Excerpt from book: criminal persuades himself that in killing his victim he did not act unjustly, he has literally no sin whatever to confess upon that head, according to his Church's teaching: he need not even mention the deed in the confessional. However, I shall suppose that he is not quite so hardened as the teaching authorised in his Church would make him; I shall suppose that he does think he has committed a sin in some degree by killing a man, even though, according the agrarian code, he did not put him to death unjustly. He confesses this sin, then, and the priest gives him absolution, on the condition of his performing some act of penance by way of satisfaction. Now the real case with regard to sins against God which at the same time are crimes against man is this: that no person who has thus sinned against God can be pardoned unless he make all the reparation in his power to man. This is a vital truth, and it is a truth too frequently forgotten. People must not fancy that they can really repent of their sin against God, and yet contrive to enjoy its advantages or to escape the penalties affixed to it by man. To use a homely but expressive proverb, they cannot eat their cake and have it. They cannot be really sorry for the sin and yet retain its profits or escape its punishment. In the case I have supposed, therefore, the case of a murderer, there can be no true penitence, and therefore there can be no forgiveness, unless the criminal makes all the reparation to society he can, and this can only be done by confessing his crime and giving himself up to justice. This is the only reparation he Cardinal Cullen, and entitled What every Christian ought to know and do. can make, and this reparation he is bound to make. Creeds stand as ancient landmarks denoting the "location" of believers' hearts in history. Noting where one deviates from an ancient creed gives a person a distinct idea about where his or her own theological convictions stand in relation to other believers throughout history. Perhaps this also helps us to discover what direction we are moving. Are we moving closer to Christ? To God's Word? To the heart of God Himself? Or are we moving further away? The confession that I will be recommending to you in this volume is the standard-bearing creed in the Presbyterian or Reformed branch of Christianity. Influenced heavily by the thinking of Reformation theologian John Calvin (1509-1564), the Westminster Confession (1647) is a confessional exemplar of Reformed theology.2 The Westminster Confession of Faith is the premiere example of theological intellectualism absorbed in the beauty of the sovereignty of God. The Westminster Confession, and Calvin before it for that matter, were both completely committed to the theological concept that God is sovereign over the entire universe. Therefore, as you study this Confession you will undoubtedly encounter the Living God as ruler of the cosmos, the world, the events of your life, and hopefully your heart.
