Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tocsin of Revolt: And Other Essays They are self-centered and impatient of con trol. They are inclined to boast themselves as the foes of tradition and as the enemies of con vention. They claim a large freedom for them selves; and, like the Puritans of old, they are prone to deny a like freedom to others. Their opinions may be half-baked, but their prejudices are case-hardened. They see no reason to sus peet that there may be interstices in their om niscience. They feel assured in their juvenile energy that they know it all; and they are not yet old enough to have found out that the man who knows it all does not know much, does not indeed know himself, which is the be ginning oi knowledge. In their callow imma turity they would only sniff contemptuously if they happened to hear the oft quoted saying of the Master of Trinity, that we are none of us infallible - not even the youngest of us. Book The Forgotten Man and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Forgotten Man and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by William Graham Sumner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forgotten Man and Other Essays With the present collection the publication of Sumner's Essays comes to an end. The original project of publishers and editor contemplated but a single volume - "War and Other Essays" - and they accordingly equipped that volume with a bibliography which was as complete as they then could make it. But when, later on, other materials came to be known about, and especially after the discovery of a number of unpublished manuscripts, the encouraging reception accorded to the first venture led us to publish a second, and then a third collection: "Earth Hunger and Other Essays" and "The Challenge of Facts and Other Essays." It was during the preparation of the latter of these, now some five years ago, that the late Professor Callender deplored to the editor the omission of certain of Sumner's essays in political economy - in particular those dealing with free trade and sound money. And the reviewers of preceding collections had reminded us, rightly enough, that there should be a fuller bibliography and also an index covering all the essays. In this last volume we have striven to meet these several suggestions and criticisms. And it is now the purpose of the publishers to form of these singly issued volumes a set of four, numbered in the order of their issue. Book Our Early Female Novelists and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Early Female Novelists and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by Alexander Malcolm Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Early Female Novelists, and Other Essays In the history of English story-telling an altogether notable place is occupied by Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. They are remarkable not only as masterpieces of narrative, but as containing both description of incidents and delineation of manners; not only as triumphs of literary expression, but as giving artistic form both to the romance of chivalry and to the tale of common life. Wholly wonderful it is that at so early a period such directness of movement and perfection of style, such vividness of portraiture and realism of incident, are found in verse, while centuries pass before similar excellences are found in prose. It is, indeed, peculiarly interesting to contrast Chaucer's practice with the subsequent course of English fiction. Book Mere Literature and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mere Literature and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by Woodrow Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mere Literature and Other Essays A singular phrase this, "mere literature," - the irreverent invention of a scientific age. Literature we know, but "mere" literature? We are not to read it as if it meant sheer literature, literature in the essence, stripped of all accidental or ephemeral elements, and left with nothing but its immortal charm and power. "Mere literature" is a serious sneer, conceived in all honesty by the scientific mind, which despises things that do not fall within the categories of demonstrable knowledge. It means nothing hut literature, as who should say, "mere talk," "mere fabrication," "mere pastime." The scientist, with his head comfortably and excusably full of knowable things, takes nothing seriously and with his hat off, except human knowledge. Download or read book The Foe of Compromise and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by William Garrott Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foe of Compromise, and Other Essays The case for compromise was never put better, perhaps, than it was by moderate American statesmen after the great political compromise of 1850. That adjustment, they said, had saved the Union; and they pointed out to the defeated radicals that the noblest politics are but a compromise. The Union itself, they declared, is a compromise; so is the Constitution, and all social life, and the harmony of the entire universe. With sincere conviction and a genuine fervor they dilated on the blessings we had won by being reasonable. Had we not won peace itself? "With what instantaneous and mighty charm," cried Rufus Choate, their orator, the measures of compromise "calmed the madness and anxiety of the hour!" And not peace alone, but love. "How, in a moment, the interrupted and parted currents of fraternal feeling reunited!" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Forces in Fiction and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forces in Fiction and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by Richard Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forces in Fiction and Other Essays Nor is it Jingoism, by the way, to remark that the introduction of some of the Southern and Western types so saliently depicted by younger American novelists - Page and Harris, Stuart, Thanet, Wister, Garland, Chopin, Fernald, and others - is as hopeful a sign as current fiction can show, and one hardly to be paralleled in England. In the earlier days Bret Harte took a unique place because of this same power, albeit not always used aright. Who, let us inquire, are the living personages in the stories of Henry James? Verily, since the days of The American, the best in this kind are but shadows. Stevenson, ad mirable in the other cardinal points of invention, construction, and a style that sets him apart from his contemporaries, has also thrown out upon the fictional canvas a few figures which are distinct - Alan Breck, David Balfour, both the Bal lantraes, Kirstie the elder, and quite a portrait gallery of rascals the most firm-bodied and pictur esque in the novel-writing of our time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Old Castle and Other Essays Seldom is it the teacher's lot to have any of his work perpetuated in lasting literary form. But Professor Win chester's students will remember how the work in the class room led up to finished summary lectures. They developed out of the rich autumn mould of his acquisitions, year after year,1 and showed us best of all how thorough and thought ful study had enabled him to see into the life of things. In these talks to students lay the origins of the public lec tures which charmed and enlightened a far more widely ranging audience. Even the latter, Professor Winchester rarely published. Therefore certain typical examples, rep resentative both of his power as a teacher and his appeal as a lecturer, it has now seemed best to give to the world. Art, once wrote their author, is. The only way the indi vidual has of perpetuating his personality. In this way these papers are not alone of intrinsic value but fitly memorial.
