Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Documents of the Hexateuch, Vol. 2: Translated and Arranged in Chronological Order With Introduction and Notes The long delay in the issue of this second and concluding volume scarcely admits of any apology, though I may plead in partial excuse increase of work different in kind and a multitude of distractions. The delay has not been without compensation, for it has enabled me to take advantage of much excellent literature which has appeared on the Hexateuch in particular, and on the O. T. And Semitic literature in general, during the last five or six years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of critical scholarship biblical texts have been dated using linguistic evidence. Until now there has been no introduction to and comprehensive overview of the field. Book Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament Vol 2

Download or read book Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament Vol 2 written by horst Balz and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-20 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English translation of the three-volume Exegetisches Wrterbuch zum Neuen Testament, this monumental work by an ecumenical group of scholars is first of all a complete English dictionary of New Testament Greek. Going beyond that, however EDNT also serves as a guide to the usage of every New Testament word in its various contexts, and it makes a significant contribution to New Testament exegesis and theology. EDNT's thorough, lengthy discussions of more significant words and its grouping of words related by root and meaning (with alphabetical cross-references) distinguish it from simpler Greek-English lexicons. Advancing the discussion of the Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament, EDNT summarizes more recent treatments of numerous questions in New Testament study and takes into consideration newer viewpoints of linguistics.

Book A History of the Quests for the Historical Jesus Volume 2

Download or read book A History of the Quests for the Historical Jesus Volume 2 written by Colin Brown and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, two-volume reassessment of the quests for the historical Jesus that details their origins and underlying presuppositions as well as their ongoing influence on today's biblical and theological scholarship. Jesus' life and teaching is important to every question we ask about what we believe and why we believe it. And yet there has never been common agreement about his identity, intentions, or teachings—even among first-century historians and scholars. Throughout history, different religious and philosophical traditions have attempted to claim Jesus and paint him in the cultural narratives of their heritage, creating a labyrinth of conflicting ideas. From the evolution of orthodoxy and quests before Albert Schweitzer's famous "Old Quest," to today's ongoing questions about criteria, methods, and sources, A History of the Quests for the Historical Jesus not only chronicles the developments but lays the groundwork for the way forward. The late Colin Brown brings his scholarly prowess in both theology and biblical studies to bear on the subject, assessing not only the historical and exegetical nuts and bolts of the debate about Jesus of Nazareth but also its philosophical, sociological, and theological underpinnings. Instead of seeking a bedrock of "facts," Brown stresses the role of hermeneutics in formulating questions and seeking answers. Colin Brown was almost finished with the manuscript at the time of his passing in 2019. Brought to its final form by Craig A. Evans, this book promises to become the definitive history and assessment of the quests for the historical Jesus. Volume One (sold separately) covers the period from the beginnings of Christianity to the end of World War II. Volume Two covers the period from the post-War era through contemporary debates.

Book The Characterization of an Empire

Download or read book The Characterization of an Empire written by Mary Katherine Yem Hing Hom and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assyria—the missing link in the superpower oppressor type in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament—still suffers from modern scholarly neglect. The Characterization of an Empire aims to alleviate this neglect while also elucidating the historical biblical books that convey characterizations of Assyrians. The narratological insights gained throughout this study contribute to biblical literary studies at rigorous, detailed, sometimes deep, and sometimes complex levels. Thus, this book offers to be not only a contribution to the general corpus of biblical literary studies, but also an expansion of our paradigms regarding the detail, depth, and complexity at which narratological intention and artistry function in the biblical text.

Download or read book Enoch and the Mosaic Torah written by Jason von Ehrenkrook and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early Enoch literature does not refer to the Mosaic Torah or emphasize the distinctively Mosaic laws designed for Israel. But the book of Jubilees gives room to both Mosaic and Enochic traditions within the Sinaitic revelatory framework. What, then, should we make of such differences? / This question and related speculations were on the minds of scholars gathered from around the world at the fourth Enoch Seminar at Camaldoli, Italy, in July 2007. Four tendencies emerged from the discussion at the seminar. Some scholars claimed that Jubilees was a direct product of Enochic Judaism with subordinated Mosaic features. Some suggested that Jubilees was a conscious synthesis of Enochic and Mosaic tradition, yet remaining autonomous from both. Some asserted that Jubilees was essentially a Mosaic text with some Enochic influence. And others questioned the very existence of a gulf between Enochic and Mosaic traditions as competing forms of Judaism at the time of Jubilees. / Gabriele Boccaccini and Giovanni Ibba have carefully collected the countervailing views into this volume. What readers will find here is a lively debate among the most distinguished international specialists, together striving for a better understanding of a puzzling ancient document.
