Book The Heroic Age Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Heroic Age Classic Reprint written by H. Munro Chadwick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heroic Age The type of poetry commonly known as heroic is one which makes its appearance in various nations and in various periods of history. No one can fail to observe that certain similar features are to be found in poems of this type which are widely separated from one another both in date and place of origin. In view of this fact it has seemed worth while to attempt a comparative study of two groups of such poems with the object of determining the nature of the resemblances between them and the causes to which they are due. Occasional illustrations have been taken from other groups of poems belonging to the same type. The first part of the book deals with the early heroic poetry and traditions of the Teutonic peoples, more especially with those stories which were the common property of various Teutonic peoples. It is pointed out that these stories all relate to a period with definite limits - a period for which a considerable amount of information is available from external sources. The subjects discussed include the distribution of the stories and the relationship between the various versions of them, the antiquity of the earliest poems and the conditions under which they were produced. Lastly, an attempt has been made to estimate the significance of the various elements, historical, mythical and fictitious, of which the stories are composed. The second part deals with Greek heroic poetry and traditions. These relate to a period for which little or no external evidence is available; and consequently they present many problems, the bearings of which can hardly be estimated without reference to the existence of similar phenomena elsewhere. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Circuit Rider: A Tale of the Heroic Age Obligations of a novelist to tell the truth. Lawyers and even ministers are permitted to speak entirely on one side. But no man is worthy to be called a novelist who does not endeavor with his whole soul to produce the higher form of history, by writing truly of men as they are, and dispassionately of those forms of life that come within his scope. Much as I have laughed at every sort of grotesquerie, I could not treat the early religious life of the West otherwise than with the most cordial sympathy and admiration. And yet this is not a religious novel, one in which all the bad people are as bad as they can be, and all the good people a little better than they can be. I have not even asked myself what may be the moral. The story of any true life is wholesome, if only the writer will tell it simply, keeping impertinent preachment of his own out of the way. Doubtless I Shall hopelessly damage myself with some good people by confessing in the start that, from the first chapter to the last, this is a love-story. But it is not my fault. It is God who made love so universal that no picture of human life can be complete where love is left out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Against the Stream, the Story of an Heroic Age in England, Vol. 3 Throughout the winter of 1801, and the spring of 1802, the enthusiasm with which the people had welcomed the peace with France had been slowly cooling. By March, 1802, when the "Definitive Treaty" of Amiens was announced, all idea of the peace being definitive had begun to fade away. The most immovable of Tories in those dreary days had the best of it in prognostication. Those whose hopes of human progress had been largest and most enduring, had to confess themselves most deluded. It makes no pretense to organic unity, nor is it intended in the small space occupied to be complete in details. It is intended to be accurate as far as it goes. The story Of Kentucky in her pioneer times is to a large extent the story of the American western frontier in the closing days of the Eighteenth and the Opening days of the Nineteenth centuries; hence the study of Louisville's early people and Of the conditions surrounding them is of more than merely local interest. Book John Marshall and the Heroic Age of the Supreme Court

Download or read book John Marshall and the Heroic Age of the Supreme Court written by R. Kent Newmyer and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Marshall (1755--1835) was arguably the most important judicial figure in American history. As the fourth chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, serving from 1801 to1835, he helped move the Court from the fringes of power to the epicenter of constitutional government. His great opinions in cases like Marbury v. Madison and McCulloch v. Maryland are still part of the working discourse of constitutional law in America. Drawing on a new and definitive edition of Marshall's papers, R. Kent Newmyer combines engaging narrative with new historiographical insights in a fresh interpretation of John Marshall's life in the law. More than the summation of Marshall's legal and institutional accomplishments, Newmyer's impressive study captures the nuanced texture of the justice's reasoning, the complexity of his mature jurisprudence, and the affinities and tensions between his system of law and the transformative age in which he lived. It substantiates Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.'s view of Marshall as the most representative figure in American law.
