Book Sequence Stratigraphy and Depositional Response to Eustatic Tectonic and Climatic Forcing

Download or read book Sequence Stratigraphy and Depositional Response to Eustatic Tectonic and Climatic Forcing written by B.U. Haq and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new paradigm of sequence stratigraphy attempts to discern the migration of facies resulting from changes in eustatic, tectonic and sedimentary regimes in order to anticipate the locus and type of sediment deposition. It is rapidly becoming an indispensable tool for the prediction of facies in exploration and production geology and for discerning internal stratal architecture through high-resolution studies of oil fields for enhanced hydrocarbon exploitation. The discipline is in a state of rapid expansion. New case studies of its application are vital to an appreciation of the full potential of the methodology. The variety of studies published here collectively exemplify the response of the depositional systems to various governing factors that create or destroy accommodation space, modify sediment flux, and/or alter coastal and offshore productivity in a number of depositional environments and temporal scales. The volume contains articles that emphasize sequence biostratigraphy, sequence ecostratigraphy, the peculiarities of reefal and non-reefal carbonate platforms, computer simulation of basin sediment fill, global rates of coal deposition in terms of eustatic changes and the behavior of mixed siliclastic-carbonate systems. The papers also cover documentation of sequences in intervals ranging from the Paleozoic to Miocene. One article identifies a previously ignored, but potentially significant, mechanism of eustatic change during non-glacial periods and the possible anthropogenic component of sea-level rise during the twentieth century. Finally, a more speculative article presents the case for an extraterrestrial connection as a source for third-order eustatic cycles. The case studies go a long way to further document the variations on the basic themes of sequence stratigraphy and enhance its value as a predictive tool in exploration and production geology.

Book Aeolian Sand and Sand Dunes

Download or read book Aeolian Sand and Sand Dunes written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is more than half a century since the publication of R. A. Bagnold’s classic book The physics of blown sand and desert dunes, and it is a tribute to the quality of Bagnold’s work that many of the fundamental principles which he developed - main valid today. His book continues to be essential reading for any serious s- dent of aeolian processes. However, the past two decades have seen an explosion in the scale of research dealing with aeolian transport processes, sediments, and landforms. Some of this work has been summarized in review papers and edited conference proceedings, but this book provides the rst attempt to review the whole eld of aeolian sand research. Inevitably, it has not been possible to cover all - pects in equal depth, and the balance of included material naturally re ects the - thors’ own interests to a signi cant degree. However, our aim has been to provide as broad a perspective as possible, and to provide an entry point to an extensive mul- disciplinary scienti c literature, some of which has not been given the attention it deserves in earlier textbooks and review papers. Many examples are drawn from existing published work, but the book also makes extensive use of our own research in the Middle East, Australia, Europe, and North America. The book has been written principally for use by advanced undergraduates, po- graduates, and more senior research workers in geomorphology and sedimentology.

Book The High resolution Stratigraphic Architecture and Evolution of the Burdigalian Carbonate siliciclastic Sedimentary Systems of the Mut Basin Turkey

Download or read book The High resolution Stratigraphic Architecture and Evolution of the Burdigalian Carbonate siliciclastic Sedimentary Systems of the Mut Basin Turkey written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The factors influencing the production and deposition of carbonate sediments are known. These are namely accommodation variations (eustasy and tectonics), siliciclastic sediment input, environmental changes (temperature, salinity, trophic level), nature of the producing ecologies, and the hydrodynamic regime. However, the manner in which these factors integrate through time to produce the diversity of stratigraphic architectures that we see is not well understood. This study addresses this question by describing the organisation of shallow marine carbonate-mixed platforms in three environmentally distinct contemporaneous settings across a basin. Chronostratigraphic correlations are made between the different sites, and this permits the comparison of coeval depositional facies and geometries, and the understanding of the factors that create the different stratigraphic architectures observed. The study interval is the Lower Miocene (Burdigalian) of the Mut Basin in Southern Turkey. This area is chosen because it presents extraordinary large-scale 3D outcrops showing depositional geometries, and such outcrops are found throughout the basin. The Mut Basin opened during the Oligocene and was partially filled by syn-extensional continental sediments. Post-extensional basin-wide thermal subsidence then occurred during the Lower Miocene, and at the same time rapid marine transgression flooded a complex relict topography, depositing shallow platform carbonates in a variety of settings, accompanied by some localised siliciclastic input. The Miocene stratigraphy of two areas was mapped out in the field. This allowed three Burdigalian margin transects to be chosen for detailed study (Dibekli, Pirinç and Alahan). Observations of the stratal geometries and the facies were combined into a high resolution sequence stratigraphic framework of retrograding/prograding sedimentary cycles in order to construct stratigraphic cross-sections of each transect. 3346m of section were logged, 4.

Book Sequence Stratigraphy of the Lower Miocene Moghra Formation in the Qattara Depression North Western Desert Egypt

Download or read book Sequence Stratigraphy of the Lower Miocene Moghra Formation in the Qattara Depression North Western Desert Egypt written by Safiya M. Hassan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Qattara Depression is part of the Northwestern Desert in Egypt and is home to the second lowest point in Africa at -133 meters below sea level. Therefore, before any projects can be carried out in this area, we must first understand the geology of the land. The present study deals with the high-resolution sequence stratigraphic analysis of the Lower Miocene Moghra Formation outcrops in the Qattara Depression Region. The literature on the sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy of the Moghra Formation has been sparse to date, despite some excellent work over the years by academic and petroleum workers. Moreover, the area studied is within what was once a front-line of World War II, where mine fields and war relics are scattered and cover wide reaches. This has resulted in limited geologic mapping in the past. Thus, great attention is paid in this study to establishing a robust sedimentology and high-resolution sequence stratigraphic framework for the Lower Miocene Moghra Formation. Included are works based on outcrops and, most importantly, new sedimentological and chronostratigraphic information not previously available.
