When they had reached the cottages to which their journey was directed, old Dermo'd was immediately recognized, and with his unknown companion, warmly welcomed by the cottagers. Their looks were fixed upon the Hermit; and when informed of his settlement in Glenconella, and of the object of his present visit, they resolved to avail themselves of the offer, and expressed their cordial gratitude. Several hours were passed in conversation, and the Hermit already obtained the reputation amongst them of a kind, familiar, good-natured man. The two visitors were hospitably entertained, and after mutual gratulations departed, in the afternoon, for their return. They had not gone far when the Hermit observed to Dermo'd that he saw a man at a considerable distance crossing the hill, and a small boy with him, who appeared to carry something over his shoulders. "Oh, yes, (rejoined Dermo'd) this is Father Anthony, and his little clerk with him, carrying the vestments. He is coming to stop with us tonight, to say Mass in the morning: God knows I am glad he is coming, that you may have some person worth while to speak to." The Hermit expressed equal satisfaction at the approach of the Friar, but assured his considerate old friend that no conversation could be more agreeable to him than that which he enjoyed since he came to the village.
