Book A History of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States Classic Reprint written by Henry Eyster Jacobs and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the United States IF the principle be correct that the biography of a man cannot be properly written Without tracing his ancestry and examining the influences that have contributed, long before his birth, to the formation of his character, it is no less true that the past history and the present condition Of the various Christian denominations of America cannot be rightly understood unless we recur to their sources in Europe and analyze the individual factors that have eu tered into their life before they reached this country. AS no communion can be absolutely sundered from its past history, the historical standpoint must always be the basis of all enduring practical work. We cannot deal success fully with men unless we know who they are, and whence they came, and What they mean. The historical ante cedents and relations and development must be appreciated and recognized before any results can be expected from the kindly feeling and earnest efforts of even the warmest advocates of Christian union. A candid and discriminating View of its precise historical situation on the part Of those upon Whom rests the responsibility for leadership is an indispensable prerequisite to all progress Within a Church. Even where there are the best Of reasons for abandoning, in some directions, the past development, it must be done intelligently, or far more may be lost than is gained. The Lutheran Church in America cannot be understood, there fore, without an acquaintance with the Lutheran Church in the centers from which it has originated. The history Of the Lutheran Church in America actually begins with the Reformation. Lutheranism is a specific form of Christian life. The propriety Of the name as a designation of that form Of life is not for us to determine. Apart from our willingness or unwillingness to assume it, it has become a fixed term for a definite and well-known object. AS religion is not mere intellectualism, or mere sentiment, or mere activity, SO Lutheranism, as a form of the only true religion, Christian ity, is far more than a system of doctrines, or a mode Of worship, or a form of Church organization. The Spirit Of a church is always greater and deeper than its expression; its faith is always greater than its confession. Lutheran ism is a mode Of viewing and receiving and living the truths of Christianity; or rather of viewing and receiving and living in mystical union with Him Who is the begin ning and end of all these truths. The peculiarities which mark its relation to Christ determine peculiarities With respect to other Objects. The principles underlying the doctrinal position reappear in the Spheres Of ethics and liturgics, of homiletics and church government. Even the faith Of a great sculptor or a great musical composer will express itself in a different way according to the peculiar ities of the confession by which his religious life has been nourished and trained. Everything that enters into the religious life, or that proceeds from it, is molded and C01 ored by the specific form which that life assumes. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Evangelical Lutheran Tennessee Synod Some years ago, the author was requested, by the Evangelical Lutheran Tennessee Synod, to prepare, for publication, the history of this Synod. This seemed to be necessary, in order to present the Synod in its true light before the Church and the world. Some years were spent in securing proper data or material for that purpose. Re course was had to different sources, as, the Minutes of this Synod and of other Synods, as well as to some of the most reliable and intelligent members of the Church, who Were present during the trials and con fiicts which gave rise to its organization, and to other reliable sources. The object was to present the true, historical facts, in a fair, impartial manner, without any disposition to reflect unnecessarily on any one, or to perpetuate strife or contention. An honest, faithful statement seemed to be necessary in order to perpetuate the facts. Whatever discrepancies may appear in some portions of this his tory, in regard to style, punctuation, &c., may be accounted for on the ground, that such portions were quoted in a general way, as they appeared on the records from which they were taken. The differences which appear in the elements and styles of the obituaries, result from the fact, that they are made up, with few exceptions, from the Minutes of Synod and church journals, nearly, in most instances, as their authors presented them. In the preparation of this work, care was taken to give such facts and matters as are best calculated to promote the highest interests of the Church, and to give them due prominence in a plain, Simple way. Facts and sound principles should be maintained and perpetuated. Truth is what is needed. There is too much cant, prevarication, and hypocrisy. Download or read book The Lutheran Church in American History Classic Reprint written by Abdel Ross Wentz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lutheran Church in American History The position of the Lutheran Church in America rests upon a birthright. It is not an immigrant church that needed to be naturalized after it was transplanted from some European land. It is as old as the Ameri can nation and much older than the American Republic. The Lutheran Church in America is an integral and potent part of American Christianity. The people in the Lutheran churches of the land are a constituent and typical element of the American nation. This fact, if properly understood and adequately weighed, will im press every Lutheran with a sense of his responsibility to his day and to his community. It should impress the Lutheran Church as a whole with a sense of its obligation to American civilization in general. Now this reciprocal relationship between American culture and the American Lutheran Church can be properly understood only in the light of the historical perspective. That the Lutheran churches are an inte gral and molding element in American Christianity and that Lutherans are a constituent and determining part of the American nation can be appreciated only when it is observed that our Church and our nation were born at the same time, grew up side by side, and developed by similar stages of progress. Book History of the Alleghany Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Pennsylvania Vol 1 of 2

This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Alleghany Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Pennsylvania, Vol. 1 of 2: Together With a Topical Handbook of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Its Ancestry, Origin and Development The appearances of works like this mark the dawn of a happier day in the Lutheran Church of America. They are the evidences of an awakening to larger and better things, and are themselves both the expression and the earnest of a new and more virile life in our communities. We have had all too few authors in our ranks. There has been an overplus of modesty, a decrying of publicity, both of which at length we are very properly overcoming. The organic life of the Church is bound to find expression. It owes to the world a forthshadowing. It must live its life uncloistered. We, too, like the first century folk, are "witnesses of these things." To be sympathetic, and at the same time keen and discriminating witnesses, with the facile pen as well as the fluent voice, is surely worthy of all effort. Just now there is the special call thrust upon us as a Church by the Luther anniversary for a mobilizing of our history. We need to hew out of its inexhaustibly rich mines material for our own building. Structure stuff for our age is to be had in multiform variety and workableness in the Reformation. It needs restating and adjustment. All efforts of the kind of our author's are, therefore, to be accredited. They have their place. The historic consciousness in recent years has experienced a general quickening. The Church here, too, must fall in line that it may be competent not only as an analyst, but also as an interpreter whose facts are martialed and whose philosophy is unmistaken. The present flux of things makes all the more essential. our grasp of a real continuity in our faith and its historic achievements. Lutheran Christianity at least is something more than a Don Quixote sallying forth to some jocund joust at his own sweet will. We have a solid work to do. For the task of it we need all possible light from both past and present. This brings to the front a unique and valuable feature of Mr. W. H. B. Carney's volume. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Germantown, Ohio: And Biographies of Its Pastors and Founders This little volume has been prepared for the special use and benefit of the members of the congregation whose history it records. To preserve and perpetuate among them and their descendants and successors the knowledge of the first planting and early history of their congregation, has been the main aim and end of the writer. But he has also had another object in view. He has long cherished the hope that the time might speedily come when some one, competent for the task, would undertake the work of writing the history of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in this western world. Fully aware that this can not be done unless the material for the history be first collected, and be furnished ready to the hand of the historian, he has written this account as a small contribution toward a general history. Book The Confessional History of the Lutheran Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Confessional History of the Lutheran Church Classic Reprint written by James William Richard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confessional History of the Lutheran Church The sad service, and yet a privilege, was assigned me by the author of this volume to preface his work by a few words expressive of the conditions of its issue. Professor Richard, after a brief yet severe illness lasting but five days, passed away, March 7th, from earthly labor in the full vigor of mental and physical life. Only one-half of the proof matter of the volume received his personal examination and correction before his death. This volume is the finis as well as the ripe fruit of his studies for twenty years in this department of scholarly research. It was the intention of the author to append to his volume a bibliography of the literature pertaining to this subject, and consulted by him in its preparation; but his sudden removal by death precluded the execution of the purpose. Fully two hundred volumes, chiefly Latin and German, were consulted, all of which are in the libraries of the Theological Seminary and of Pennsylvania College, save about twenty volumes, some not purchasable and borrowed, and several examined in the library of the University of Leipzig. It would doubtless have been a great pleasure to the author to read the reviews and criticisms of his work, and to elucidate and substantiate the claims resulting from his researchful labors. But he has now left the truth to vindicate itself on the pages of history. He labored to reach objective facts, and to relate them according to his consciousness of historic verity, a consciousness illumined by wide researches. The loss to the Theological Seminary of his living personality can only in part be compensated by a wide circle of readers who may be interested in this historic subject, and desire to be profited by his fruitful investigations and his gift of creedal discipline. Recognition is due Professors J. 0. Evjen and K. J. Grimm for their kind service of final proof reading and critical suggestions.
