Book History of the Breast

Download or read book History of the Breast written by Marilyn Yalom and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 1998-03-31 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative, pioneering, and wholly engrossing cultural history, noted scholar Marilyn Yalom explores twenty-five thousand years of ideas, images, and perceptions of the female breast--in religion, psychology, politics, society, and the arts. Through the centuries, the breast has been laden with hugely powerful and contradictory meanings. There is the "good breast" of reverence and life, the breast that nourishes infants and entire communities, as depicted in ancient idols, fifteenth-century Italian Madonnas, and representations of equality in the French Revolution. Then there is the "bad breast" of Ezekiel's wanton harlots, Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, and the torpedo-breasted dominatrix, symbolizing enticement and aggression. Yalom examines these contradictions--and illuminates the implications behind them. A fascinating, astute, and richly allusive journey from Paleolithic goddesses to modern day feminists, A History of the Breast is full of insight and surprises. As Yalom says, "I intend to make you think about women's breasts as you never have before." In this, she succeeds brilliantly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2012 New York Times Notable Book A 2013 Los Angeles Times Book Award Winner in the Science & Technology category An engaging narrative about an incredible, life-giving organ and its imperiled modern fate. Did you know that breast milk contains substances similar to cannabis? Or that it’s sold on the Internet for 262 times the price of oil? Feted and fetishized, the breast is an evolutionary masterpiece. But in the modern world, the breast is changing. Breasts are getting bigger, arriving earlier, and attracting newfangled chemicals. Increasingly, the odds are stacked against us in the struggle with breast cancer, even among men. What makes breasts so mercurial—and so vulnerable? In this informative and highly entertaining account, intrepid science reporter Florence Williams sets out to uncover the latest scientific findings from the fields of anthropology, biology, and medicine. Her investigation follows the life cycle of the breast from puberty to pregnancy to menopause, taking her from a plastic surgeon’s office where she learns about the importance of cup size in Texas to the laboratory where she discovers the presence of environmental toxins in her own breast milk. The result is a fascinating exploration of where breasts came from, where they have ended up, and what we can do to save them.

Book A Boob s Life

Download or read book A Boob s Life written by Leslie Lehr and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Boob’s Life explores the surprising truth about women’s most popular body part with vulnerable, witty frankness and true nuggets of American culture that will resonate with everyone who has breasts—or loves them. Author Leslie Lehr wants to talk about boobs. She’s gone from size AA to DDD and everything between, from puberty to motherhood, enhancement to cancer, and beyond. And she’s not alone—these are classic life stages for women today. At turns funny and heartbreaking, A Boob’s Life explores both the joys and hazards inherent to living in a woman’s body. Lehr deftly blends her personal narrative with national history, starting in the 1960s with the women’s liberation movement and moving to the current feminist dialogue and what it means to be a woman. Her insightful and clever writing analyzes how America’s obsession with the female form has affected her own life’s journey and the psyche of all women today. From her prize-winning fiction to her viral New York Times Modern Love essay, exploring the challenges facing contemporary women has been Lehr’s life-long passion. A Boob’s Life, her first project since breast cancer treatment, continues this mission, taking readers on a wildly informative, deeply personal, and utterly relatable journey. No matter your gender, you’ll never view this sexy and sacred body part the same way again.

The breast as sexual object and even a site of smuggling are also covered. As a whole, the Cultural Encyclopedia of the Breast takes an engaging and accessible look at this notable body part.

Book A short history of breast cancer

Download or read book A short history of breast cancer written by D. de Moulin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third Breast Cancer Working Conference of the Breast Cancer Cooperative Group of the European Organization for Research on Treatment of Cancer, to be held in Amsterdam on April 27-29, 1983, was the principle motive for writing this book. It was felt that a short review of the main pathogenetic conceptions and therapeutic principles which have presented themselves with regard to mammary cancer in the course of Western history, might help to draw a more complete picture of where we stand today. It is not easy to decide which ideas, although discarded, deserve yet to be remembered and which authors from the past may be considered to be truly representative of the scientific climate of their age. Twenty centuries have produced quite a lot of ideas and the number of medical authors who advanced, or rejected, or modified, or revived them, is really uncountable. So the historian has to make a selec tion and choices are perforce subjective and open to criticism. In writing this book I tried to consult original sources in the original language as much as possible. These sources were not always strictly medical since I aimed at placing the problem of malignant breast disease - which might serve as a paradigm of cancer in general - in a somewhat wider context. For the history of medicine is not only a history of ideas, but also that of people, of institutions, of society.

Book excerpt: “Build-A-Boob” is the inspirational story of one woman’s refusal to give up on having her breasts and her life restored after breast cancer radiation destroyed her chest at the age of 46. Breast cancer affects us all. Most of us know someone who has it or has had it. What we don’t know and don’t often hear about are the stories of pain and the physical and emotional scars that are left behind. This is about survival .........after the cure. Her story offers hope to millions of women, showing how actually using liposuction can rebuild a breast by regenerating one’s own skin. Very few plastic surgeons are currently using this procedure and this is an important issue for all women. The technique of using liposuction to rebuild a breast in its entirety is not new. What is new is that Lisa Masters’ stems cells from her fat totally restored the skin and fat damaged by radiation allowing the eventual insertion of a permanent implant. All of this was done through trial and error, and her plastic surgeon, Dr. Sergio Zamora says that this procedure works every single time. The process took four and half years to complete. In addition, she addresses medical insurance concerns and how her HMO, Florida Health Care BC/BS, supported her through this lengthy process. Lisa, like millions after being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, went through the typical therapies. She underwent two lumpectomies, chemotherapy, a bilateral mastectomy followed by immediate reconstruction with the insertion of tissue expanders and a hysterectomy. When she healed from the surgeries, she had radiation therapy. It only took 15 additional surgeries, but, Lisa Masters now has two breasts and a purpose...to spread the word and break the silence of those who live with the scars that breast cancer has left behind. The book is written from her perspective which includes 25 very graphic breast photos from beginning to end along with her own photo in order to make the story personal. The medical photos alone tell a story of success and they are difficult to look at. However, she feels those photos must be shown to the world and must be connected to a face; her face. Build-A-Boob talks about Lisa Masters’ family and their life prior to cancer. The book also talks about the toil this disease took on everyone involved. “Build-A-Boob” is a story of failure, pain, determination and success told with humor and optimism that involves a tenacious plastic surgeon and a woman who never settled. Included is a “Forward” written by plastic surgeon Dr. Sergio Zamora, Daytona Beach, FL

Book The History and Mystery of Breast Cancer

Download or read book The History and Mystery of Breast Cancer written by Michael Baum and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cancer and its treatment is a terribly complex problem that involves all the intricacies of the human body, the anatomical and microscopic anatomy of the breast, the endocrine system, and bone metabolism, as well as the nature of malignant transformation. Even experts still have uncertainties. However, there is now an ethical and legal obligation for specialists to share their uncertainties with their patients when we are looking for informed consent before invasive procedures. Obsessive ruminations about the threat of breast cancer mean that few in the lay public know that breast cancer has slipped out of the top seven causes of death for women. Treatments for breast cancer might increase the risk of death from cardio-vascular disease, whilst, on the other hand, denying women in this age group hormone replacement therapy for the unjustified fear of breast cancer can impair their quality of life, cognitive function and bone mineral density. The totality of women?ÇÖs health and expectation of life must always trump the single-issue fanatics who only view women as the sum of their two breasts. This is more than a self-help book, but should also be considered as introducing the history and mystery of breast cancer, from the time of the Ancient Egyptians to the modern era, as well as hopes for the future."
