Book Wilmington North Carolina to 1861

Download or read book Wilmington North Carolina to 1861 written by Alan D. Watson and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of America's thirteen original colonies, North Carolina was one of the most rural, its urban population miniscule and its maritime commerce severely limited--except in the town of Wilmington. Prior to the Civil War, the coastal town was North Carolina's largest urban area and principal seaport, with shipping as the mainstay of the local economy. Wilmington indeed was a singular place in colonial and antebellum North Carolina. This book presents the history of Wilmington from its founding and development to the eve of the Civil War. Part I traces Wilmington's history from the incorporation of the town in 1739-40 to 1789, when North Carolina joined the newly formed United States of America. This section focuses on the confused and disputed origins of Wilmington, life in a colonial urban setting, the growing importance of the port, and town governance. Part II expands upon the preceding topics for the years 1789 to 1861. It also examines the economic development of the port, the wide variety of social activities, the growth of the African American population, and Wilmington's role in state and national politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing work of public history that shows how communities remember their pasts in different ways to fit specific narratives, Race, Place, and Memory charts the ebb and flow of racial violence in Wilmington, North Carolina, from the 1730s to the present day. Margaret Mulrooney argues that white elites have employed public spaces, memorials, and celebrations to maintain the status quo. The port city has long celebrated its white colonial revolutionary origins, memorialized Decoration Day, and hosted Klan parades. Other events, such as the Azalea Festival, have attempted to present a false picture of racial harmony to attract tourists. And yet, the revolutionary acts of Wilmington’s African American citizens—who also demanded freedom, first from slavery and later from Jim Crow discrimination—have gone unrecognized. As a result, beneath the surface of daily life, collective memories of violence and alienation linger among the city’s black population. Mulrooney describes her own experiences as a public historian involved in the centennial commemoration of the so-called Wilmington Race Riot of 1898, which perpetuated racial conflicts in the city throughout the twentieth century. She shows how, despite organizers’ best efforts, a white-authored narrative of the riot’s contested origins remains. Mulrooney makes a case for public history projects that recognize the history-making authority of all community members and prompts us to reconsider the memories we inherit. Book Wilmington s Carolina Heights

Download or read book Wilmington s Carolina Heights written by David K. Ohashi and published by Brief History. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 100 years ago, outside the old city limits of Wilmington, N.C., Mary Bridgers began a novel experiment in residential development now known as Carolina Heights. The neighborhood she began has grown and matured, but remains a jewel-box settlement of only 12-blocks, rich in a variety of turn-of-the-century architecture. Each street and throroughfare offers glimpses of magnificent mansions as well as smaller dwellings whose designs were directly influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. Home to a diverse culture of Wilmington residents, Carolina Heights has resisted the trends to change the appearance of her old homes, churches and buildings. As such, the neighborhood serves as a hidden treasure of preservation, architecture, and historic homes and gardens.

Book Historic Photos of Wilmington

Download or read book Historic Photos of Wilmington written by Wade G. Dudley and published by Historic Photos. This book was released on 2008 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a century after its incorporation in 1740, Wilmington, North Carolina remained a sleepy port city. Then, the coming of steam-power, especially railroad and steamship, enabled a steady growth. War, whether the Civil War with its blockade-runners or the shipbuilding born of the world conflicts of the 1900s, brought more growth. With that expansion came, of course, growing pains. The story of Wilmington, North Carolina is a story of rivers, sounds, and sea, and of a city that grew near the places where those waters mingled. It is the story of a port that became the ?Lifeline of the Confederacy” as well as the lifeline of a state. And in this case, it is the story of over a hundred years of history (1860s to 1970s) told through almost two hundred photographs?the captured essences of people and events now lost.
