Book The History of the Higher Criticism of the New Testament

Download or read book The History of the Higher Criticism of the New Testament written by Henry Sylvester Nash and published by . This book was released on 1900 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim is to make clear to non-professional readers the nature of the Higher Criticism and its divine right within the churches. To do this the history of Bible study must be followed far into the history of Christianity, even as far as the time when, by the cooperation of the Catholic Church with the moral forces of pagan antiquity, the foundations of modern life and culture were laid, and the Bible was taken to the heart of Europe. Criticism can defend itself before the people only by showing that the history of our religion has made it inevitable. And to do this with any measure of success, the historical causes and conditions of criticism must be treated at greater length than would be seemly if the book were designed for professional readers. The aim of the book is not to give a detailed account of the movements of opinion in the field of Introduction. The aim is rather a philosophy of the history of Criticism. - Preface.

Book The New Testament and Criticism

Download or read book The New Testament and Criticism written by George Eldon Ladd and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1967 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One unfortunate consequence of the bitter fundamentalist-modernist controversy which raged in the early twenties has been the strongly negative attitude toward Biblical criticism assumed by some of the successors to the fundamentalists of the 1920s. Such people, according to the author, insist that the critical method is basically hostile to the evangelical faith, and they have continued to oppose any use of it. Others, however, claiming the same heritage, believe that the orthodox interpretation of the Gospel can be defended positively and constructively only with the aid of a sound critical method and the results of critical scholarship. The author believes that an evangelical Biblical criticism is not only possible but necessary. The central thesis of his book is that "the Bible is the Word of God given in the words of men in history", and as such its historical origins must be reconstructed as far as possible. In this way a richer understanding of the Scriptures can be achieved.

Book The History of the Higher Criticism of the New Testament

Download or read book The History of the Higher Criticism of the New Testament written by Henry S. Nash and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Higher Criticism of the New Testament: Being the History of the Process Whereby the Word of God Has Won the Right to Be Understood Tms book may seem to be badly planned. Where space is so scanty, to spend four chapters in working up to the critical period that began in the eighteenth century looks out of proportion. Yet the purpose of the book justifies and even compels this procedure. The aim is to make clear to non-professional readers the nature of the Higher Criticism and its divine right within the churches. To do this the history of Bible-study must be followed far into the history of Christianity, even as far as the time when, by the cooperation of the Catholic Church with the moral forces of pagan antiquity, the foundations of modern life and culture were laid, and the Bible was taken to the heart of Europe. Criticism can defend itself before the people only by showing that the history of our religion has made it inevitable. And to do this with any measure of success, the historical causes and conditions of criticism must be treated at greater length than would be seemly if the book were designed for professional readers. The reader will remember that the aim of the book is not to give a detailed account of the movements of opinion in the field of Introduction. That matter is handled by another book in this series. The aim is rather a philosophy of the history of Criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, this volume was originally published, according to the authors, thanks to a ‘conscious call’. Book Evangelical Faith and the Challenge of Historical Criticism

Download or read book Evangelical Faith and the Challenge of Historical Criticism written by Christopher M. Hays and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many introductions to biblical studies describe critical approaches, but they do not discuss the theological implications. This timely resource discusses the relationship between historical criticism and Christian theology to encourage evangelical engagement with historical-critical scholarship. Charting a middle course between wholesale rejection and unreflective embrace, the book introduces evangelicals to a way of understanding and using historical-critical scholarship that doesn't compromise Christian orthodoxy. The book covers eight of the most hotly contested areas of debate in biblical studies, helping readers work out how to square historical criticism with their beliefs.

Book The Journal of Higher Criticism Volume 13 Number 4

Download or read book The Journal of Higher Criticism Volume 13 Number 4 written by Robert M. Price and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Journal of Higher Criticism is a forthright attempt to hark back to the bold historical hypotheses and critical interpretations associated with the great names of F. C. Baur and Tübingen - though, of course, not necessarily the same constructions. We welcome articles dealing with historical, literary, and history-of-religion issues from the perspective of higher criticism, as well as studies in the history of biblical criticism and the work of major figures in that tradition - leaving to others such worthy subdisciplines as textual criticism, modern literary hermeneutics, and biblical theology. Our primaryfocus is on the New Testament and Early Christianity, but studies dealing with the Hebrew Scriptures, Judaism, and the Koran will also receive careful consideration.

Book Politicizing the Bible

Download or read book Politicizing the Bible written by Scott Hahn and published by Herder & Herder. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resisting the typical, dry methods of contemporary scholarship, this powerful examination revisits the biblical days of life-and-death conflict, struggles for power between popes and kings, and secret alliances of intellectuals united by a desire to pit worldly goals against the spiritual priorities of the church. This account looks beyond the pretense of neutrality and objectivity often found in secular study, and brings to light the appropriation of scripture by politically motivated interpreters. Questioning the techniques taken for granted at divinity schools worldwide, their origins are traced to the writings of Machiavelli and Marsilio of Padua, the political projects of Henry VIII, Thomas Hobbes, and John Locke, and the quest for an empire of science on the part of Descartes and Spinoza. Intellectual and inspiring, an argument is made for bringing Christianity back to biblical literacy.
