Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Economics of Transport To primitive man living near river, lake or sea, the water road offered many considerable advantages over the land road. And it is fairly certain that, under the conditions stated, the invention of the coracle preceded the invention of the cart. Throughout commercial history it is safe to say that, taken as a. Whole, water transport has been cheaper than land transport. Nor is the reason far to seek. Not only has the land road to be constructed, and this frequently entails great labour and expense. Book The Economics of Railway Transport Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Economics of Railway Transport Classic Reprint written by Sydney Charles Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economics of Railway Transport It is hoped that the result may be of some interest and profit to two classes of readers to economic students as exemplifying the degree' to which practice must necessarily differ from theory, the concrete from the abstract; and to railway men, as showing the operation of scientific principles in their work. Of the presence of numerous faults of omission and commission no one can be more conscious than the writer. In regard to these he would plead the exigencies of time, for this book has had to be completed within the limits of a single furlough. As to other faults which may, and no doubt will, be obvious to the experienced reader, he can say nothing save to express the hope that his work may possibly induce others of wider experience and greater leisure to enter a field which up to the present has perhaps hardly received from British writers the attention due to it. Book Railway Transportation

Download or read book Railway Transportation written by Charles Lee Raper and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Transportation: A History of Its Economics and of Its Relation to the State So great has been the development of railway transportation, and so important have been the laws of the State's relation to it, since President Hadley's book was written, in 1885, that it is vitally necessary to bring the statement down to the present. The last quarter of a century has been so full of significant change, that it must necessarily be included in any work on railways. Railway Transportation is a new book, even in that part which treats of the early years, though it is, with his permission, based upon Hadley's Railroad Transportation - a work so admirable that it deserves to live as long as railways are the subject of serious study. Its chief purpose is to revise and enlarge Hadley's book. It traces the history of railway transportation in its more vital aspects in Great Britain, France, Italy, Germany, and the United States - in the most characteristic sections of the world. It traces this historical development, not for the sake of the antiquarian, solely to throw light upon the present management and regulation of the railways; and, along with the historical narrative, runs that spirit of criticism which makes comparisons and estimates of values. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of a Conference on the Economics of Highway Transport: Called by the Highway and Highway Transport Education Committee, Held at the University of Maryland, College Park, July 27, 1921 The Highway and Highway Transport Education Committee has called this conference for the purpose of getting your advice and help. The rapid development of motor transport, with increased production of motor vehicles and consequent stimulation of public interest in highways, has raised economic questions difficult to answer. Many of these have not as yet even been clearly formulated. Technical schools have surprisingly few cours'es bearing on the subject, although it is of vital concern to every citizen. Book Railway Economics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Railway Economics Classic Reprint written by H. T. Newcomb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Railway Economics Beginning approximately with the last quarter of the eighteenth century and continuing throughout that just closing there has been an almost revolutionary change in the organization and methods of productive industry. Among the most characteristic features Of this change is the increased importance Of the transportation ele ment in production. At the commencement of the period the necessary articles Of subsistence were, with few exceptions, wholly produced within the localities in which they were required for consumption, and ex changes between distant communities were practically restricted to articles of great value used only by those able to indulge in expensive luxuries. Means Of trans portation by water had improved but little, and those for transportation by land scarcely at all since the dawn of history. The movement of commodities was so costly as to be prohibitive of exchanges of ordinary food or textile products, so slow that perishable articles could traverse but the shortest distances, and accompanied by such excessive risks that at a few hundred miles from the regions of production the prices of even the most costly articles were doubled, trebled, or quadrupled. The contrast Offered at the present time is extreme. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
