Book The Historical Growth of the English Parish Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Historical Growth of the English Parish Church Classic Reprint written by A. Hamilton Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Growth of the English Parish Church His small book is intended to be a companion and complement to the writer's book in the same series on The Ground Plan of the English Parish Church. In that book the growth of the ground plan is treated with necessarily scanty reference to the circumstances to which, directly or indirectly, that growth is due. Some attempt is made in the present volume to supply an account of the historical conditions amid which our parish churches were built, to say something of the builders, and to remove the popular idea, still current even among educated people, that our architecture is mainly due to the profuse benefactions of the religious orders. A special chapter on chantry foundations, which played so large a part in the life of the later middle ages, follows the general historical chapter. The western tower, the porch, and the chancel are then described with more fulness than was possible in the description of the ground plan; and the decoration and furniture of the various parts of the church are treated in the closing chapter. Book The English Parish Church

Download or read book The English Parish Church written by J. Charles Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Parish Church: An Account of the Chief Building Types of Their Materials During Nine Centuries An endeavour too is made in these pages to set forth, after a succinct fashion, the undoubted but often forgotten fact that our ancestors, whilst regarding the church as primarily devoted to the worship of God and to the continuous round of the expression of their highest Faith, considered that the soul and body were so intimately connected that they habitually used the nave for purposes which we call secular or civil. All this tended in the direction of every class uniting in the maintenance and development of the parish church. More than usual attention is herein given to the Materials from which our churches were constructed, and how their shape and size so largely depended upon the nature of the stone by which they were surrounded, or by its absence and the frequency of flint or timber. It had been intended to follow this up by a chapter or section on Local Types, mapping out England into more or less definite divisions' but it was found, after some progress had been made, that the subject was too big for inclusion in a book of limited size, that it had as yet been scarcely sufficiently studied, and that it was better on the whole to give more attention to planning and to the successive periods of architecture. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Turning Points of English Church History The plan of this little book is, not to give a connected history of the Church of England, but to put before the reader some of its principal points, especially those which will help him to understand the Church questions of the present day. It has not been thought necessary in such a sketch as this to quote authorities but it may be desirable to state that pains have been taken to make the work accurate and impartial. To secure this the more effectually, the writer is permitted to say, that the proof sheets have been carefully revised by the Rev. W. Stubbs, Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford, one of our greatest authorities on ecclesiastical history. He is not to be held answerable for any opinions the work may contain, but his corrections and suggestions have added to its value, and his supervision will give the reader confidence in its general correctness. Book Parish Churches of England

Download or read book Parish Churches of England written by Thomas Warren Sears and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parish Churches of England: Illustrated From a Selection of Photographs Specially Taken by Thomas W. Sears for Harvard University They are never formal, or mannered, but are spontaneous and courageous in expression. Cell is added to cell, openings are made in walls, buttresses are supplemented or removed to suit the im mediate requirements. They have grown and developed as healthy organisms, not as affectations. There is scarcely one of them that does not show the activity and increase of religious functions from the time of the Normans until the devastating touch of Henry viiichecked their growth. Norman, Transitional, Early English, Dec orated, Perpendicular, - each and all of these styles have left their traces upon them, so intimately intermingled that the local verger today gives bewildering and not always enlightening information to the tourist, and the vicars and curates wrangle over the exact date of a capital or of a moulding as evidenced by the stone cutting or its position in the wall. It is interesting to follow the testimony of the buildings them selves, regardless of the intricate fabric of history and tradition woven about them by the local chroniclers. The battle of Hastings was in 1066. Before this time whatever chapels were built by the Saxons are of a crude description, - mere cells with pitched roofs, walls of rubble, flint and brick indiscriminately used, - but the square Saxon tower was existent, as was also-the round tower of the Celt. With the coming of the monks to Durham, with the founding of Norman abbeys, the small churches in the outskirts of the See began to multiply and in certain factors to imitate neighboring cathedrals. The square apse, the tower at the crossing of the transept and nave and great length in comparison to width are characteristic of English cathedrals. The small churches also show imitative qual ities. Saxon square towers were at times incorporated into the building, in fact made the nucleus of it, as occurs in some of the churches near Hitchin Herts.
