Book excerpt: After years as a poster boy for space station children, Bill Smiths orderly life is turned inside out by events that defy rational reason. His natural pension for physical interaction with fellow crew members and his innate technical abilities are strained to the breaking point in his need to protect his sanity, if not his actual life. To overcome what appear to be impossible odds and a clear organized conspiracy at the highest levels of government, Bill and his nemesis, Juanita Alvarez, become entangled in a roller-coaster ride of stress and emotional involvement, bordering on a criminal conspiracy of their own. What appears to be wrong becomes right, what appears to be bad becomes good, and what appears to be legal becomes truly illegal. In this epic battle of right and wrong, our characters moral and physical strengths are tested to the breaking point. In the end, the never-ending struggle of all living things to exist and prosper is confirmed without regard for mankinds concept of right or wrong. Open the front cover, immerse yourself in the unfolding story, and pray for a revelation. I think you will find it very hard to put down.

Book The History of the 51st Highland Division 1914 1918

Download or read book The History of the 51st Highland Division 1914 1918 written by Frederick William Bewsher and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1921 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If it were possible for the General who for three years commanded all the British Divisions in France, and was served with equal gallantry, devotion, and success by each, to admit a predilection for any of them, my affection would naturally turn to the Division that drew so many of its recruits from the same part of Scotland where my boyhood was spent and my own people lived. Those who read the pages of this book will find therein a tale of patient endeavour and glorious achievement of which I claim a good right to be as proud as any of my fellow-countrymen. The 51st Division does not need to boast of its prowess or its record. It can point to the story of its deeds, plainly and simply told, and leave the world to judge.

Book A familiar compound ghost

Download or read book A familiar compound ghost written by Sarah Annes Brown and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Familiar Compound Ghost explores the relationship between allusion and the uncanny in literature. An unexpected echo or quotation in a new text can be compared to the sudden appearance of a ghost or mysterious double, the reanimation of a corpse, or the discovery of an ancient ruin hidden in a modern city. In this scholarly and suggestive study, Brown identifies moments where this affinity between allusion and the uncanny is used by writers to generate a particular textual charge, where uncanny elements are used to flag patterns of allusion and to point to the haunting presence of an earlier work. A Familiar Compound Ghost traces the subtle patterns of connection between texts centuries, even millennia apart, from Greek tragedy and Latin epic, through the plays of Shakespeare and the Victorian novel, to contemporary film, fiction and poetry. Each chapter takes a different uncanny motif as its focus: doubles, ruins, reanimation, ghosts and journeys to the underworld.

Whether we adore, ignore, or deplore them, they all influence our culture, and color the way America is perceived by the world. This A-to-Z collection of essays explores more than one hundred people, places, and phenomena that have taken on iconic status in American culture. The scholars and writers whose thoughts are gathered in this unique three-volume set examine these icons through a diverse array of perspectives and fields of expertise. Ranging from the Alamo to Muhammad Ali, from John Wayne to the zipper, this selection of American icons represents essential elements of our culture, including law, art, food, religion, and science. Featuring more than 100 illustrations, this work will serve as a unique resource for students of American history and culture. The interdisciplinary scholars in this work examine what it means when something is labeled as an icon. What common features do the people, places, and things we deem to be iconic share? To begin with, an icon generates strong responses in people, it often stands for a group of values (John Wayne), it reflects forces of its time, it can be reshaped or extended by imitation, and it often breaks down barriers between various segments of American culture, such as those that exist between white and black America, or between high and low art. The essays contained in this set examine all these aspects of American icons from a variety of perspectives and through a lively range of rhetoric styles.

Book excerpt: “A chronicle of one summer in a boy’s coming of age”—the international bestselling classic that became the basis for the Oscar-winning film (Medium). Captivating and evocative, Herman Raucher’s semi-autobiographical tale has been made into a record-breaking Academy Award-winning hit movie, adapted for the stage, and enchanted readers for generations. In the summer of 1942, Hermie is fifteen. He is wildly obsessed with sex, and passionately in love with an “older woman” of twenty-two, whose husband is overseas and at war. Ambling through Nantucket Island with his friends, Hermie’s indelible narration chronicles his frantic efforts to become a man, especially one worthy of the lovely Dorothy, as well as his glorious and heartbreaking initiation into sex. “Mr. Raucher scores most tellingly. His recall of nervous teen-age gaucheries is dead accurate, hilarious, tinged with sadness.”—The New York Times Book Review “A charming and tender novel . . . The overall effect is one of high hilarity. Raucher is a comic-artist who is able to convey the fears and joys . . . of the boy and at the same time give older readers a wrench in the heart. ”—Publishers Weekly

The book describes the origin of the battery and opens with the nominal roll of the original battery, six officers and 128 men, with a group photo. To this roll are added, separately, the names of 14 officers who joined later. At the end is the nominal roll at the start of demobilization, six officers and 130 men, again with a group photo. The battery left for France on 8 October 1916, joining the 54th Heavy Artillery Group in the Arras sector, where it was in action in the offensive of April 1917 and in May. In June 1917 it moved to Ypres and took part in the Third Ypres fighting. In November the battery was in action at Cambrai and in March 1918 it was involved in the retreat and then in the counter-offensive leading to the final advance. An ammunition report gives the total expenditure in the two years the battery was on the Western Front as 108,271 rounds, a weight of 4,833 tons. There is a list of honours and awards and of promotions and postings out of the battery. The roll of honour gives date of death and place of burial (there were no officers among the dead), and there is a separate roll of the wounded, again with date. Most useful is the diary of events detailing the battery's moves, locations, and periods in action.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Druzes

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Druzes written by Samy Swayd and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-03-10 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most intriguing minority groups in the Middle East is now a thousand years old. It emerged in the city of Cairo, spread to what is today Lebanon, Syria, and Israel, and subsequently became known by outsiders as Druze (in Arabic, Durooz, meaning Druzes). Druzes have played a major role in the history of the Middle East and often been misunderstood by neighbors and outsiders because of their esoteric religious doctrine, the secretive nature that such a doctrine has instilled in them, and the variety of perspectives or divisions prevalent among members of the community. This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the Druzes covers their history through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 1000 cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Druzes.

Book The A to Z of the Druzes

Download or read book The A to Z of the Druzes written by Samy Swayd and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-07-27 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Druzes are one of the smallest, least studied, and most esoteric religious communities in the Middle East. This is because the Druze teachings remain inaccessible not only to outsiders but also to uninitiated members within the Druze community itself. Furthermore, proselytizing_inducing someone to convert to one's own religious faith_has been prohibited since the establishment of the sect in the 11th century. In order to resist assimilation by the various empires and colonial powers that sought to dominate them_the Byzantines, various Arab dynasties, the Mamluks and Ottomans, the British and French, in addition to the nations that govern them_the Druzes disguise and conceal their beliefs. Therefore, not much is known by outsiders about the Druzes. This dictionary provides nearly 1,000 concise and informative cross-referenced A to Z entries on religious, political, and cultural themes, as well as entries on a number of major families and individuals (artists, writers, diplomats, and leaders) who have contributed to the Druze communities. This volume is also complemented with a chronology, an introductory essay, and a bibliography.
