Book The Historic Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Historic Christ Classic Reprint written by T. A. Lacey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Christ I shall admit that Mr. Inge's attack, and especially a remark in which he suggested that we upheld a formal orthodoxy based on extreme scepticism, drew from me the lecture that holds the eighth place in this volume. That lecture throughout, and the ninth in part, go beyond the general subject proposed for consideration. But to confine oneself too rigidly to that subject is to court misunderstanding. My pur pose is the exact opposite of that which Mr. Inge attributed to me when he condemned a sharp sever ance between the object of faith and the world of physical phenomena. But the concentration of faith and science on one object - one Person - cannot be safely efl'ected without the most careful distinction of the two methods. Otherwise the Christian faith will either be reduced to an acquaintance, more or less intimate, with certain events that happened some centuries ago - a sort of historical knowledge tinged with emotion - or shrivel into an acceptance of formal propositions defiant of reality. It astonished me a little to find myself accused of wishing to base formal orthodoxy on scepticism - or indeed on any thing else. Mr. Inge must have seen Mambrino's helmet flashing in the sun. Book The Christ of the Forty Days

Download or read book The Christ of the Forty Days written by A.B. Simpson and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-02 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, The Christ of the Forty Days, A.B. Simpson tells of the overwhelming experiences of the risen Christ. A.B. Simpson scripturally tells of the 40 days between Christ's resurrection and ascension, His appearance many times to His disciples, His teaching them about the nature of discipleship and His own divine nature and power they need to "go into all the world." In The Christ of the 40 Days, it is with this same power, that A.B. Simpson affirms is no less needed today to accomplish God's work today in all the world. The Christ of the Forty Days is a triumphant book of overpowering declaration and peace. He wins, He has defeated the aggressor, and Christ has been declared the victor! Christ is not an untouchable unapproachable Christ but is the opposite, knowing that we need Him and allows Himself to be a truly understanding Christ. He is "able to 'sympathize with our weaknesses' and ready to help us in our times of need." But he will also teach us during these times of trials and stress. He even took the opportunity to challenge his disciples during this most stressful time in their lives to "go into all the world and preach the gospel," sending them a clear message of that their real work had just started. The Christ of the Forty Days was originally published in 1883.

This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Jesus and the Theological Christ The Addresses which are reproduced with some expansions in this little book, were intended to give to those unacquainted with the details of historical study some insight into the results of modern investiga tion in the Gospel-field, and some knowledge of the process by which the ecclesiastical conception of the person of Jesus Christ was slowly formed. In such brief surveys much was necessarily left unsaid, and the relation of Jesus to our religious experience did not fall within the lecturer's scope. Book The Historic Christ in the Faith of To Day Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Historic Christ in the Faith of To Day Classic Reprint written by William Alexander Grist and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-13 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historic Christ in the Faith of to-Day I. One of the elements of modern religious life to be greatly prized is a widespread desire to learn all that can be known of Jesus of Nazareth. Every attempt to meet this need of a reliable representation of the facts about Jesus must be based upon pro longed criticism of the historical sources, combined with recurrent contemplation of His Person. The Gospels must be appraised, or they will never be appreciated. Evasion of free inquiry, either on the pretext of the sanctity of the books or the majesty of their subject, excites a corrosive suspicion that the history cannot be trustworthy. Even now an opinion is abroad that we cannot be sure of the truth of the Gospels; and with it mingles an impatience at endless, abstruse inquiries which lead nowhere. From all sorts and conditions of men there comes a loud demand for frankness from competent scholars. While there can be only a limited num ber of men intellectually equipped for dealing with the recondite problems arising out of the Synoptical and Johannine literature, there is a growing multitude who feel themselves held by the soul's quest for Jesus Christ. The following study, therefore, aims at showing how one of the multitude who seek for this supremely important knowledge, having been guided by an honest, earnest impressionism, has gained the satisfaction of a reconstructed con ception of the world's greatest, most loving and Divine Teacher. Jesus is no spent force; He is still luring men forward by His gracious, strong personality. The rigorous criticism to which the Gospels have been subjected has resulted in a vindication of their substantial historicity. Tnixlike a new thought of Jesus rises from the fires of criticism, andwe see this indestructible Person more clearly than any generation since the time of the Apostles. How He lived and died, what He believed and taught, can be discovered with greater certainty and lucidity by reason of the work done by scholars and critics. Book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Ewald and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ Even in the period next after this violent stifling, this mysterious stillness of the new Spirit in the world lasts on until it irresistibly penetrates it ever more strongly, and then soon both Jews and heathens say enough of it, when they had already lost the opportunity of being able to know most accurately about Christ. Thus Flavius Josephus is the only non-christian historian of the first century we possess who speaks of Christ. In the first indeed of his two great works - the history of the Jewish War - he did not speak of Him, he had no need in respect of the principal subject of it. But we cannot see how he, in the Antiquities, should have neglected to speak, however briefly, of Christ and His followers; as there he mentions much far less important, and that work professes to give a general history of the people, according to all its aims, various divisions, and manifold crises. Had he also in this work said nothing of Christianity, that could only be explained from a want of clear views on the subjects which had so completely fettered him, that he preferred to be silent on a matter so imperfectly known to him. He had certainly, when he wrote his work for the roman-greek world, a secret horror of every thing Messianic, and Christianity must have appeared to him, as to all the Jews of his views, something incomprehensible; and' besides, as it was felt how much this last division had injured the Jews, it must have been a subject disagree able and repugnant. But these grounds seem insuflicient for his entirely overlooking it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Jesus of History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Jesus of History Classic Reprint written by T. R. Glover and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jesus of History I regard it as a high privilege to be associated with this volume. Many who know and value Mr. Glover's work on The Conflict of Religions in the Early Roman Empire must have wistfully desired to secure from his graphic pen just such a book as is here given to the world. He possesses the rare power of reverently handling familiar truths or facts in such manner as to make them seem to be almost new. There are few gifts more precious than this at a time when our familiarity with the greatest and most sacred of all narratives is a chief hindrance to our ready appreciation of its living power. I believe that no one will read Mr. Glover's chapters, and especially his description of the parable-teaching given by our Lord, without a sense of having been introduced to a whole series of fresh and fruitful thoughts. He has expanded for us with the force, the clearness, and the power of vivid illustration which we have learned to expect from him, the meaning of a sentence in the earlier volume I have alluded to, where he insists that, Jesus of Nazareth does stand in the center of human history, that He has brought God and man into a new relation, that He is the present concern of every one of us and that there is more in Him than we have yet accounted for. Download or read book The Public Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by Henry James Coleridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ The miracles of this period are comparatively few. This only means that few are recorded, the Evangelists being occupied in relating the incidents which are more peculiar to the time of which they are speaking. It cannot be doubted that, wherever our Lord went in the course of His preaching, He marked His way by these prodigies of charity and compassion. This 18 obvious, when we consider that, by a kind of accident - though nothing in the arrangement of the Gospels is really accidental - we have in the last chapters of this volume the history of a few successive hours, and these are full of miracles of the first class, - the stilling of the storm on the Lake, the casting out of the legion of devils, the cure of the woman with an issue of blood, the raising to life of the daughter of Jairus, followed by the cure of two blind men, and the casting out of the devil from one who was also dumb. All these things happened within a period of twenty-four hours, of which we have the complete account in the Gospels. And these were miracles, in many cases, worked almost against our Lord's will, that is, which were to some extent forced upon Him by the circumstances of the time. In the days that are to come, he said, God will send you a child. His name Shall be Jesus, and he shall be called the Son of the Highest. God will give him the throne of David forever. How can this be Mary asked; but the angel answered only, The power of the High est shall overshadow you, and the child shall be called the Son of God.
