Book excerpt: A part of MT III Golf Media's Black Book series of national and regional course guidebooks, The Hilton Head Golf Guide profiles every golf course in the Lowcountry coastal region from Savannah, Georgia to Charleston, South Carolina, from the ritziest private clubs to the smallest nine-hole par 3. Continuing the series' tradition of providing accurate, detailed and candid assessments of each layout, its profiles range from 150-600 words and include a unique five-star Collectability Rating - a course rating method entirely exclusive to the Black Book. Each profile also offers a full range of ancillary information, from a layout's architectural genesis and contact information to its rating, slope, practice facilities and position in current national/state rankings. No other guidebook covers the region so candidly or comprehensively, or with so detailed an eye towards a course's history and design evolution. Thus also something of a reference volume for historians and architectural aficionados, The Hilton Head Golf Guide is an indispensable source of information for both visitors and local residents alike.

Book Hilton Head Island Travel Guide South Carolina USA

Download or read book Hilton Head Island Travel Guide South Carolina USA written by David Mills and published by Sonittec. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilton Head Island Travel Guide, South Carolina, USA. Gullah History and Tradition. Hilton Head Island is known far and wide as a vacation destination that prides itself on its top-notch golf courses and tennis programs, world-class resorts, and beautiful beaches. But the island is also part of the storied American South, steeped in a rich, colorful history. It has seen Native Americans and explorers, battles from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, plantations and slaves, and development and environmentally focused growth. More than 10,000 years ago, the island was inhabited by Paleo-Indians. From 8000 to 2000 BC, Woodland Indians lived on the island. A shell ring made from their discarded oyster shells and animal bones from that period can be found in the Sea Pines Nature Preserve. The recorded history of the island goes back to the early 1500s, when Spanish explorers sailing coastal waters came upon the island and found Native American settlements. Over the next 200 years, the island was claimed at various times by the Spanish, the French, and the British. In 1663, Captain William Hilton claimed the island for the British crown (and named it for himself), and the island became home to indigo, rice, and cotton plantations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “miraculous” (Newsweek) human drama, based on a true story, from the renowned author of The Prince of Tides and The Great Santini The island is nearly deserted, haunting, beautiful. Across a slip of ocean lies South Carolina. But for the handful of families on Yamacraw Island, America is a world away. For years the people here lived proudly from the sea, but now its waters are not safe. Waste from industry threatens their very existence unless, somehow, they can learn a new way. But they will learn nothing without someone to teach them, and their school has no teacher—until one man gives a year of his life to the island and its people. Praise for The Water Is Wide “Miraculous . . . an experience of joy.”—Newsweek “A powerfully moving book . . . You will laugh, you will weep, you will be proud and you will rail . . . and you will learn to love the man.”—Charleston News and Courier “A hell of a good story.”—The New York Times “Few novelists write as well, and none as beautifully.”—Lexington Herald-Leader “[Pat] Conroy cuts through his experiences with a sharp edge of irony. . . . He brings emotion, writing talent and anger to his story.”—Baltimore Sun
