes a fresh look at the role and legacy of the Second Bank. The Second Bank of the United States shows how the Bank developed a business model that allowed it to make a competitive profit while providing integrating fiscal services to the national government for free. The model revolved around the strategic use of its unique ability to establish a nationwide system of branches. This book shows how the Bank used its branch network to establish dominance in select money markets: frontier money markets and markets for bills of exchange and specie. These lines of business created synergies with the Bank’s fiscal duties, and profits that helped cover their costs. The Bank’s branch in New Orleans, Louisiana, became its geographic centre of gravity, in contrast with the state-chartered banking system, which was already, by the 1820s, centred around New York. This book is of great interest to those who study banking and American history, as well as economic students who have a great interest in economic history.

Download or read book Thomas Tooke and the Monetary Thought of Classical Economics written by Matthew Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-03-07 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive account and reconsideration of the contribution to political economy of Thomas Tooke (1774-1858), classical economist and influential monetary theorist. Its chief purpose is to examine Tooke’s contributions to political economy with the aim of bringing to light its unified nature and its important legacy to contemporary economics. In doing so the book aims to throw new light on monetary analysis within the framework of classical economics. There remains no comprehensive account of Tooke’s contributions that is concerned with showing his lasting and ongoing influence on the development of monetary thought. The book provides an interpretation and analytical study of Tooke’s political economy from the standpoint of the classical tradition. This enables a demonstration of how his constructive contribution throws a new light on monetary thought in this tradition.
Download or read book The Growth of Economic Thought written by Henry William Spiegel and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a new and updated edition of this classic textbook, Henry William Spiegel brings his discussion and analysis of economic thought into the 1990s. A new introductory chapter offering an overall view of the history of economics and a bibliographic survey of the economic literature of the 1980s and early 1990s have been added. Maintaining the link between economics and the humanities, Spiegel's text will continue to introduce students to a wide range of topics in the history of economic thought. From reviews of previous editions: "The history of economic thought to end all histories of economic thought."--Robert D. Patton, Journal of Economic Literature "The book is in the grand tradition of the history of doctrines. It is a history of economic thought broadly conceived--and superbly written to boot. It is not to much to say that Spiegel's book will become and remain a leading text in the field."--Warren J. Samuels, Social Science The author conveys the essence of an idea simply and clearly, yet in a graceful style."--William F. Kennedy, Journal of Economic Literature
