Book The Historic Christ in the Faith of To Day Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Historic Christ in the Faith of To Day Classic Reprint written by William Alexander Grist and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-13 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Christ in the Faith of to-Day I. One of the elements of modern religious life to be greatly prized is a widespread desire to learn all that can be known of Jesus of Nazareth. Every attempt to meet this need of a reliable representation of the facts about Jesus must be based upon pro longed criticism of the historical sources, combined with recurrent contemplation of His Person. The Gospels must be appraised, or they will never be appreciated. Evasion of free inquiry, either on the pretext of the sanctity of the books or the majesty of their subject, excites a corrosive suspicion that the history cannot be trustworthy. Even now an opinion is abroad that we cannot be sure of the truth of the Gospels; and with it mingles an impatience at endless, abstruse inquiries which lead nowhere. From all sorts and conditions of men there comes a loud demand for frankness from competent scholars. While there can be only a limited num ber of men intellectually equipped for dealing with the recondite problems arising out of the Synoptical and Johannine literature, there is a growing multitude who feel themselves held by the soul's quest for Jesus Christ. The following study, therefore, aims at showing how one of the multitude who seek for this supremely important knowledge, having been guided by an honest, earnest impressionism, has gained the satisfaction of a reconstructed con ception of the world's greatest, most loving and Divine Teacher. Jesus is no spent force; He is still luring men forward by His gracious, strong personality. The rigorous criticism to which the Gospels have been subjected has resulted in a vindication of their substantial historicity. Tnixlike a new thought of Jesus rises from the fires of criticism, andwe see this indestructible Person more clearly than any generation since the time of the Apostles. How He lived and died, what He believed and taught, can be discovered with greater certainty and lucidity by reason of the work done by scholars and critics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Christ I shall admit that Mr. Inge's attack, and especially a remark in which he suggested that we upheld a formal orthodoxy based on extreme scepticism, drew from me the lecture that holds the eighth place in this volume. That lecture throughout, and the ninth in part, go beyond the general subject proposed for consideration. But to confine oneself too rigidly to that subject is to court misunderstanding. My pur pose is the exact opposite of that which Mr. Inge attributed to me when he condemned a sharp sever ance between the object of faith and the world of physical phenomena. But the concentration of faith and science on one object - one Person - cannot be safely efl'ected without the most careful distinction of the two methods. Otherwise the Christian faith will either be reduced to an acquaintance, more or less intimate, with certain events that happened some centuries ago - a sort of historical knowledge tinged with emotion - or shrivel into an acceptance of formal propositions defiant of reality. It astonished me a little to find myself accused of wishing to base formal orthodoxy on scepticism - or indeed on any thing else. Mr. Inge must have seen Mambrino's helmet flashing in the sun. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels as Historical Documents, Vol. 1: The Early Use of the Gospels HE importance of the subject with which I attempt to deal in this work need not be insisted on. It will be recognised even when the rise of Christianity is viewed simply as one of the most momentous movements in the world's history. It will be felt still more deeply by all who consider that the Christian Faith, as held in all ages and to this day by the vast majority of Christians, is essentially faith in the fact of a revelation of God's character and purpose made in the historical person of Jesus Christ, and through events connected with him, for which the Gospels are the most explicit, and among the primary, witnesses. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christ We Forget: A Life of Our Lord for Men of to-Day How is this to come about? Over and over again, nations have revived by reading the forgotten Bible. It was so even in the reign of old Josiah. And again it was so in Ezra's time. Our Blessed Saviour Him self, when He was on earth, read the Bible and based His teaching and His conduct upon it. So did His Apostles. So did the Reformers, the Puritans, and the Methodists, and so do missionaries the wide world over. Don't worry about clergy and churches. Let them go their own way - at any rate, for the moment. Read and know the Bible, and all else, including public worship, will fall into its place. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies in the Life of Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in the Life of Christ Classic Reprint written by Andrew Martin Fairbairn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the Life of Christ These Studies in the Life of Christ were originally prepared as a series of Sunday evening discourses, while the author was a minister in Aberdeen. This is stated, partly, that he may connect them with a city and people he Will always love, and, partly, that he may thus most simply define their real character and limits. They are not. Exhaustive and critical discussions on the Gospel History, but, at most, attempts at orientation - at reach ing points of view from which the life of Christ may be understood and construed. The author hopes, should life and health be granted to him, to return to this greatest of all Histories, and deal with it in a more critical and comprehensive spirit especially in its relations to contemporary history, and in its action, through the Apostles and the Church, on the creation of Christianity. Meanwhile he sends this volume forth in the hope that it may help to make the Person it seeks to interpret more real, living, and loveable to the men of to-day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Faith in Christ We have invented new instruments for our science, more revolutionary in their way than the steam-engine and the motor car. We have developed new processes of thought, more revolutionary still. We have shifted our point of view from its previous proud position at the centre of the universe to a very modest location on a satellite of one of an innumerable con glomeration of suns. Altogether we have achieved for ourselves a new world more radically than if we had packed our baggage and migrated to Mars. One need not be surprised, therefore, if the ancient theologies seem to the ordinary man of to-day, not merely unsatisfactory, which would be bad enough, but uninteresting. Book The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by H. R. Mackintosh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ That there is a main stream, that the authors of the New Testament are eventually one in their view of Christ, with a unity which is powerful enough to absorb and subdue their differences Of interpretation, is not indeed to be lightheartedly assumed. But it is rendered ex tremely probable by the simple experimental fact that the Church has always found it possible to nourish her faith in the Redeemer from every part of the apostolic writings. Further, this natural presumption is vindicated by a closer scrutiny of the facts. Two certainties are shared in common by all New Testament writers: First, that the life and consciousness of Jesus was in form com pletely human; second, that this historic life, apprehended as instinct with the powers of redemption, is one with the life of God Himself. In Christ they find God personally present for our salvation from sin and death. Yet in spite or rather because of this basal agreement it is the more impressive to contemplate the sovereign freedom with which they surveyed Christ, telling what they saw in books which have been quite justly described as literature, not dogma. Each looked at Jesus with his own eyes; each Spoke out of his own mind; and to force their words about Him into a mechanical and external harmony is simply to misconceive the genius of Christian faith. The Bible, on the face of it, professes to be the record of an historical revelation of the most distinctly super natural character a Thus saith the Lord pervades it from beginning to end; it is structural in character; the Old Testament fulfils itself in the New law and prophets. Book The Christian Faith and the New Day Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Faith and the New Day Classic Reprint written by Cleland Boyd McAfee and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Faith and the New Day This is not a reconstruction of theology but a plea for that work and some suggestion of a few typical points where it is needed and opportune. A teacher of theology shrinks a bit when it is said that the day for theology is over; he is apt to think in stead that the day has just come for vital religion which will mean a vital theology. But such a teacher knows well that theology can be devitalized by mistaking its own expressions for the truth it is trying to express. Visitors to theological seminaries often tell young men they are not to preach their theology, whereas in any sound way of speaking it is the only thing they are to preach. Yet the most deadly thing that could be preached is a theology that does not carry the message of religion for its own day. The appeal herein is not to technical theologians but to working ministers and thoughtful laymen who, after all, build and use the theology that is living and who sometimes fear to see it change. The great days just passed have given many of us a renewed assurance that Christianity is more vital and forceful than it has been for many a long day. Its vitality may well claim the right to phrase itself anew - which means to reconstruct theology at any point where it may need reconstructing.
