Book The Story of Slavery Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Slavery Classic Reprint written by Booker T. Washington and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Slavery Booker T. Washington, the author of the following sketch of slavery in America, was himself born a slave, and the story of his life begins where "The Story of Slavery" leaves off. He was born about 1858 or 1859 on a plantation near Hales Ford, Va., about twenty-five miles east of the city of Roanoke, in a region which, now almost deserted, was in slavery days a flourishing tobacco country. A few years ago ha was invited to speak at the annual fair at Roanoke, and took advantage of the opportunity to drive out to the old plantation to visit again the scene of his childhood. He met there several members of the Burroughs family to which he had formerly belonged, and with them he went through the old Burroughs house, which is standing, and talked over the old days. It was while he was living there that he was awakened one morning to find his mother kneeling on the earth floor of the little cabin in which they lived, praying that "Lincoln and his armies might be successful and that one day she and her children might be free." It was here a little later on, as he tells us in the book, "Up From Slavery," in which he has related the story of his life, that he heard the announcement that he and all the' other slaves were free. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Slavery and Serfdom The new spirit which has been introduced into historical inquiry in recent times consists mainly in this, that the whole continuous life of Humanity is seen to be the object with which it has to deal. The picturesque or dramatic presentation of particular events, whilst it must always have its place and value, is more and more subordinated to the study of the fundamental social movement, which it should be the ultimate aim of the historian to understand and explain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Slave in History: His Sorrows and His Emancipation What the Serpent was to Laocoon, slavery with its entwining folds and its Slow torture has been to the world. The nineteenth century saw many changes, but none Of greater social effect than the movement which broke the power Of slavery. A usage of primitive times, it had grown with the rise and fall of empires, and ruled as the sum of all tyrannies, the embodiment of all cruelties, - pleading as its justification from age to age, even after the emancipation Of Europe, necessity, convenience, tradition, - till at last the spirit of free men rose against it. The struggle which followed was prolonged; it had its prophets and its martyrs; the inward light of conscience led the way with new illuminating power; and human sympathies that had been well-nigh strangled awoke, put on their strength, and did not slumber till they had won for the slave a place in the brotherhood of men. The final adjustment is yet to come. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
